New Music Friday: February 19

Happy Friday, February 19, 2021! This week we have brand new tunes from indie pop band AJR, pop artist Conan Gray, electronic artist Alan Walker and rising singer-songwriter Salem Ilese, English artists Ella Henderson and Tom Grennan & last but not least Brit DJ Paul Woolford with American singer-songwriter, Amber Mark. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday!

“Way Less Sad” by AJR

Lyrics: https://genius.com/Ajr-way-less-sad-lyrics

Indie pop band AJR released their first single for 2021 to much fanfare on Wednesday. “Way Less Sad” is the fourth single to drop from their upcoming fourth studio album, OK Orchestra (releasing March 26th.) They’ve enlisted their friend Edoardo Ranaboldo again (see “Bummerland”) to direct the music video. The video features a lot of cool camera tricks and nifty VFX (thanks to Caleb Natale). Shoutout to TWA Hotel for letting them film there. Major props to their team for also shooting scenes on location like on a carousel in Central Park, by the beach and on the various sets like the escalator and bedroom scenes.

Lyrically speaking, the brothers said that this is a song about lowering your standards. You don’t have to be so hard on yourself in life. From my interpretation, the song’s verses speaks to those who were once sad and depressed for a long period of time but now can see some joy in their surroundings and in their overall mental state by taking a more relaxed approach to things in life. Even though you won’t feel happy 100% of the time, you’re at least “way less sad.” You wrestle with that idea of pure bliss and pure sadness. So its like a middle ground where sometimes you’re beaming, but sometimes you’re a bit bummed. Hopefully this feel-good song will make you feel way less sad for real! Don’t be too hard on yourselves!

I’m guessing the band didn’t want to make an artwork for this single because the OK Orchestra artwork illustrates this song well with the two mood ranges (Ryan looking optimistic and Adam looking pessimistic) plus Jack in the middle ground neutral area.

Some references in this song/video that I noticed:
-Jack wearing the iconic “The Band Name Here” shirt which is a nod to the Neotheater song “Don’t Throw Out My Legos.”

-The alarm clock is set to 3:30 which is a nod to their song from The Click, “Three-Thirty.” They sure love the number 3! I don’t think they’ll reveal the reason why though.

-The lyrics “half past three” also refers to “Three-Thirty” and may also be a reference to their upcoming unreleased song, “3 O’Clock Things.”

-In the beach scene when they all stared and sang face forward to the camera, that felt like the Bang! music video. They’re also wearing the same outfits seen on the album art!

-In the outro, we have once again a cool instrumental transition going on much like “Bummerland” has. This could be a recurring thing with the other unreleased tracks on OK Orchestra too. Thoughts?

Sonically speaking, I love the up tempo catchy vibes, the production values keep impressing me with each new song they produce. At first I was questioning their decision with the AutoTune part in the bridge but it has now grown on me the more I listen to it. I can’t wait for OKO to drop next month!

According to their recent live stream session, this song was 9 years in the making! They sampled Simon & Garfunkel’s 1975 song, “My Little Town.” The horn sections that you hear in this song were originally going to be sold away to Kygo and Cardi B in different iterations but they were turned down by their respective teams. Thankfully, AJR kept it for themselves after all these years and have used it for “WLS.”

Overall, I thought it was a solid song that incorporated that AJR aesthetic/magic that we’ve all come to love through the years. I give props to Jack for braving the upside down stunt where he pours wine out and drops apples among other objects in the video. I predict this song will be their next radio hit in a slow rise up the charts that “Bang!” achieved over this past year.

For more BTS scenes, please check out director Ranaboldo’s IG post, here. I hope Ryan will post a “How We Made” video for this song later down the line. I always enjoy those vids!

“Overdrive” by Conan Gray

https://genius.com/Conan-gray-overdrive-lyrics

22-year-old singer-songwriter Conan Gray returns to the music scene with a brand new single called “Overdrive.” It follows his 2020 collaboration with fellow pop artist, Lauv in “Fake.” This new song is about falling in love with somebody really quick and all you want to do next is expedite the relationship. It’s risky, yeah, and you may get rejected down the line, but who cares as Gray uses driving/vehicular analogies to describe how he wants to take things in overdrive. He doesn’t want to see the red light, and he wants to burn down the street without turning left or right repeatedly meaning he wants that whirlwind of love and amazing epic fun times consistently.

This song is for those listeners out there who can relate to finding their match out of the whim and can confidently say that they know where it will lead them — a committed long-term relationship! I feel as he matures more as an artist, more fans will come flocking to his fanbase. His popularity is only going to go higher. If you’re already a hardcore fan of his, you’ll definitely enjoy this latest track. It’s expected that this song will appear on his upcoming second album. It’ll be interesting to see how his sound evolves in future singles.

The lyric video seen above was nicely made. I love the overall aesthetic and the graphics showing a race as the laps click by. Doesn’t this song make you want to take a cruise down the road/highway with the windows wide open with no stress and no worries?!? Perhaps in a post-pandemic world, many will feel inspire to do so. Of course, do drive safely and responsibly.

“Fake A Smile” by Alan Walker x salem ilese

https://genius.com/Alan-walker-and-salem-ilese-fake-a-smile-lyrics

EDM hitmaker, Alan Walker teamed up with TikTok star/singer-songwriter, Salem Ilese in “Fake A Smile.” If you’re feeling down and have to make an effort to smile or fake smile in and out of your household then this song is for you. Hopefully, it actually makes you smile upon listening to it. I also hope you felt seen by the lyrics.

Walker added a short letter in the description of the above music video, saying:

“We’ve landed, Walkers. Welcome back to the World of Walker. I’m so excited to finally share my latest single with you all alongside the super talented @salem ilese. Our journey may have been paused at moments last year, but you’ve all shown that not even the worst can break this community. Thank you for being there for me and more importantly for each other. While we wait for the day to be together in person again, I hope this song resonates with you. You are not alone.”

Said music video is very cinematic, almost like an actual video game in my opinion. I appreciated the crisp production values and the added SFX. I’m not sure what their budget was for this video but I predict they had a bigger budget to create their unique vision for their fans to see. See the names of the talented people behind the scenes and on camera listed in the above video’s description.

I thought Ilese had lovely vocals on this track. I also thought the bridge was a cool enhancement to the emotional verses and encapsulated the overall upbeat essence. Thoughts?

“Let’s Go Home Together” by Ella Henderson & Tom Grennan

https://genius.com/Ella-henderson-and-tom-grennan-lets-go-home-together-lyrics

25-year-old English musicians, Ella Henderson and Tom Grennan brought a cool duet/collaboration to the table this week. Previously, there was a version of this song with fellow English artist, James Arthur (he also co-wrote it). Watch a throwback performance from 2017, here. Arthur approved of this new version by the way.

This song deals with two people whom are madly in love with each other, flaws and all! No matter how imperfect each of them are, there’s still something that attracts one another. The lyrics video’s design shows coasters and beer stains to emphasize a fun night out hanging with each other at a bar or restaurant.

Both Henderson and Grennan’s vocal performances complement each other and I applaud them for joining forces in this iteration of the song. I thought the guitar/piano melodies were aurally pleasing to the ears. The chorus is oh so catchy and will be stuck in your head the more you listen to it!

This track is slated to appear on her upcoming second studio album.

“Heat” by Paul Woolford & Amber Mark

https://genius.com/Paul-woolford-and-amber-mark-heat-lyrics

Capping off this week’s picks is yet another epic collaboration! 27-year-old singer-songwriter, Amber Mark provides the vocals on this hot dance track from British DJ/music producer, Paul Woolford.

From my interpretation, this song deals with one-sided love. If you really love somebody but the sentiments from the other person isn’t the same towards you, then this song is for you. It’s a shame that this person doesn’t see the amazing qualities about you, the ones where you can boldly flaunt out in public a.k.a. that H-E-A-T!

By the way, the post-chorus where Mark spells the word, “heat” out like that was very catchy. Kudos to Woolford for working with her amazing vocals and embellishing them with his signature fiery beats.

Add this to your playlists now and save it for later in the year because it’s going to be perfect for parties, dances and clubs in a post-pandemic world.

New Music Friday: February 5

It’s Friday again which means I got FIVE brand NEW tracks for you to go check out this weekend! While February is the shortest month of the year, that doesn’t mean we’ll be short of new picks! We’re loaded with talent this week. Rising artist Sam Fischer teamed up with chart topping pop artist Demi Lovato, Dutch DJ Martin Garrix collaborated with Swedish hitmaker Tove Lo, pop artist Sia joined up with French DJ David Guetta for a feel good song, American Idol alum Francisco Martin brings his latest to the world, and last but not least an all new track from actor/musician Aidan Alexander. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner for Friday, February 5, 2021!

“What Other People Say” by Sam Fischer & Demi Lovato

Yesterday, Australian singer-songwriter Sam Fischer released his duet collaboration with 2x Grammy-nominated artist, Demi Lovato. It’s called “What Other People Say,” and the two in my opinion made an incredibly powerful anthem.

Lovato’s strong vocals really illustrates the emotionally revealing lyrics which talks about losing who you were once were. You’ve become more attached to what the critics have to say or what your haters have to say. You’ve reached a really low point in your life. You’re not the same person as you were when you were an innocent child.

Fischer joins her on the second verse and later sings together through the remaining parts of the song which all in all makes for an amazing well-balanced single. It shows that when two artists come together to acknowledge their similar paths of changed hearts, perhaps things can turn around for the better.

In the music video, we see a Guess-Who styled game depicting the two musicians. In Lovato’s case, we see several descriptive words like “Aloof, Confident, Stubborn, Angelic and Naughty.” For Fischer, words like “Humorous, Touchy, Nervous and Impatient.” When the two sides of the board game starts spinning, it gets dizzying to watch but deep down I felt like that highlighted the confusion one might experience when they realized their current state of mind.

Listeners will get chills listening to this vulnerable song, so definitely go check this song out! Fischers and Lovatics will love it! I predict this track will be therapeutic and cathartic for them if they’re brave enough to reveal their own insecurities in life on social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram Reels. Hopefully you will have a strong support system in your life just like Fischer and Lovato does when everything is said and done.

Did you enjoyed this amazing collab? Share your comments below and let me know how you felt after hearing it. 😃

“Pressure” by Martin Garrix feat. Tove Lo

24-year-old DJ Martin Garrix dropped his first song for 2021 with Swedish singer-songwriter, Tove Lo doing the vocals. I thought this was an interesting sound/vibe. “Pressure” seems to be about a relationship that is like a game of cat and mouse. Depending on your significant other’s mood, you could be experiencing moments of deep passion with one another or you could be left in an tumultuous state where your lover might not be the lover you once thought they were towards you. You’re left wondering during times of tension but can also still be craving that attention from them while awaiting your next date (or hookup.) That’s the ups and downs of dating I suppose. It can be a double-edged sword for certain people.

Another interpretation of the song could lead you to thinking this song is just a passionate, hot and heavy love making song. The yearning of each other’s caress is high! If you’re in a healthy sexual relationship, and you need a song to dedicate to your lover, then this is a track you need to add to your shared playlists! For example, it would make for a great Valentine’s Day date night playlist addition. Let the hearts feel all the love! 💞

Sonically speaking, I thought it had a cool flow to it. Very groovy to the ears. Tove Lo’s vocals matched perfectly over the beats of the song. I don’t know about you but when she sings “ah-ah” at 2:05, it reminded me of the same “ah-ah” in her 2014 smash hit song, “Habits (Stay High).” It’d be interesting to see if they perform this track together in concert once the pandemic ends. Overall, if you’re fans of either artist, you’ll likely enjoy this track!

It remains to be seen what’s next for Garrix but I predict he’ll drop more singles later this year. Likewise for Miss Lo! Thoughts?

“Floating Through Space” by Sia & David Guetta

Sometimes just getting through the day is an accomplishment. That’s what pop hitmakers Sia & David Guetta are conveying in this song called “Floating Through Space.” It follows the recent single “Hey Boy,” her collaboration with Burna Boy. It also follows her collaboration with Guetta from last year, “Let’s Love” which already has over 70 million streams on Spotify.

You can hear this song on Sia’s upcoming soundtrack album, Music, out February 12th. Those songs will appear in said movie of the same name. The film will also be releasing in select theaters on that same day and on digital/DVD in March.

This latest track serves us a reminder that we’re all humans, we make mistakes, we fail at times and we should always exercise kindness. While we won’t see good days every single day, the fact that you’re alive and well should still be applauded. At the end of the day, we’re still “grains of sand,” a.k.a. tiny beings on this planet that’s “floatin’ through space!” Makes sense, right? So don’t sweat over trivial things, you can still persevere!

Watch the music video seen above for some cool skateboarding scenes done by three actors donning Sia-styled wigs. I love the slow-mo shots of them launching off the boards. It really captures the “floating energy” of the song’s lyrics. You fall and laugh it off, and you get back up. Overall, it looked like a fun session despite the falls! I give props to the actors, Bryan McGowan, Cory McMillin & Janthavy Norton who “suffered” for their craft. 😊😊😊

“Wild Girl” by Francisco Martin

American Idol alum, Francisco Martin has an up-tempo song out now called “Wild Girl.” It follows “Swollen” which was released last fall and has kicked off his professional career with great fanfare especially among his fans who’ve supported and voted for him when he was singing on the hit competition show.

Now as a signed artist to 19 Recordings, he’s taken the initiative in creating the sound you hear right now. I commend his authentic artistry thus far and for giving us another taste as to what’s to come — perhaps a full album later this year!

His bio might still say he “makes sad boy pop” but this is definitely a departure. He teased on his socials snippets of the music video production with actress Keana Marie (Dash & Lily) prior to today’s release.

In the music video, we see Martin and Marie having the time of their lives driving around through the desert and around town, sightseeing, goofing off in a bookstore, throwing shoes up on powerlines, even sharing a kiss by the shoreline. If they’re truly dating IRL, I support and ship it!

Martin shared that, “we spent the first few days of 2021 traipsing around SoCal filming this video and I’m obsessed with it.” You can tell they really enjoyed making the video, for sure! Major props to the crew members who brought Martin’s vision together beautifully.

“the end of the world” by Aidan Alexander

When the world seems like it’s crumbling down, all you need is a “friend for the end of the world according to social media influencer/singer-songwriter, Aidan Alexander. The 20-year-old artist’s latest tune should not go unnoticed. It follows his 2019 single, “Guts.” This new one will likely give you chills and goosebumps after hearing it in my opinion. Play the visualizer seen above for an even more dramatic impact!

Feel free to share it with your friends whether they need it or not. Let them know about this song if they’re pessimistic about the world or their own future or if they just need some human connection during this crazy pandemic! Hopefully this song will inspire you to reach out to your family and friends more often.

Overall, I thought the song had a great arrangement. When the strings enter around 1:00, that felt great to the ears. It really added to the surrealness of the song’s vibe.

If you’re a fan of Charlie Puth or Lauv, and haven’t heard of Alexander before, then you’ll be in for a treat! He has a similar sound to theirs and would make a great discovery/addition to your playlists this week and beyond.

New Music Friday: January 29

Hello and welcome back to another edition of New Music Friday! It’s January 29, 2021 and this week you should go check out the latest tunes from pop record producer Benny Blanco w/ Marshmello & Vance Joy, multi Grammy-nominated rock group The Killers, EDM record producer Sam Feldt feat. pop hitmaker Kesha, pop recording artist JoJo & last but not least Brit pop singer-songwriter/poet Arlo Parks!

“You” by Benny Blanco, Marshmello & Vance Joy

Artist and producer Benny Blanco teams up with DJ Marshmello and alternative singer, Vance Joy for a feel good upbeat track plus a whimsical stop motion animation music video!

This is Blanco’s first single for 2021 and the first time all 3 musicians have collectively worked together on a project. From a lyrical standpoint, I felt that this song deals with someone who has doubts in life or recently have lost confidence in a relationship, task or job-related responsibility. You cannot focus or tap into your gut feeling so the next best thing is to reach out to someone.

How you do so can vary! You can text with someone you love who lives far away and cannot be in your presence right now or spiritually communicate to a beloved ancestor that you can’t physically speak with, or even physically seek someone in real life that you can safely meet up for some advice and emotional support. So when times are tough, these three example methods are likely options for you to pursue.

The production values are superb overall and the song should give you a great pick-me-up if you’re feeling confused, stressed, lost, or mentally not yourself this week. Play this song if you want a slice of [Vance] joy (pun intended)!

As far as the music video is concern, I applaud the animation versions of the 3 artists. Props to their creative crew who put this all together. The storyline takes a lot of twists and turns but don’t worry, it has a happy ending. How did you feel after watching it? Let me know in the comments box down below.

“C’est La Vie” by The Killers

Chart-topping rock group, The Killers, surprised their fans with three new tracks in what’s dubbed their deluxe edition of their hit summer 2020 release, Imploding The Mirage.

This is such a neat song from them. It doesn’t sound like any of the other tracks on their most recent record. I love how lead singer Brandon Flowers sang this track. He talks about people living through the positive, exuberant times and the challenging and downright harsh times. Life isn’t perfect, we all know that and he’s reassuring us that we’re all human beings, so don’t fret everything! There will be ups and downs all throughout our lifetime.

I love the comparisons in each of the verses. Take for instance in the first verse and second verses:

Well, sometimes, you’re the hammer/And sometimes, you’re the nail/It’s not about how you get lost/It’s what you do to find the trail.

Well, sometimes, you’re the prisoner/And sometimes, you’re thе free/Just let your conscience bе your guide/When heartbreak hits you, c’est la vie

That’s life!

In addition to this track, there’s also a new version of “Caution” and an acoustic version of “Blowback.” The band has made their quarantine really productive and have already got another album, their seventh, already in the works. It’s slated to drop later this year. Are you excited for more Killers tracks later this year? What’s your favorite from the deluxe edition? Share your thoughts below!

“Stronger” by Sam Feldt ft. Kesha

Add this track too to your motivational playlists! DJ Sam Feldt teams up with pop star Kesha for an inspirational anthem that will leave you feeling refreshed and determined to conquer anything thrown your way!

Feldt shared some details about the song citing, “for me, “Stronger” is all about new beginnings – about becoming a stronger person through challenging times.” He added, “Back in the days I listened to all [of] Kesha’s track[s,] so when she approached me with the idea for the track “Stronger” I was very excited. The message Kesha sends with the track is really inspiring and super relevant in these turbulent times. That’s why I knew I had to be part of this message.”

The 27-year-old Dutch DJ crafted a wonderfully balanced track in my opinion. Kesha’s vocals are phenomenal and match in tone and delivery with the verses. While a song for the clubs in a post-pandemic world, this would also work well for montages or segments for television shows to celebrate perseverance, overcoming obstacles, and fighting for your own survival.

The music video seen above was beautifully made and has an important message at the end! I won’t spoil it for you. It definitely complements and symbolizes the song’s lyrics well!

Do you agree that this collaboration was a hit? I hope to hear more from Kesha later this year as she embarks on her fifth studio album era. How about you? Voice your comments below.

“American Mood” by JoJo

Singer-songwriter JoJo follows her first Christmas album, December Baby with a new single called “American Mood.” It’s a song that talks about the Dreamers and the silver spoon kids in the current state of America. Often the Dreamers have limitless potential but they cannot fulfill every goal they want to or they get shunned, restricted or stymied by white privilege, institutional racism, and discriminatory workplace practices.

I applaud the 30-year-old musician for raising awareness at the inequalities that’s sadly still continues in America. According to the description of her song’s music video, “proceeds from the song go to the “I Have A Dream” Foundation, which provides individualized social, emotion, and academic support to young people from low-income communities.”

If you’re a first-generation American with immigrant parents, or migrated from a foreign country and are in the process of getting your U.S. citizenship, then this song will resonate a lot. The lyric, “to all the kids without a silver spoon…you deserve much more, this one’s for you,” hits deep.

Sonically speaking, the melodies and harmonies are pretty. It’s refreshing to see JoJo expand her sound into the folk genre. If Taylor Swift can do it, so can JoJo! I’m looking forward to hearing where she goes with this in her next studio album effort. Perhaps she can make her very own folk album later this year. Share your predictions below.

“Hope” by Arlo Parks

20-year old British singer Arlo Parks released her debut studio album, Collapsed In Sunbeams today and the first single for 2021 is out now and it’s called “Hope.” Parks has a lovely voice and she’s reassuring us all that we’re not alone during this pandemic. Our feelings are valid when we feel despaired by the seemingly never-ending quarantining, the social distancing fatigue, and emotional and mental stress from hearing, watching and reading of the news headlines on TV, social media, etc.

She’s giving us hope that better days are ahead and hearing this song felt like an actual physical hug. Hopefully you feel the same after your hear this track!

In the music video, we see a girl played by English actress Molly Windsor, all alone and feeling sad in various social situations until Parks starts to hang out with her. It’s warm to see a hopeful scene play out like that. The video continues on as their friendship bond grows stronger and stronger after a lot of laughter, dancing and impromptu singing sessions.

While there will be blips of sadness here and there even after a friend lends their support, don’t fear the worst because as Parks sings, “you’re not alone like you think you are/We all have scars, I know it’s hard/You’re not alone, you’re not alone.”

New Music Friday: January 22

It’s Friday, January 22, 2021 and another New Music Friday post has arrived for you to go check out! The following FIVE picks are ones that I highly recommend this week and they’re from alternative pop singer Tate McRae, pop rock band Weezer, house music duo Silk City feat. Ellie Goulding, pop singer Sabrina Carpenter & EDM artist 3lau w/ Norwegian DJ Funkin Matt & featured rising vocalist Frawley!

“rubberband” by Tate McRae

17-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae continues to impress following her smash hit, “you broke me first” from last year. In “rubberband,” she talks about having regrets about a relationship.

She posted in the above video’s description that “snapping a rubberband is a way to get over something…. sometimes even a person. this song means a lot to me, i hope you guys love it.”

If you already broke up with the person you once dated and now have a ton of questions surrounding said breakup, then first off, you’re not the only one, and secondly, this song is suited for you to hear!

McRae really captures the essence of the struggle of post-breakup(s) in her choreographed moves. I appreciate her efforts for being vulnerable in crafting this song for her fans.

I predict this song will be a hit with the TikTok crowd. Young fans will likely be creating lip-synced videos of them snapping a rubber band (hopefully not too hard) on their wrists, as well as replicating her talented dance moves in their own creative clips.

It’s expected that this song will be a part of the young musician’s next EP which will drop later this year.

“All My Favorite Songs” by Weezer

Grammy-winning rock band, Weezer returns with surprise news of a new album not named Van Weezer. That album was suppose to drop last year to coincide with their coheadlining tour, the Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Green Day, but has since been pushed to May 2021. Instead, they are going ahead and calling this new project, OK Human their new fourteenth studio album. The lead single, “All My Favorite Songs,” is out now and the video stars the band alongside fellow actor Sonny Golden (Modern Family), and actress/dancer Monroe Cline as they teeter in and out of the virtual and reality worlds in the music video.

Sonically, it’s an upbeat jam but lyrically it contradicts all the happiness. You might take it from a quarantine perspective because the pandemic has messed with our overall mental health over the past year and our plans have been altered or been put on pause. So it’s okay to feel disappointed by the crisis. It’s a natural human instinct. It makes one think, at least from my own thoughts, would this album be made or even sound like this if it weren’t for the pandemic?!? Sometimes there are hidden blessings behind a dark moment in time such as this one and also as evident by the ending of the music video where Golden’s character meets someone new online a.k.a. Cline’s character and eventually befriends her.

The album, OK Human is a reference to fellow Grammy-winning rock group Radiohead and their 1997 album, OK Computer. The band posted on their socials a little background info about the album citing it “was made at a time when humans-playing-instruments was a thing of the past. All we could do is look back on ancient times when humans really mattered and when the dark tech-takeover fantasy didn’t exist.” The instruments they used were tuned to the ’60s and 70’s styles and with the orchestra sounding like the 18th and 19th centuries. They added, “we had no click track or loops or hi-tech sounds. Not even an electric guitar.”

There will be a total of 12 new tracks, including this one, on the new record. Are you excited for two Weezer albums this year? Let me know in the comments below!

“New Love” by Silk City feat. Ellie Goulding

Need a new dance track to add to your playlists this week? Then you’re in luck! Look no further to house music duo, Silk City’s latest collaboration with fellow pop singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. This track follows the group’s 2019 Platinum-certified hit “Electricity” with Dua Lipa.

In the music video for “New Love,” Goulding is seen singing and owning the stage with a big perm and donning trendy 1980s fashion! This is such a feel-good track that will have you dancing on your own living room floor! It will definitely raise your spirits/mood.

Lyrically, the song takes pride in showcasing the renewed self-love one has developed in their life. This could also branch out into overall self-image, body positivity and self-esteem as well as self-acceptance.

I give props to multi-Grammy winners Mark Ronson and Diplo, the masterminds behind this musical project. It’s another excellently produced single from them and having Goulding as their featured artist was the right choice!

Who knows?!? This could very well be eligible for numerous awards and accolades this year and in next year’s Grammy Awards! Thoughts?

“Skin” by Sabrina Carpenter

21-year-old singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter now signed under Island Records released her response track to the love triangle drama between her, actor Joshua Bassett (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) and Olivia Rodrigo (HSMTMTS.) Rodrigo’s “driver’s license” has seen a surge in mainstream popularity and success this month so it’s only fitting that Carpenter shared her side of the story.

Carpenter talks about how she’s happy with her relationship with Bassett and that Rodrigo shouldn’t “drive [herself] insane” about their romance. They could be friends but she doesn’t see they could even if they were to pretend to in another life. You can’t get under her skin while he’s on hers.

Overall, this is a fiery track and I applaud Carpenter’s candidness in telling her side of the story with her carefully crafted verses. She’s definitely showing her confidence and ability to not let others tell her how to feel. Expect this track to contend on the charts in the days and weeks to come.

As the songstress sings in the bridge, “I just hope that one day/We both can laugh about it/When it’s not in our face.” Hopefully this drama will get resolved publicly and they can remain at peace one day. At the end of the day, we should leave it up to the artists themselves to settle it and not let the fans misconstrue all the facts. “Everything” by 3lau & Funkin Matt feat. Frawley

Singer-songwriter Frawley joins 3lau & Funkin Matt’s latest collaborative project in “Everything.” This is an up-tempo song that talks about the fake love one can detect in an ex-lover.

You know they’re lying to you and even they know they’re lying to you despite showing up at your doorstep trying to convince you to date them again.

Frawley’s vocals are solid on this track and this song in my opinion has what it takes to be a really big dance/club hit in 2021!

3lau is promoting his new single in the world of NFT or Nifty Gateway, a blockchain powered world where you can earn cool collectibles. Read this article to get a better understanding of this innovative technology.

He also started the “Everything” scholarship which is open to any high school or undergraduate student. Check that out here.

New Music Friday: January 8

Happy Friday! It’s January 8, 2021 and this week we got five amazing picks for you to check out. There’s fresh tracks from pop star Zayn, Grammy-winning rock band Kings Of Leon, 10x Grammy winner Taylor Swift, Grammy-nominated EDM duo Galantis with TikTok star JVKE & indie pop band London Grammar. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post here at Philip’s Music Corner.

“Vibez” by ZAYN

27-year-old singer-songwriter Zayn Malik released his latest single “Vibez,” which is the first for this year and follows last year’s release, “Better.” His highly-anticipated new album, Nobody Is Listening drops next Friday. In this song, he’s just straight up vibing (pun intended) with his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. But for listeners/fans alike, the sensual feelings can be directed to your own respective lover. I thought the song’s lyrics were carefully thought out. It’s very intimate, passionate, and will fuel future healthy love-making sessions for days to come. A snippet of the chorus goes like this:

Don’t keep me waiting
I’ve been waiting all night to get closer
Yeah, you already know I got it for you
You know the vibes, know the vibes, put it on ya
If it movin’ too fast, we go slower

The music video opens up in a theater as if we were watching a Broadway play. It starts off with Zayn alone in a bedroom then he gets up to go for a drive in a mock mini car. It then cuts to Zayn on a treadmill walking through an imaginary forest filled with fireflies surrounding him then cuts to him on a boat named the S.S. Malik. He meets a friendly whale then goes back on land to sit on a couch which transitions back to the bedroom with another clone of Zayn watching from the theater seats. Very imaginative and an interestingly produced video. The description for the video recommends you to watch and listen to the video via headphones for a more immersive experience. How do you like the video? Share your feedback in the comments below.

Anyways, this song would make a perfect choice for your Valentine’s playlist(s) this year and beyond. It also would work well for your date night playlists. Enjoy!

You can expect a total of 11 tracks to be a part of the first time dad’s new album. Also, expect tour dates to be released once the pandemic clears. Visit his official website to stay updated on all the latest news.

“The Bandit” by Kings Of Leon

Nashville-based rock band Kings of Leon have emerged from their five year long hiatus this week with the announcement that their upcoming eighth studio album titled, When You See Yourself will be releasing on March 5th. Two new singles dropped yesterday afternoon giving fans a sampling at what’s to come.

There will be 11 new tracks on the new record. Lead single, “The Bandit” is what I would like to highlight this week. This black-and-white music video shows the band jamming out to the rocking new track. It’s another solid song from the Grammy-winning band if I do say so myself. I love the guitar melody/chord progressions. It really drives the song’s lyrics and Caleb Followill’s leading vocals.

This track was produced by Markus Dravs. For those who don’t know who Dravs is, he helped produced hit songs like “Paradise,” and “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay as well as “The Suburbs,” and “Reflektor” by Arcade Fire just to name a few.

On KOL’s Twitter page, they released the full track list plus the album art and in case you wanted to know how those look like, feel free to click here.

“it’s time to go” by Taylor Swift

Alas, the bonus tracks off Taylor Swift’s latest album, evermore are out! “it’s time to go” is about her past relationship with her old record label, Big Machine Label Group and the recent public drama surrounding her masters of her first six albums which were acquired by Scooter Braun and then later sold for profits without her consent. As we speak, she’s in the process of re-recording all her old albums so that she can claim the upper-hand again.

It’s also about when you have that gut feeling to leave, you have to listen to yourself and do so. It’s not a weak move, rather it’s the opposite as the 31-year-old sings, “Sometimes giving up is the strong thing/Sometimes to run is the brave thing/Sometimes walking out is the one thing/That will find you the right thing.”

This can also apply to a dead end job, a bad boss, a sour relationship with a friend, partner, etc. You know when your time is up in these situations and you have to cut them out of your life.

Sonically speaking, the track fits well with evermore‘s overall aesthetic. The National’s Aaron Dessner once again helped co-wrote the track with Swift and I give them both kudos for creating another smart song that’s smooth to the ears.

Feel free to check out “right where you left me,” the second bonus track off the deluxe edition of evermore. According to her Instagram post, that track is all about “a girl who stayed forever in the exact spot where her heart was broken, completely frozen in time.”

“Dandelion” by Galantis & JVKE

Swedish EDM group Galantis joins up with rising artist and TikTok star, JVKE in “Dandelion.” This is a song for those who fell in love but was dumped suddenly. The love you had was sadly just a temporary phase much like the life cycle of a real life dandelion flower. Dandelions go from flower to seeds and then disperse away with the wind in a relative short period of time.

See the chart below if you’re curious to see visuals:

Aurally speaking, the song still has an up tempo beat to it despite the heartbreaking verses. Love the overall production of this track. If you love any of Galantis’ previous work such as “Runaway (U & I)” or “Bones feat. OneRepublic,” you’ll likely enjoy this one too. It’s expected that this track will appear on Galantis’ fourth studio album which currently has no release date. Hopefully we will hear more from the hitmakers soon.

As far as JVKE’s talents, I give him props for expanding his career outside the TikTok realm by collaborating with the likes of Galantis. I wonder who he will work with next?!? What direction does he take as he enters his 20s soon? The 19-year-old artist has the potential to be the next Surf Mesa or Surfaces in my opinion.

Visually, the accompanying music video seen above shows JVKE vibing along some trippy backgrounds featuring planets, dandelions, butterflies, dolphins and more! Love the cool graphics and the colors used all throughout! How about you?

This song will definitely be on repeat for a long time! The whistling is soooo infectious! 😃

“Lose Your Head” by London Grammar

Indie pop group, London Grammar released the third track off their upcoming third album, Californian Soil. It’s called “Lose My Head,” and it’s quite an impressive track to hear.

It’s very lofty, ethereal, and pleasant for anybody to hear despite the dark undertones in the lyrics. The song itself is great for easy listening playlists, for those wake up in the morning playlists, meditation session playlists, and sitting by the fireplace kind of playlists!

Lead singer Hannah Reid stands aboard a makeshift sailboat in a sparkly outfit in the music video seen above. I love the use of the shimmery tarp-like fabrics to make it seem like she’s out in the ocean. The color scheme reminds me a lot like Taylor Swift’s Lover artwork.

From 2:45 and on in the video, it gave me chills as Reid gets swept into the proverbial “sea.” From my interpretation, this represents the risks of jumping out of your comfort zone. You don’t know what’s out there. Sometimes it can be rewarding but in this scenario, you’re left struggling. What that struggle truly is can vary depending on the listener.

I highly recommend you give this song by London Grammar a listen. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of their new album when it drops on April 9th!

New Music Friday: December 25

Hello everyone! Merry Christmas to those celebrating today! This week we have another round of amazing songs to go check out. All new music from Grammy-winning pop rock group Coldplay, indie pop band AJR, pop singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, DJ ILLENIUM and producer Dabin feat. Canadian singer-songwriter Lights & rising singer-songwriter Chaz Cardigan. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post for December 25, 2020!

“Flags” by Coldplay

Originally a bonus track on the now Grammy-nominated Everyday Life LP in Japan, “Flags” is finally released for the rest of the world! Coldplay posted on their socials explaining why they released this track earlier this week saying, “we love this song but by the time it came along the spaces on Everyday Life had been filled and we had to socially distance it. Thank you for all the ways you’ve supported us this year. We love & appreciate you more than you could know. Love c, g, w, j & p.”

I, a longtime fan of theirs can agree with that sentiment too! This song is a feel good jam that’s unifying for listeners all around the world despite our continued necessary lockdowns and socially distanced needs. No matter what our country of origin is or what our current residence is, we shouldn’t let others define who you are or what you should be doing in life. We have more in common than we think we do. We can’t let borders divide mankind. Self-love is what we all need! If we can love ourselves, we can in turn love others. In the chorus, lead singer Chris Martin sings, “you don’t need no flags to tell you who you are, so say I just want to be myself.” A great reminder in case anyone needed to hear that this week.

The guys never create a bad song in my opinion and that streak continues with “Flags.” It’s going to sound amazing when they perform this live one day! I hope a music video gets made for this bonus track.

As a side comment, you’re not going to find another mainstream pop song with references to Tchaikovsky or La Varsovienne. A very unique thing for sure, but I digress!

Lastly, I predict this will be performed at a future Global Citizen event or even have some sort of media placement during the rescheduled 2020 Olympics in Tokyo next summer! 😎

“My Play” by AJR

Indie pop band AJR is really feeding their fans this week with fresh announcements, content and more! This past Sunday, the brothers announced the name of their upcoming album will be titled, OK Orchestra, which is set to be dropped next spring, March 26, 2021! Pre-orders are available now! On Monday, they shared what the artwork for their forthcoming fourth studio album will look like. The new song “My Play” was released on Tuesday to the fans’ delight! And tomorrow, a one-of-a-kind virtual concert experience is set to wow them even more in the One Spectacular Night spectacle event! “My Play” will be played for the first time live tomorrow evening along with many of their previous hits and deep cuts from Living Room, The Click & Neotheater.

Going back to discussing this new single…”My Play” will really hit home for many listeners. From my understanding, it delves into children who grew up with divorced parents and the notion of growing up and adapting to the changes in separate households from their POV. It also brings attention to the child’s play or act he/she/they want to showcase in front of their parent(s) as a welcoming distraction. The uniqueness of this play is so special that it’s value can only be experienced once and only once! Otherwise, it loses meaning. Having the parents’ watch you perform is also another element to the whole situation. Do they pay attention? Do they really listen to you speak? It can really make or break how things shape out in terms of family dynamics, for sure!

Later in the song, when lead singer Jack Met sings, “it’s gonna get really, really, really, really bad before it’s okay,” I felt that and I feel for those families out there affected by a divorce or any other life-altering event. For example, you can even correlate that to today with the insanity that 2020 brought to us all and to everyone’s individual life. What the brothers have done was bring us some common ground in being seen by the lyrics while also sparking some hope moving forward. I applaud their candidness and willingness to translate all of that into an exceptionally well-crafted song.

I think that raw emotion will be a driving force on the new record and it’s already best illustrated on the album artwork itself. Ryan is looking towards the lighter side of the road, that’s optimism heading to a new season of life or perhaps the new year overall when we get closer to a post-pandemic world. Jack is in the middle caught in between both ends. That’s like the confusing moment such as now when times are still uncertain with the COVID cases still skyrocketing and yet vaccines are slowly making it’s way around the world. And then there’s a sad Adam on the right side of the road. You can’t help but feel the feels. This end is going to be the songs that represents the really down, bummer moments in life whether that be something from the past as a child or the present day trials and tribulations and in both cases, you think there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully those sad songs are disguised in a up-tempo way much like “Bummerland” was produced.

Overall, I’m excited for the new LP arriving in just 3 months time. I hope I get to see them play live again in 2021 but for now I will be cheering them on virtually tomorrow night for their One Spectacular Night concert event, which will be fun to watch. Definitely have to tune in to the Gary-Cam when “My Play” is played for the first time! Anyways, I’m so thankful for them and all of their hard work they put on to make their fans feel special in a year that’s been so trying. 😊

“Afterglow” by Ed Sheeran

Grammy winner, Ed Sheeran returns to the spotlight after a long hiatus. It’s his first release since Divide came out back in 2017. This new single talks about his wife, Cherry and the eternal love he has for her.

I love this sweet ballad from the 29-year-old singer-songwriter and first-time dad. It’s very heartfelt, genuine and honest. If you’re looking for a song to dedicate to your lover, significant other, what have you, then this song should definitely go on your playlists this week. It would make for a great song to listen to on a date, a song you would play during your first dance at a wedding, or any of your future anniversaries.

I also admire the minimalist aesthetic in the performance video seen above. No fancy bells and whistles required. Just poetic lyrics sung acoustic style. That’s all that’s needed!

Even though this song is a standalone single and won’t be featured in his next record, I’m grateful he gave us something to listen to before this year ends. A wonderful surprise/early Christmas gift. I’m looking forward to whatever he has in store for us in the new year and beyond! How about you? 😊

“Hearts On Fire” by ILLENIUM & Dabin feat. Lights

29-year old going on 30-year-old EDM hitmaker/producer ILLENIUM joins forces with Canadian artists, Dabin and Lights for an epic collaboration! The song talks about a relationship that’s heading in the wrong direction. You were once in love with this person but now as the days, months, and years go on, it seems like you both lost that spark. You start questioning what went wrong? Why have things shifted? Why can’t they read the signs that you give them?

This is the third single released off ILLENIUM’s untitled fourth studio album which is slated to be released some time in 2021. I enjoy Lights’ discography and if you do too, then this is a worthy pick for you to check out. Her vocals on this track really capture the essence of the song’s theme. It’s cathartic to hear and for those listeners out there who have experienced this kind of weird disconnect in a relationship, you will likely feel seen by this song. Overall, I like this hybrid electronic-rock sound they got going on here and if you love electronic music or any of ILLENIUM’s past works, then you’ll likely enjoy this new track as well.

It’d be interesting to see how this song will sound and be played in a live setting once it’s safe to attend concerts again. But for now, you’ll have to enjoy it from the comforts of your home. Turn up the volume! 😃😃😃

“Haircut” by Chaz Cardigan

25-year-old artist, Chaz Cardigan self-released his latest track called “Haircut.” He teased this song in a recent TikTok post which already garnered over 30,000 likes! This alt-rock song is a feel good way to leave 2020 behind and be inspired for exciting changes in the new year.

He talks about life and how the idea of getting a haircut can really change how you look and feel. It’s true from a visual POV that yeah, you will look different in the interim. But it’s more than that too, it symbolizes the evolution you go through in life. It’s a unique path for everyone whether you see that clearly or not. Hopefully this song does make things clear for you. Life isn’t short if you think that way. Life is long and has so many fruitful opportunities. It’s all in the mindset! Make a name for yourself! Do the things that make YOU happy and passionate!

Feel free to add this euphoric song to your playlists this week and let it kickstart a new positive attitude in 2021 and beyond! It will definitely be on loop on mine. 😉

New Music Friday: December 4

We’ve made it to the final month of 2020! Chill out with the following new tunes out this week! Pop boy band Why Don’t We, Grammy-winning artist/producer FINNEAS, EDM hitmakers Cheat Codes ft. Marc E. Bassy, pop duo Aly & AJ & Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna are my recommended picks for you to check out. Read all about them and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner for December 4, 2020.

“Lotus Inn” by Why Don’t We

Successful quintet boy band, Why Don’t We have released their next single off their forthcoming second studio album, The Good Times and The Bad Ones due in January 2021. It’s called “Lotus Inn,” and I strongly believe this will definitely be their next hit song which follows “Fallin’ (Adrenaline)” released earlier this fall.

From my interpretation, the song talks about catching eyes with somebody attractive and this budding relationship takes off like fireworks exploding in the sky as your newfound love takes your hand so you two can spend the night together at the “lotus inn.” I’ll leave the rest for you own take(s). The seemingly instant love connection that takes place is something to behold. You feel like you’re on cloud nine and want to re-live the heart thumping moment again and again!

Fans of WDW got an early invitational postcard late last month to visit the cozy looking lotus inn (clever marketing, Warner Music Group!). The actual website looks like a legit place to make a reservation too. Click here to see for yourself! It even has the date December 4th (TODAY) on the calendar. It will lead to their merch site if you do click on it, letting fans know that “all of the rooms are booked.” Also, do check out the Lotus Inn IG page for some cool interior shots and much more!

Overall, I believe teens and young adults will adore this upbeat love song from the guys! It will have you dancing along and swaying your hands to the beat of the song. Many will even have tears of joy as well for a multitude reasons like the sheer pride you have in the WDW fandom and the craftmanship the band has taken on in this era.

I can already tell this track will be a fan favorite when the band resumes touring duties in 2021 and it will sound amazing in an arena like setting.

“Another Year” by FINNEAS

FINNEAS offers his holiday song to the world and it doesn’t disappoint! This piano ballad/love song was beautifully written and produced. He talks about not needing Baby Jesus to save him, or a New Year’s resolution to change him. He doesn’t even need presents! The most important thing is spending time with your loved ones or your one true love this holiday season and beyond!

This is a song you need to have on your playlist if you just need something playing while reading a book in the living room with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa. This song has the power that matches a much needed big hug or like a well-deserved massage. It will provide a lot of comforting feelings as we close out what’s been an unprecedented 2020.

What’s funny is that the 23-year-old singer-songwriter/producer penned this track last year around this same time. He didn’t knew the lyrics would be so poetic for a crazy time like this. He posted on his Instagram, “I wrote this song this time last year but if I had known what would happen in the following 12 months, I wouldn’t have changed a line. Hope it gives you a little comfort.”

Good thing he didn’t change anything because the verses of this song are absolutely perfect!

So if you’re looking for a new holiday song to add to your collection that’s soothing to the ears, look no further to FINNEAS’ “Another Year.”

“Do It All Over” by Cheat Codes feat. Marc E. Bassy

EDM trio Cheat Codes have teamed up with San Fran native singer-songwriter Marc E. Bassy for an infectious new anthem about wanting to start over again. That’s what most would say when it comes to this year! Am I right?

The conflicting emotions and cycles of love and heartbreak can take a toll on you so this track will be relevant to those listeners out there who want that re-do in life when it comes to your love life. It can also apply to other aspects of life too, like say a job that you lost. You want and plead for that second chance. Perhaps it will end in the same result, but that doesn’t stop you from trying!

Sonically speaking, I love the arrangement of the beats with Bassy’s solid vocal performance. I especially love the added synths. It’s very addictive and definitely deserves to be played over and over again. This is an A+ collaboration!

This song will be a part of Cheat Codes’ upcoming debut studio album, Hellraisers due to be released next year. Expect more amazing collaborations and teaser songs to be dropped before then.

“Slow Dancing” by Aly & AJ

Vibe out with Aly & AJ’s latest single, “Slow Dancing.” This is such a mellow track that will leave you feeling refreshed after listening to it. The sister duo crafted a lovely soft pop song. Clear skin is just a click away!

Lyrically, it talks about missing someone you know and love because they’re living far away from you due to various reasons (e.g a long distance relationship, COVID-19 distancing from a family member/relative/friend, or your lover is on a long business trip).

The ladies indirectly mention quarantine life of 2020 and the political divisions in the U.S. we’re currently experiencing in the lines, “Hell’s bending, keeping me captive,” and “I’ve got my reasons to complain/And they’re tangled in red, white, and blue/The battlе outside is blazing/And all I’m thinking about is you” respectively.

In my opinion, this song is like Fleetwood Mac mixed in with the current sound of Vanessa Carlton alongside with some HAIM essence too. What do you guys think?

I feel like this song can literally be used in teen dramas with a literal “slow dancing” scene or a school prom scene for a high-school based series.

If you need to feel the feels or de-stress your troubles away, then this is your pick of the week! This song is slated to be a part of their fourth studio album. A release date has yet to be announced. I’m stoked to hear more from them in the near future!

“Dance Like Nobody’s Watching” by Yuna

Capping off this week’s picks is Yuna’s groovy new song called, “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching.” Forget sadness and heartbreak because music is the remedy for all of that. Literally, Yuna wants you to immerse yourself with your favorite song(s) including this one. Life is short too be upset about lost love.

Dance the night away as the 34-year-old singer-songwriter belts out gracefully these notable lines from the lyrics, “Dance like nobody’s watching (Oh, oh, oh)/’Cause you won’t be the one to save me (Yeah, yeah)” and in the post-chorus, “Gonna take my shoes off and be free (Ooh)/No one to tell me how to feel (Ooh)/I got a solution baby (Ooh). Dance like nobody’s watching.”

This song exudes confidence in moving on and being a strong independent person overall. This is a great track for future club playlists but for now it will have to settle for those “party for one in my own house/apartment” kind of playlists.

Sonically speaking, Yuna’s vocals are delicate like a dove’s feather. Very calming to the ears, breathy, and matches well with the tempo of the song. It’s not too slow nor too fast. Just right!

New Music Friday: November 13

No bad mojo or superstitious vibes in any of these selections on this Friday the 13th! This week we have brand new tunes from alternative pop singer Billie Eilish, indie rock band Foster The People, Australian recording artist Tones And I, EDM artist Joe Stone & pop singer Ally Brooke, and last but not least alternative folk band, Judah & the Lion. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner…

“Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish

Grammy winning artist, Billie Eilish is back with another new single from her upcoming second studio album! It’s called “Therefore I Am” and from my interpretation it’s the 18-year-old singer-songwriter calling out her haters, her fake fans/friends who use her name to get things they want in life like fame. She’s letting you all know that she isn’t your doormat to step on, so please step aside!

The music video is a free-spirited run through an empty mall, the Glendale Galleria in California to be more precise. Watching this video unfold was fun and entertaining. Eilish got to roam free without anyone chasing after her (until the end of course — haha!). Let the chaotic behavior begin!

First up, she got access to the Wetzel’s Pretzels which strangely had no staff working at the counter/register. She “stole” a pretzel from them and carried on without any care.

Then she took a quick elevator trip down to “steal” a doughnut from another kiosk. Running parallel to the lyrics from the pre-chorus/chorus seen below:

Did you have fun?
I really couldn’t care less
And you can give ’em my best, but just know

I’m not your friend or anything
Damn, you think that you’re the man
I think, therefore, I am
I’m not your friend or anything
Damn, you think that you’re the man
I think, therefore, I am

…you can tell Eilish really doesn’t care what people say about her yet she’s still having a blast and having a good time by herself as she grabs more food, a drink at a hot dog joint then some Chipotle chips then back to the hot dog place for some fries and of course a hot dog. I was like, “She’s going to run out of hands at this rate to hold all the “free munchies!””

But morality sinks in and a security guard is heard screaming in the background to tell her to get out of the mall. In reality, Eilish most likely got permission to shoot this iPhone style video with a small crew and paid her dues for those snacks and gave a lot of publicity for the mall itself for her appearance inside there!

Overall, this is one of the most peppiest songs of hers in my opinion out of the two previous singles that dropped for this new era, post-When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.

See “my future” for a more emotional and reflective Billie and “No Time To Die” for her orchestral James Bond anthem for the next Bond film of the same name which is slated for release in theaters next April.

The music video makes me miss the normalcy of being in a mall. It’s rather jarring to see an empty mall in 2020 and I hope 2021 will be brighter for the mall culture scene once this pandemic is over with.

“Under The Moon” by Foster The People

Whenever a new Foster The People song comes out, it feels like Christmas morning to me! With this latest single, “Under The Moon,” also comes the announcement of their forthcoming EP, In The Darkest of Nights, Let the Birds Sing which is slated for release on December 11th!

In the music video, lead singer Mark Foster is donning an all black outfit next to a black convertible as he sings in both low and high ranges. The song talks about a long distance relationship from my understanding. This song is for those who miss their better half. They could either be in an different state, country, time zone, what have you, for various reasons but the love they share can be equated to seeing the same moon under the night sky!

The lyrics to the song are poetic and the song from a production standpoint is nicely done with a lot of cool layers mixed in with Foster’s distinctive vocals. I enjoyed hearing the guitar chords mixed with the drums. It’s so soothing to the ears. Later in the song, it twists in sound. You really have to hear it for yourself to see how it evolves! That’s around the 3:20 mark.

Overall, it’s an all around feel-good track from the indie rock band that brought out hits like the fan favorite, “Pumped Up Kicks” which launched their success back in 2011 to more recent singles “Imagination,” “Pick U Up,” & “The Things We Do.”

I’m so excited to hear more from their upcoming EP next month. The aforementioned “The Things We Do,” plus “Lamb’s Wool” have been confirmed to be a part of the new EP’s track list. Let me know what your thoughts are about this song, feel free to comment below.

“Fly Away” by Tones And I

Australian pop singer, Tones And I penned a new uptempo song that will have you dancing on your feet. This follows the previous single, “Ur So F**king Cool,” as well as her breakout hit last year “Dance Monkey” which has been certified multi-Platinum by the RIAA.

The lyrics to this new song delve into someone who just wants to break free from the status quo or someone who wants to go against the social norms that they grew up hearing or following, and just do whatever it is in life that they want to pursue.

This is a great song for those who are unsure or previously unsure what they want to accomplish in life or for those who have a fear of failure but are now ready to try again. You can get some confidence back in life after hearing a song like this one.

Take this for example, you just graduated from high school or college and have now entered the next chapter in life — adulthood! You want to spread your proverbial wings and fly away. Whether that’s moving away from your childhood home to live in your own apartment or getting married and starting your own family in a new home, there’s simply no two paths alike for everyone to take. Personal and professional choices vary greatly! We’re all unique human beings on this Earth, so embrace the beauty of life and do what makes YOU happy!

I love the message and theme of this song that Tones And I (real name: Toni Watson) created here and I think it will resonate with EDM, alternative, indie and pop fans alike. So go check out this single today!

“Feeling Dynamite” by Joe Stone & Ally Brooke

The motivation train picks up steam with this pick called “Feeling Dynamite” by Spinnin’ Records artist, Joe Stone who collaborated with none other than pop singer-songwriter, Ally Brooke.

This is a high energy, positive, and uplifting anthem celebrating that blissful feeling when you’re feeling at your best either physically, emotionally, mentally, psychologically or all of the above.

Stone and Brooke produced and programmed the song together exceptionally well. The beats flow seamlessly alongside Brooke’s powerful vocals. The lyric video seen above has big bolded font set to a cosmic background that will enhance your “I’m on top of the world!” feelings. I applaud Brooke for expanding her reach into the world of EDM music.

Feel free to put this song on your gym/workout playlists this week and your party jams playlists too! Enjoy!

“Spirit” by Judah & the Lion

Alternative folk rock band Judah & the Lion released an inspirational new song for us to hear. The band posted on their Twitter page tweeting, “2020 has been painful, but true beauty comes through pain. We hope this song encourages all of us to never give up on each other and never give up on life. Sing with us!”

And rightfully so, I truly think this is a feel good anthem that will inspire us all, that will help us feel unified as a country and that will ease our worries because unity is stronger than division!

You can really feel the impact of lead singer Judah Akers’ voice especially when he sings “We got spirit and I know you hear it/There’s no give up, give up, give up/Give up, give up, give up, give up, give up, in us.” For some reason, he kind of has a similar vocal stylings of American Authors’ front man, Zac Barnett.

I strongly believe if you love Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver or NEEDTOBREATHE, you’ll enjoy Judah & the Lion’s songs including this latest track.

It remains to be seen if this song or their previous song release, “Beautiful Anyway” will be a part of their next album or EP effort. But I have a hunch it could. Feel free to share your predictions below.
