It’s Friday again which means I got FIVE brand NEW tracks for you to go check out this weekend! While February is the shortest month of the year, that doesn’t mean we’ll be short of new picks! We’re loaded with talent this week. Rising artist Sam Fischer teamed up with chart topping pop artist Demi Lovato, Dutch DJ Martin Garrix collaborated with Swedish hitmaker Tove Lo, pop artist Sia joined up with French DJ David Guetta for a feel good song, American Idol alum Francisco Martin brings his latest to the world, and last but not least an all new track from actor/musician Aidan Alexander. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner for Friday, February 5, 2021!

“What Other People Say” by Sam Fischer & Demi Lovato
Yesterday, Australian singer-songwriter Sam Fischer released his duet collaboration with 2x Grammy-nominated artist, Demi Lovato. It’s called “What Other People Say,” and the two in my opinion made an incredibly powerful anthem.
Lovato’s strong vocals really illustrates the emotionally revealing lyrics which talks about losing who you were once were. You’ve become more attached to what the critics have to say or what your haters have to say. You’ve reached a really low point in your life. You’re not the same person as you were when you were an innocent child.
Fischer joins her on the second verse and later sings together through the remaining parts of the song which all in all makes for an amazing well-balanced single. It shows that when two artists come together to acknowledge their similar paths of changed hearts, perhaps things can turn around for the better.
In the music video, we see a Guess-Who styled game depicting the two musicians. In Lovato’s case, we see several descriptive words like “Aloof, Confident, Stubborn, Angelic and Naughty.” For Fischer, words like “Humorous, Touchy, Nervous and Impatient.” When the two sides of the board game starts spinning, it gets dizzying to watch but deep down I felt like that highlighted the confusion one might experience when they realized their current state of mind.
Listeners will get chills listening to this vulnerable song, so definitely go check this song out! Fischers and Lovatics will love it! I predict this track will be therapeutic and cathartic for them if they’re brave enough to reveal their own insecurities in life on social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram Reels. Hopefully you will have a strong support system in your life just like Fischer and Lovato does when everything is said and done.

“Pressure” by Martin Garrix feat. Tove Lo
24-year-old DJ Martin Garrix dropped his first song for 2021 with Swedish singer-songwriter, Tove Lo doing the vocals. I thought this was an interesting sound/vibe. “Pressure” seems to be about a relationship that is like a game of cat and mouse. Depending on your significant other’s mood, you could be experiencing moments of deep passion with one another or you could be left in an tumultuous state where your lover might not be the lover you once thought they were towards you. You’re left wondering during times of tension but can also still be craving that attention from them while awaiting your next date (or hookup.) That’s the ups and downs of dating I suppose. It can be a double-edged sword for certain people.
Another interpretation of the song could lead you to thinking this song is just a passionate, hot and heavy love making song. The yearning of each other’s caress is high! If you’re in a healthy sexual relationship, and you need a song to dedicate to your lover, then this is a track you need to add to your shared playlists! For example, it would make for a great Valentine’s Day date night playlist addition. Let the hearts feel all the love! 💞
Sonically speaking, I thought it had a cool flow to it. Very groovy to the ears. Tove Lo’s vocals matched perfectly over the beats of the song. I don’t know about you but when she sings “ah-ah” at 2:05, it reminded me of the same “ah-ah” in her 2014 smash hit song, “Habits (Stay High).” It’d be interesting to see if they perform this track together in concert once the pandemic ends. Overall, if you’re fans of either artist, you’ll likely enjoy this track!
It remains to be seen what’s next for Garrix but I predict he’ll drop more singles later this year. Likewise for Miss Lo! Thoughts?
“Floating Through Space” by Sia & David Guetta
Sometimes just getting through the day is an accomplishment. That’s what pop hitmakers Sia & David Guetta are conveying in this song called “Floating Through Space.” It follows the recent single “Hey Boy,” her collaboration with Burna Boy. It also follows her collaboration with Guetta from last year, “Let’s Love” which already has over 70 million streams on Spotify.
You can hear this song on Sia’s upcoming soundtrack album, Music, out February 12th. Those songs will appear in said movie of the same name. The film will also be releasing in select theaters on that same day and on digital/DVD in March.
This latest track serves us a reminder that we’re all humans, we make mistakes, we fail at times and we should always exercise kindness. While we won’t see good days every single day, the fact that you’re alive and well should still be applauded. At the end of the day, we’re still “grains of sand,” a.k.a. tiny beings on this planet that’s “floatin’ through space!” Makes sense, right? So don’t sweat over trivial things, you can still persevere!
Watch the music video seen above for some cool skateboarding scenes done by three actors donning Sia-styled wigs. I love the slow-mo shots of them launching off the boards. It really captures the “floating energy” of the song’s lyrics. You fall and laugh it off, and you get back up. Overall, it looked like a fun session despite the falls! I give props to the actors, Bryan McGowan, Cory McMillin & Janthavy Norton who “suffered” for their craft. 😊😊😊
“Wild Girl” by Francisco Martin
American Idol alum, Francisco Martin has an up-tempo song out now called “Wild Girl.” It follows “Swollen” which was released last fall and has kicked off his professional career with great fanfare especially among his fans who’ve supported and voted for him when he was singing on the hit competition show.
Now as a signed artist to 19 Recordings, he’s taken the initiative in creating the sound you hear right now. I commend his authentic artistry thus far and for giving us another taste as to what’s to come — perhaps a full album later this year!
His bio might still say he “makes sad boy pop” but this is definitely a departure. He teased on his socials snippets of the music video production with actress Keana Marie (Dash & Lily) prior to today’s release.
In the music video, we see Martin and Marie having the time of their lives driving around through the desert and around town, sightseeing, goofing off in a bookstore, throwing shoes up on powerlines, even sharing a kiss by the shoreline. If they’re truly dating IRL, I support and ship it!
Martin shared that, “we spent the first few days of 2021 traipsing around SoCal filming this video and I’m obsessed with it.” You can tell they really enjoyed making the video, for sure! Major props to the crew members who brought Martin’s vision together beautifully.
“the end of the world” by Aidan Alexander
When the world seems like it’s crumbling down, all you need is a “friend for the end of the world according to social media influencer/singer-songwriter, Aidan Alexander. The 20-year-old artist’s latest tune should not go unnoticed. It follows his 2019 single, “Guts.” This new one will likely give you chills and goosebumps after hearing it in my opinion. Play the visualizer seen above for an even more dramatic impact!
Feel free to share it with your friends whether they need it or not. Let them know about this song if they’re pessimistic about the world or their own future or if they just need some human connection during this crazy pandemic! Hopefully this song will inspire you to reach out to your family and friends more often.
Overall, I thought the song had a great arrangement. When the strings enter around 1:00, that felt great to the ears. It really added to the surrealness of the song’s vibe.
If you’re a fan of Charlie Puth or Lauv, and haven’t heard of Alexander before, then you’ll be in for a treat! He has a similar sound to theirs and would make a great discovery/addition to your playlists this week and beyond.
