Today is the day!!! Pop/R&B superstar, Lizzo is back with the release of Special, her fourth studio album! One of those tracks I wanted to spotlight this week is “Coldplay.”
I was surprised she was a big fan of the British supergroup fronted by Chris Martin, and now the Grammy-winning band can finally say they got songwriter’s credits on one of her tracks!
Let’s dive in. Here below are my first reactions…

“Coldplay” by Lizzo
0:06 βΌοΈ- Ahhh! 3x Grammy-winner, Lizzo samples Coldplay’s iconic track, “Yellow” from their debut album, Parachutes (2000) but with a different pitch. The lyrics in play here are:
Look at the stars, look how they shine for you
And everything you do
0:26 π- 1st verse talks about the appreciation of finding your lover. You’re not quite married yet but you know you’ve found your match as you picture your future shared home.
0:38 πΊοΈ- The pre-chorus section explains how the relationship almost never came to fruition. Thankfully that path did not take shape!
0:49 π€- The love is undoubtedly whole! Love the vibes on the background track as Lizzo croons here.
1:02 π§βπ€βπ§- The lyrics are so sweet in this second verse. Going to sleep together with the person you genuinely love and waking up at sunrise holding hands. Nature and beauty coexist with one another!
1:08 π£οΈ- “Singin’ Coldplay in the night!”
2:15 π- Feel free to dedicate this track to your lover and enjoy every moment life has to offer your way including the private intimate ones!
2:48 π»- Love how it ends with the strings! Overall, a solid Lizzo record! I strongly believe both Lizzo and Coldplay’s fanbases will enjoy this single!
Further Listening/Viewing/Reading:
Check out Lizzo’s interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, here, where she discusses this track and more! I found it interesting that everything about this song according to her was “literal.” Everything she talks about in the song actually happened in her past!
Also, be sure to check out the “About Damn Time” singer performing on the TODAY show!
