Happy Halloween weekend everyone! No tricks up my sleeves, only treats! 😉 I’ve got FIVE brand new song picks for you to check out and they’re from pop star Dua Lipa & Belgian singer Angèle, pop band Jonas Brothers, EDM duo The Knocks featuring alternative band Foster The People, rock band Against The Current & French DJ Petit Biscuit. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post for October 30, 2020…
“Fever” by Dua Lipa & Angèle
Pop singer-songwriter Dua Lipa follows the release of her Club Future Nostalgia remix album with a brand new single/collaboration in “Fever.” She teamed up with Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle for a sweltering collaboration.
The song deals with someone madly in love. You’ve fallen head over heels for this person and you can compare it to having a literal fever. It’s that special feeling you get when you lay eyes with somebody attractive. Heartbeats increase. Warm fuzzy feelings. Love galore! XOXOX.
Lipa and Angèle take turns with their amazing vocals expressing the hot sentiments. In the chorus after Lipa sings, “I’vе got a fever, so can you check?/Hand on my forehead, kiss my neck/And when you touch me, baby, I turn red/I’ve got a fever, so can you check?, Angèle expresses fluently, “Car dans mes yeux, ça se voit/La fièvre dans les yeux, oui, ça se voit/Mon cÅ“ur se serre, j’ai du feu dans la voix/Le plus souvent, c’est quand je pense à toi” which translates to “Maybe with time it will go away/And yet, and yet, and yet, I can’t see myself/Like a medicine, I am nothing without you/And I know that, I know that I’m wasting time in your arms.”
Hearing the French verses really adds to the potency of the song’s lyrics. I commend them for including them. It wouldn’t have that oomph to it if it was all in English.
Feel free to add this amazing new track if you’re a big fan of love songs, Dua Lipa, and Angèle. It will be appropriate for those fans/listeners out there who have found the love of their life, for Valentine’s Day, for date nights/ or for those feel-good playlists.
“I Need You Christmas” by Jonas Brothers
The Jonas Brothers are ushering in the Christmas/holiday season early this year with their latest tune, “I Need You Christmas.” This piano ballad is an easy listening track filled with warm happy vibes. 2020 has been challenging and tough for everybody. So hearing a Christmas song at this point of the year is comforting. It doesn’t really matter that they released it the day before Halloween because as soon as we hit November 1st, most families will already be in the Christmas spirit.
I can guarantee you this will be a hit with their fans. Accompanying the video seen above, is a photo from when they were kids in matching pajamas on Christmas morning. Isn’t that sweet?!?
Anyways, the lyrics are about priceless childhood memories of Christmas like waiting for Santa, caroling, and opening presents. Now that they’re older and married, they got a different appreciation for the holidays.
They tweeted, “For us this song stirs up memories of childhood snowball fights & finding the nearest hill to sled. It brings us back to spending time with family setting up the Christmas tree. Hopefully it can bring you guys the same feelings of warmth & happiness that creating it brought us.”
Christmas is a special time for making memories with our families so hopefully a tender and soft song like this will spark some holiday joy this season despite the pandemic.
If there is a Christmas in Rockefeller Center special this year via Zoom performances, I predict they will sing this song. Otherwise expect them to promote this single on other holiday concert events on TV/radio later this year. 🎅
“All About You” by The Knocks feat. Foster The People
EDM duo The Knocks have teamed up with Foster The People again following their previous collaborative effort, “Ride Or Die” in 2018.
The band revealed on their Twitter page recently that this song is all “about being lost and finding light in love.”
From my interpretation, it’s about someone who got dumped and now all they can do now is wonder what went wrong, you’re left crushed as to why things couldn’t have continued until eventually you start to see things from your ex’s perspective. Then and only then will you finally understand why the relationship ended the way it did and it’s finally in everyone’s best interest to just move on.
Sonically, it has some cool synths and feel good tambourine playing mixed with some cool beats over layed with FTP’s Mark Foster’s soothing vocals. If you liked their previous collab, “Ride Or Die” or are a big fan of each artist or both, then I believe you will enjoy this single too.
It remains to be seen if this will be part of The Knocks’ next album, but feel free to share your predictions below in the comments box.
“that won’t save us” by Against The Current
Rock group, Against The Current is back with a cathartic new song called “that won’t save us.” It’s their first official release for 2020 which follows their 2019 remixes and stripped live singles for “Almost Forgot,” and “Voices,” respectively.
A lot of pent up anger and frustration gets conveyed in the “that won’t save us” lyrics which delves into a broken relationship. Deep hard hitting questions like, “What did I hear you say?, what’s got you so afraid?, how did we become so numb?, and are you proud of what we’ve come to be?” are posed.
According to an interview from Alternative Press Magazine, lead singer Chrissy Costanza said, “The song points the finger right in your face and says, ‘What you’re doing right now isn’t going to save us. What do you want to do about it? Do you want to keep doing what you’re doing and know this is going to die? Or, are you ready to make a change?'”
So if you’re feeling confused and or conflicted about your current relationship with someone and you can tell things are falling apart, then this song is for you. If you’re looking for a new solid rock song to jam to, then add this one to your playlists.
Costanza’s vocals are A+ and I can’t wait to hear what their next (third) full album will sound like. If you haven’t discover their body of work, I highly recommend you to, especially if you’re a fan of other rock artists like Paramore and Avril Lavigne. “Burnin” by Petit Biscuit
20-year-old DJ Petit Biscuit a.k.a. Mehdi Benjelloun just dropped his second studio album, Parachute which includes the latest single, “Burnin.”
According to his description for the song/music video, “Burnin” is a very sensual song…it’s about ambiguity between two friends with benefits… one fell in love and the other one is playing with that ambiguity. Something that happens when you’re very young and innocent and don’t know better.”
Sonically and lyrically, it’s a departure from his 2017 hit “Sunset Lover.” While that track was more layered around one line of lyric, this one contains deeper lyrics about love on top of a consistent but still multi-layered track. What remains the same in both instances, is the upbeat dance pop feeling you get after hearing it.
