New Music Friday: February 12

Happy Lunar New Year (Year of the Ox) to those celebrating this weekend! If not, happy Friday nonetheless. We have brand new tracks coming from pop stars Taylor Swift, P!nk featuring her daughter Willow Sage, Dua Lipa, country pop icon Carrie Underwood & actress/musician herself, Victoria Justice. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday for Friday, February 12, 2021…

“Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” by Taylor Swift

Pop superstar Taylor Swift announced on ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday that her next single, “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” will be out today. On her socials, she also hinted when her re-recorded album, Fearless (Taylor’s Version) will be out. And for those who haven’t figured it out, it’s going to drop April 9th!! As in 4/9 or 4+9 = 13 ๐Ÿ˜‰

She explained in a letter to her fans that she will also include six unreleased tracks from the vault, bringing the album’s track list to a whopping 26 songs, a.ka. a multiple of her lucky number 13!! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m not sure if it was fate but it’s also been 13 years since the original “Love Story” was released. I’m pleased to report that this new version is exceptionally made. I can’t really detect any major changes, but I do think this new version is crisper than the older one. I dig this new version.

In the above lyric video, you can see some throwback memories of Swift and some of her adoring fans as well as Taylor on stage in various Fearless era outfits. So sweet!

I commend her once again for undertaking a huge project in re-recording her original six albums in her efforts to own the rights to her music. She’s 1/6 complete!

I don’t know about you but I’m excited to go aboard the nostalgia train and re-listen to her classic songs like “Fifteen”, “White Horse,” & “You Belong With Me,” now produced and recorded her way! Share your thoughts in the comments below. Will you be buying the new album?

“Cover Me In Sunshine” by P!nk feat. Willow Sage Hart

2020 and now 2021 has been challenging for everyone! Multi Platinum winning pop singer-songwriter P!nk sought music as a way to cope with the pandemic. She recorded a new song with her daughter, Willow Sage in their home and it’s called “Cover Me In Sunshine.” This song follows her 2020 collaboration with Keith Urban in “One Too Many.” It’s also her first new song since her eighth studio album, Hurts 2B Human was released in 2019.

She said in a video message, “it made us feel happy, so we’re going to put it out for no other reason.” She hopes the song makes you happy too! And it certainly did for me! ๐ŸŒž ๐ŸŒž

In the music video, we see the two of them tending to their farm, riding horses, goofing around, and laughing and enjoying each other’s time. They just puts a big smile on my face.

Overall, I thought this new single was very wholesome through and through and will provide a glimmer of joy for those feeling stressed, confused, angsty, or scared in this crazy world we’re living in right now. It has the power to turn that frown upside down! Boost your mood with some positivity by hearing this song and adding it to your playlists this week. You won’t regret it!

I have a good feeling Willow will be following in her mom’s footsteps one day. Thoughts? Meantime, here’s hoping you enjoy this latest track. Can’t wait for more new P!nk songs in 2021!

“We’re Good” by Dua Lipa

25-year-old pop songstress, Dua Lipa is back with some new songs including “We’re Good” in what’s billed as her reissued Future Nostalgia album. It’s called Future Nostalgia: The Moonlight Edition and it’s available now to stream.

According to the singer, she says this new single is about an amicable breakup. “I think a lot of people wish and hope for those especially because it can be such a difficult process to go through that at some point you just hope it’s a very easy break and you can both just move on with your life. So in a perfect world, this is ‘We’re Good’.”

So if you’re on the brink of a breakup and want to end things on good terms, then this song is for you. You can also play it for your soon to be ex so that potentially things won’t get awkward between the two of you.

Sonically speaking, I feel this is going to be another mainstream hit. It has a cool arrangement to it. I love in the chorus section where she splits the lines up into several chunks: Not gonna judge / you when you’re with / somebody else / as long as you swear / you won’t be pissed when I do it myself. It has an nifty flow to it in my opinion.

While it may be a B-side song, I feel like it could’ve fit well on the main original album. What do you guys think?

Watch the official music video seen above for a Titanic-esque tragedy, Lipa owning the cruise ship stage while wearing elegant dress attire, lobster trauma, lobster heartbreak and eventual lobster freedom. Don’t worry she also makes it out alive!

Additional collaborations on the latest iteration include her song, “Prisoner” with Miley Cyrus, “Un Dia” with J Balvin, Bad Bunny & Tainy, and “Not My Problem” with JID.

“Softly And Tenderly” by Carrie Underwood

Country hitmaker Carrie Underwood is planning on releasing her first gospel covers album on March 26th. It’s called My Savior and one of those songs that I would love to highlight is “Softly And Tenderly.” That single, out now was originally composed by Will L. Thompson in 1880. It has gone on to be covered by other famous artists like Pat Boone, Amy Grant, and Reba McEntire with Trisha Yearwood and Kelly Clarkson just to name a few.

With Underwood’s version, we hear a powerful yet delicate vocal performance. The attached audio video would make for a calm listening session, perhaps for meditation too. I felt at ease listening to her sing the verses. Feel free to play this if you need some spiritual healing. It also works for destressing and for those listening before bedtime sessions!

Fun Fact: She sung this during the 51st Annual CMA Awards back in November 2017 for the In Memorium segment. Check that out here to relive that moment.

The 37-year-old artist expressed on her socials that the songs on My Savior “set the foundation for me and I hope you love them as much as I do.” She wanted to sing these classic hymns because they’ve been a part of her life for as long as she could remember.

Per her website, My Savior has been dubbed as a “spiritual companion” to her Christmas album, My Gift which was released last fall. You can expect her versions of songs like “Amazing Grace,” “Blessed Assurance,” “I Surrender All,” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” which features Grammy winning gospel singer, CeCe Winans.

“Stay” by Victoria Justice

27-year-old artist, Victoria Justice follows her 2020 single, “Treat Myself” a.ka. her triumphant return to the music scene with “Stay,” out now!

This ballad is about convincing your lover to stay the night, to keep you company and get to know you more. Perfect for Valentine’s Day, date night, snowed-in days, movie nights, what have you, etc.

Aurally, I love her angelic vocal performance. It matches well with this soft and light arrangement. What do you guys think?

I hope she releases a music video for this new song. I also hope it receives radio airplay. I expect this to be a hit amongst her adoring fans regardless.
