New Music Friday: December 11

Greetings! It’s December 11, 2020 which means it’s Friday once again! This week we have an assortment of new songs to check out. There’s all new music from pop stars Taylor Swift, and Gwen Stefani, indie pop band Foster The People, Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson & actress and pop recording artist Victoria Justice. All that and more in this week’s post.

“willow” by Taylor Swift

Pop superstar Taylor Swift surprised the Swifties yesterday with the announcement of her ninth studio album, evermore. It will be known as the sister album to the #1 Platinum-selling album, folklore which was released back in July. This time, another 15 new songs (+2 bonus songs on the deluxe edition) are heading your way!

Swift wanted to surprise us with new music since she’s turning 31 in two days. 31 is backwards for 13 which is her favorite lucky number. Whenever something significant comes up numerology speaking, you know she wants to do something special for her fans. She also wanted to provide some additional comfort given the challenging year it’s been thus far. Music is truly the connection we all need during a pandemic!

In “willow,” the first single off the new record, Swift picks off where the “cardigan” music video left off. She re-enters the fantasy world deep inside the piano again, following a shiny sparkly golden string. The National’s Aaron Dessner returned to produce the single as well as helped co-write the song.

Directed by Swift too, the 30-year-old singer revealed that this song, “is about intrigue, desire, and the complexity that goes into wanting someone. I think it sounds like casting a spell to make somebody fall in love with you (an oddly specific visual).”

Dancer Taeok Lee joins the video as Swift’s co-star. “You’ve seen my co-star in this video somewhere before.” Do you guys know? In case you didn’t, he’s one of her tour dancers! Read more about him, here.

Swift also shared that “One scene represents how I feel about fame. There’s a scene to represent each season throughout the journey of the video.” Her imagination and vision in her music videos are truly limitless. 👏👏

Overall, I really enjoy this well thought out music video which was shot safely under COVID-19 protocols, as well as the cool scenery and effects featured all throughout. We really don’t deserve her to be honest! She’s making the Swifties feel warm and toasty this winter, that’s for sure!

She’s such a master at crafting her music from start to finish and it definitely shows again. Expect more awards and accolades in 2021 for this phenomenal piece of art!

Be sure to check out the rest of the album which has collabs from Bon Iver and The National again plus one from the hit sister trio HAIM too! Take a look at her letter on the release of the album here:

“Let Me Reintroduce Myself” by Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani, singer-songwriter and coach on the hit NBC singing competition show, The Voice, is back to her pop roots since four years ago with this new track. Released earlier this week, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” is her way of saying she never really left. This isn’t a comeback! She sings that she’s still the “original old me,” mentioning that she’s not your dusty old records on your shelf while also referencing her famous spelled out lyric, “bananas” from her 2004 smash hit, “Hollaback Girl.” She’s here to provide a little joy in 2020.

The song is really fun and catchy to listen to just like all of her previous hits if I do say so myself. It reminds me a little bit of those No Doubt/Rock Steady days too. Do you agree? The 51-year-old singer debuted the song earlier this week on The Voice. Check out this clip of her performance and her fiancé, Black Shelton praising her new song.

Stefani still has that youthful look to her compared to 20 years ago and fans of hers will definitely dig the new track, the first of many more to come in the new year I hope. “LMRM” will be a part of her fifth solo studio album effort, whenever that comes to fruition.

“Cadillac” by Foster The People

Mark Foster and the guys of Foster The People are back with a six-track EP titled, In The Darkest Of Nights, Let The Birds Sing. All of the songs are worthy of your listen but “Cadillac” in particular is my new current fave. It has a different groove compared to their last promotional single, “Under The Moon.”

It’s safe to say this song is a nod to his newlywed wife and star of Netflix’s Ozark, Julia Garner. “Cadillac” is for all those people out there who have a significant other that they want to drive around with. They’re your soulmate for life and you want them to feel special. Foster sings, “Come with me, my queen/I wanna go with you еverywhere to lift your crown higher/You’ll always be my queen/I wanna go with you everywhere and lift your crown.” Such an empowering and sweet lyric!

Sonically, it’s an uptempo song filled with well executed layers. I especially love how Foster incorporates his vocal range — the low and high ends work well in their respective parts. The outro of the song is nothing I have ever heard from anyone else. Very unique and fresh overall!

Check out the colorful visualizer for some cool driving into the sunset vibes!

Be sure to check out the rest of the new EP which includes their previous releases “Under The Moon,” “The Things We Do,” & “Lamb’s Wool.”

You can pre-order exclusive vinyl version of the EP, here.

“Christmas Dreaming” by Cody Simpson

Get in the Christmas spirit early with Cody Simpson‘s version of Frank Sinatra’s classic 1957 holiday song, “Christmas Dreaming.” This is a lovely track to play by the fireplace with your Christmas tree lit up in the living room.

Simpson’s slow and soft baritone vocals would make the late great Sinatra proud! A very classy track from the 23-year-old Australian singer. He did this song justice in my opinion. I love the single artwork for that old-timey classic look. There’s no need for any crazy embellishments on the song, just an acoustic guitar strumming alongside his voice. It has a modern sound that even Gen-Z listeners will love and enjoy! Do you guys agree?

If you need a new holiday song to put on your playlists this month, feel free to add Simpson’s today!

“Treat Myself” by Victoria Justice

Actress Victoria Justice returns to the music scene. It’s her first new song in seven years and this time Justice is taking the steps in recording her first full length album (tentatively to be released next year).

She posted on her socials the importance of making this song:

This song is for those listeners out there who’ve been harsh critics of themselves. But the catch is, you’re taking the steps at turning over a new leaf. You want to refocus your personal or professional goals in life by letting go of that bad energy you once possessed. Hopefully this song will help you on your personal journey and as we approach the new year with new opportunities, may it help you get some much needed clarity and a boost to your self-esteem.

If you like artists like Julia Michaels or Selena Gomez, you’ll enjoy Justice’s latest tune. I feel like her voice has matured so much since her Victorious days and I’m really looking forward to hearing more songs in the coming months. How about you?

New Music Friday: October 9

Hey everyone! Thanks for taking the time in reading this week’s New Music Friday post here at Philip’s Music Corner! For this week’s picks, we have all new music from alt-rock artist YUNGBLUD, legendary rock band AC/DC, English girl group Little Mix, EDM group Cash Cash with featured artist, Georgia Ku & American Idol finalist Francisco Martin. Let me know what you think of these picks in the comments below. I’ve added a new thumbs up and thumbs down feature under each song so you can vote how you feel.

“cotton candy” by YUNGBLUD

23-year-old alternative rock singer-songwriter YUNGBLUD (real name: Dominic Richard Harrison) released his latest single titled “cotton candy.” This song is about him hooking up with multiple people but also about his infatuation with this one person whom he compares to cotton candy. He just wants to get stuck and be in love with this girl just how cotton candy were to get stuck in between your teeth.

I enjoy the vibes in this track. It’s a feel good track, for sure! If you’re looking for a new love song to add to your playlists this week then look no further to this one. The lyrics from the chorus which goes, “I’m losing myself in you/in you, in you, in you, I know.” will literally be stuck in your head after hearing it. This song will definitely be playing on loop this weekend! Give it a listen!

“Shot In The Dark” by AC/DC

After the sudden passing of rock legend Eddie Van Halen this week, we could all use a pick-me-up more than ever right now! Fellow Australian rockers, and journeymen in the music industry for nearly five decades, AC/DC are back and ready to rock!

Rock fans or anyone who just want to tune out the depressing news cycle will be craving this song. The first line in the song goes, “I need a pick me up,” and don’t we all!?! With the ongoing pandemic and all the other crazy events that have happened so far in 2020, sign me up for a good ‘ol time!

I love the fact that this song dropped in 2020. Even though it could have literally been released in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, what have you, it will still have that classic rock feel to it! Having growing up listening to a lot of classic rock like the aforementioned Van Halen, Journey, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, The Who and U2 on the radio, I appreciate the rock genre.

Finally in 2020, we get a pure standout rock song that makes for a timeless track for years to come! There’s no modern twist, no genre-blending, no random trap beats, no featured artists. Instead, we have good old fashioned guitars and drums, and Brian Johnson’s iconic lead vocals on this track. This jam needs to go on your playlists this week! 😎

“Not A Pop Song” by Little Mix

Hey Mixers! The hit British girl group, Little Mix, just dropped their third single from their upcoming sixth studio album, Confetti and it’s quite the banger. It appears they are sticking it to the man, in this case their former boss, Simon Cowell. They left his label, Syco Music in 2018 after they had wrapped up their fifth album, LM5. Leigh-Anne Pinnock sings in the pre-chorus, “I don’t do what Simon says/Get the message ’cause it’s read/That’s just life it never plays fair/Said to follow any dream/Be a puppet on a string/Works for you but that isn’t me.”

Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson & Jade Thirlwall join Pinnock in the anthemic chorus, declaring that this song is not going to be the cliché typical pop song about love, heartbreak, or party song about drinks and drugs. They are breaking away from pop music norms and doing it their own way now with their new label RCA U.K. Hopefully they got to have more creative freedom with the new record which will be releasing next month. I’m excited to hear the rest of their new album which will undoubtedly showcase their powerhouse vocals and amazing songwriting abilities. Share your thoughts about their new song and album in the comments box below.

“Love You Now” by Cash Cash feat. Georgia Ku

New Jerseyan EDM group, Cash Cash has a new collaborative effort out now with English singer-songwriter Georgia Ku. It’s called “Love You Now” and it’s about a breakup that still has lingering feelings. You start wondering who will love your ex. Who will hold their hands? Who will be the new person in their life who will hug them?

A tough subject for many for sure and if you’re feeling conflicted with your relationship status or love life in general, then this song is for you! I thought Ku’s vocals really captured the essence of Cash Cash’s production in this single.

Watch the lyric video seen above for some cool hands animation set against the night sky. Props to whoever designed and executed that. It really fits the theme of the song. The hands never touch. Close but never in full grasp. It’s a perfect illustration of lost love. The shooting stars going at different directions and the glowing auras/energies from the hands fluctuating different colors, so you can tell the emotional and physical differences in a relationship that took place.

“Swollen” by Francisco Martin

American Idol alum, Francisco Martin who finished in the top 5 in this year’s competition, just dropped his debut single with his new record label, 19 Recordings today! It’s called “Swollen” and according to the demo version of this song, it’s about a girl he met last year that he no longer talks to anymore, however he still wishes she is doing well these days.

Shot in a tranquil and wide open field, this beautiful music video has some gorgeous drone shots. Martin is seen walking along a trail as the drone drifts further and further away high above all the trees. What a perfect metaphor illustrating the separation from someone you thought could be your significant other (or best friend.)

Overall, this is a lovely acoustic song that makes you want to hug someone after hearing it, it may even make you a little teary-eyed. The chords to this song are soothing and sweet to the ears. I thought Martin chose a perfect song to kickoff his major label debut. I’m intrigued as to why him and his team put “Part 1” in the above video’s title. Could there be more versions of the song down the line? Or perhaps a continuation of the theme of this song in another song soon? We’ll just have to wait and see!

UPDATE 10/16/20: Part 2 is the Official Music Video!

New Music Friday: September 18

Happy Friday folks! This week’s I’m highlighting the latest songs from Grammy-winning artist, Sam Smith, EDM hitmaker Kygo with his remix of one of Donna Summer’s timeless songs, pop singer MAX featuring SUGA of mega hit sensational K-pop group, BTS, alternative band LANY and last but not least, indie pop artist Rachel Platten.

“Diamonds” by Sam Smith

4x Grammy-winner, Sam Smith returns with their latest single off their upcoming third studio album, Love Goes which drops October 30th!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, Smith had to delay the release of SS3 which was originally titled, To Die For from May 1st, to June 5th and ultimately til this fall at the end of next month. Overall, this album cycle took up two years of his life to make. So in that span of time, a lot of events and personal life moments definitely were captured in this album’s essence. They call “each song a separate story” and that the process of making the new record was “magical, therapeutic, and FUN.”

See the full letter he posted to his fans here:

This single follows the release of “My Oasis” back in July which featured Nigerian singer-songwriter, Burna Boy. Smith also teamed up with Demi Lovato in the charted single, “I’m Ready” earlier this year. Both songs will appear in the new album’s tracklist.

In “Diamonds,” Smith doesn’t hold onto material love anymore. They dance solo in this upbeat electropop track showing confidence and poise while illustrating the navigation of this new chapter in life without this lover who took them for granted.

Are you looking forward to hearing the rest of Smith’s third album soon? What do you think about this new song? Share your comments below.

“Hot Stuff” by Kygo & Donna Summer

Kygo returns with another remix of another legendary artist! This time he’s taking on The Queen Of Disco a.k.a. the late Donna Summer’s dance classic, “Hot Stuff.” It follows his previous remixes of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do,” and the late Whitney Houston’s “Higher Love.”

In the music video for “Hot Stuff,” we see Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes, two of the stars of Netflix’s hit drama, “Outer Banks” as the two lovers seen having a blast together. They definitely have that lovey-dovey couple vibe to them and shown great chemistry in this video. It must’ve been a really enjoyable time producing this on set in Carolina Beach, North Carolina.

Like the original version from 1979, this iteration will also put you in high spirits after listening to it. Put this on your feel good playlists today and dance to your heart’s content!

I wonder what Kygo will do next!?! He’s been picking so many iconic songs from equally iconic artists lately for his remixes. Which artist would you like to see him reimagine next? Let me know in the comments box down below.

“Blueberry Eyes” by MAX feat. SUGA of BTS

This is the summer of fruit based songs! Harry Styles can claim the watermelon but pop singer MAX has rightfully done justice for the blueberry!

MAX has made a tender love song for all those couples out there who are living on cloud 9 with each other. His real life wife, Emily stars alongside him in the music video and they are expecting their first child later this December. I enjoy all the blue aesthetics/wardrobe they wore in making this video. I thought it was a cute and sweet video from start to finish.

BTS member Suga lends his vocals for a verse. The two are very good friends and this is the second time they have worked together. See: “Burn It” for the first instance in which MAX was the featured artist and Suga was the leading vocal under his other stage name Agust D.

In a short message attached to the video, MAX cites:
“Bringing this music video to life has been such a special experience. I wanted it to feel as if Disney magically made a baby with Wes Anderson in the world of Colour Vision with every bit of our souls intertwined. Emily is my actual wife and she is really pregnant right now with our first child, so art imitates life in a fun way with this video. We studied and memorized all of the Korean lyrics to Suga’s incredible and romantic verse and all of the blueberries in the bathtub ended up being reused to create limited edition blueberry dyed blueberry eyes shirts. This video is a piece of our hearts and I hope it sparks the same magic in you viewing it as it did for us creating it. Thank you to Suga for being so brilliant on this song and more importantly for being a wonderful friend. Much love.”

For what’s been a crazy 2020 thus far, it’s comforting to hear songs like this one, so you should definitely add this to your playlists this week.

“cowboy in LA” by LANY

Continuing the warm loving sentiments is this latest tasting from LA based alternative band, LANY’s upcoming third album, Mama’s Boy. In “cowboy in LA,” lead singer Paul Jason Klein brings up his Oklahoma roots and how it’s made him a unique, caring and respectful man he is today. He wants to take things nice and slow with his date and thinks beautiful things and places like the sunset, swaying palm trees and Malibu respectfully are all pale in comparison to his lover. Instead of going to the club or going to a crowded place, he would rather do something more romantic 1 to 1 in order to establish a deeper connection with each other.

It’s such a nice mellow track to listen to and overall, the lyrics were beautifully written. This song follows the release of “Good Guys,” “If This Is The Last Time,” & “You!” earlier this summer. 10 more unreleased tracks are going to be a part of the next album so expect all the feels coming October 2nd!

“Soldiers” by Rachel Platten

Singer-songwriter Rachel Platten is back everyone! Now as an independent artist, she penned another powerful anthem for you all to hear. On her socials, she revealed why she wanted to release this song:

“Its my answer to all the division and confusion around us. I really believe that we NEED art and beauty of all kinds right now to help remind us who we are and that we all have the same beating hearts. So this is my little call to creators of all kinds – we need YOU.”

She goes on to say that “we need your brave voices and your truth. Keep sharing your beauty. We might fall but we won’t break!”

Personally, I admire her career thus far, and I love that she’s not doing it all for just the fame, and the glitz and glamour. If you loved “Fight Song,” this is like the continuation of that song. You can definitely feel the loving connection in this ballad as evident by the reassuring chorus, “No matter how the light may fade/We’ll carry on, it’s how we’re raised/Yeah, we might fall/But we won’t break/Yeah, we won’t break.”

Overall, it’s such a heartfelt song that deserves your attention this week and I hope you add this one to your playlists as well! May this song give you strength in what’s been a challenging year thus far!

I’m excited to hear what’s next for Platten and what her next album will sound like. How about you? Share your feelings in the comments box below. 🙂

That wraps up this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner. If you liked what you read and want to stay updated on all future blog postings, then kindly hit the follow button below. Thanks! Stay safe and happy listening! 🎵 😄

New Music Friday: August 28

Hello all! Happy Friday! Philip’s Music Corner brings you another exciting edition of picks for you to listen to this weekend! This week’s lineup includes two powerful collaborations in BLACKPINK with Selena Gomez and Calvin Harris with The Weeknd. There’s also new tracks from Katy Perry, 5 Seconds of Summer and ILLENIUM. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday for August 28, 2020!

“Ice Cream” by BLACKPINK & Selena Gomez

K-pop girl group sensation, BLACKPINK have teamed up with pop icon Selena Gomez for a fun track called “Ice Cream.” It’s the first time the two artists have worked on a song together. The collaborative effort has earned the nickname Selpink across social media. This is a really catchy tune sonically speaking, perfect for that late-summer vibe at the beach with your friends/family or poolside hangout.

The brightly colored music video is filled with a lot of flavors, if you will. In it, it alternates with Gomez driving an actual ice cream truck to singing and posing in front of a vintage convertible car, and the girls of BLACKPINK playfully interacting on very Instagrammable sets. Both artists are dressed stylishly for the summer heat!

Did You Know? The track was co-written by Grammy-winning pop artist, Ariana Grande. You can hear some influences of Ms. Grande’s vocal stylings when BLACKPINK member Jennie sings in the second verse.

Did You Know? The entrepreneurial Selena Gomez teamed up with Serendipity in creating her own ice cream flavor: Cookies ‘n Cream Remix (pink vanilla ice cream and cookie pieces)

Back to discussing the song, the post chorus is very addictive the more you listen to it. “Ice cream chillin’, chillin. Ice cream chillin'” Doesn’t that make you crave an actual ice cream cone/cup right about now? With the summer months still heating up across the country, it’s very fitting to have one to cool us all down.

Overall, this is a collaboration that works well and it will benefit both fandoms moving forward. I predict this will go viral over the next 24 hours, and maybe perhaps reclaim the title of most views over the first 24 hour period for a music video which was previously held by BLACKPINK until fellow K-Pop group, BTS took the #1 spot last week with their new song, Dynamite.

Lastly, I just wanted to point out the continuing trend of female artists coming together in 2020. Notable mainstream examples include BLACKPINK & Lady Gaga in “Sour Candy” and Doja Cat & Nicki Minaj in “Say So.”

“Over Now” by Calvin Harris (with The Weeknd)

Moving along with this second pick of the week is EDM-hitmaker Calvin Harris with his latest collaboration with R&B/pop artist, The Weeknd in “Over Now.” The song is about a guy who’s literally done with his ex. There’s no more second chances, no more redo’s, no more going back to the girl he once called his girlfriend. For both parties, it’s best to move on and that’s the overall message of the song. The Weeknd’s smooth vocals layed over this groovy arrangement made for a very lit track in my opinion. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments box below.

This is the first time the two artists have worked together and to be honest, they hit it right out of the park on their first try! The Weeknd’s popularity has soared in 2020 with his smash hit song “Blinding Lights” which is certified Platinum by the RIAA and is also a Billboard Hot 100 mainstay approaching 40 weeks straight on said chart. I expect this song will also go to #1, giving the two artists yet another mainstream hit to their credit.

The accompanying music video for this single features a computer generated version of The Weeknd dancing and pouring his heart and soul out as he sings the song with trippy backdrops of cityscapes, shrooms, and outer space scenery. Props to the visual effects artists who brought this vision to life.

“Cry About It Later” by Katy Perry

What a week pop star Katy Perry is having! Just two days ago, she became a first time mom by giving birth to her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. Now today, her fifth major studio album, Smile is officially out! She joked on her IG page by posting a meme that this was her second child.

This uptempo song is great for those who want to move on from a relationship and just de-stress overall. There’s no need to be down on yourself because you can find someone new and shed your tears afterwards.

The animated video for the song gave me Chilling Adventures of Sabrina vibes for some reason. Very cute. What are your thoughts? Voice them in the comments box down below. You can see the other Smile Series videos, by clicking here.

Perry is embracing her new chapter in her life both professionally and personally, so this song is a perfect addition to her discography. Hopefully this breath of fresh air a.k.a. the new album era is resonant with the fans this time around. We don’t want to see Perry lose her smile again!

“Kill My Time” by 5 Seconds of Summer

Australian pop rock band 5SOS is back with a bonus track off their album, CALM which has a new iteration called CALM PLUS1. The song was previously exclusive to their online merch store but now it’s available on all streaming platforms. This single has a very 1980’s feel to it in my opinion. Singer-songwriter, Luke Hemmings discusses being in love with someone but there’s a catch, he awaits what she decides since this girl is also in a relationship with somebody else too! He doesn’t want to kill his time with anyone else but her. He talks about his desires to take her to the dive bar downtown and the prospects of having a fun time.

Love is truly complicated and I’m sure there are 5SOS fans who can relate to this situation and will connect well to this song. But if not, and you’re like me, you can still enjoy this track for its unique arrangement and overall sound. I appreciate the maturity this group has gone through over the years and I’m looking forward to what’s to come!

“Nightlight” by ILLENIUM

Capping off this week’s picks is this new single from Nick Miller, DJ, musician and record producer better known for his stage name, ILLENIUM. This is the first single off his forthcoming fourth album, title TBD. It follows his 2019 album release of Ascend which spawned the hits “Takeaway” with The Chainsmokers and Lennon Stella and “Good Things Fall Apart” with Jon Bellion. Both songs are certified Platinum by the RIAA.

“Nightlight” is a love song with vocals from the angelic and soothing Annika Wells. She’s a Californian singer-songwriter with previous credits on ILLENIUM’s past albums Awake and Ascend. I enjoy this song for the vocals and for it’s production. The distorted sounding guitars plus Wells’ vocals match really well together.

Thematically, the song is about someone in love with somebody and that somebody is their ride or die. This special someone help you get through the tough time(s) in life.

Hopefully in 2021, ILLENIUM can resume touring and can showcase the songs he’s cooking up in quarantine from his next album.

That does it for this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a call to action in light of the recent news of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin who was shot by a police officer 7 times in the back in front of his three kids this week. Truly sad what the world has become as of late. Please consider helping out by visiting this link: or by donating to the GoFundMe page at:

As always, please stay safe, and be kind to one another. Happy listening!

New Music Friday: August 21

Happy Friday once again! It’s time to list the five tracks you need to hear this weekend! This week’s lineup includes new songs from K-Pop global superstar group, BTS, Grammy-nominated pop star, Katy Perry, 2x BRIT Awards-nominated indie band, London Grammar, alternative rock band, American Authors, and last but not least, rising singer-songwriter, Greyson Chance. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday for August 21, 2020 here at Philip’s Music Corner!

“Dynamite” by BTS

K-pop superstar group BTS have dropped their latest song called “Dynamite.” This is just the second all English single they’ve released following the 2017 Steve Aoki/Desiigner collaborative track, “MIC Drop (Remix).”

This song will lift your quarantine spirits up and boost your mood. It’s a very danceable track that channels that 1980s vibe and the disco days. The seven-member boy band is slated to perform this fun new song for the first time on national TV on August 30th at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards in New York City. So look forward to that BTS ARMY!!!

The music video features a colorful array of choreographed numbers in various scenes including a bedroom featuring a poster of the late great David Bowie, a record vinyl store, a small doughnut shop, a basketball court, a building appropriately named “DISCO” in all caps, and lastly on a ground level stage on a field with the sun shining down upon them. The bright hues and the visual effects made this an appealing video to watch.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty catchy tune especially the bridge section of the song. If you’re feeling sad or stressed, definitely check this song out and repeat it as many times as you like. I predict this song will catapult them to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Charts next week, if they do, it will be their first #1 song.

“What Makes A Woman” by Katy Perry

Pop singer-songwriter, Katy Perry dropped another promotional single before her new album, SMILE drops next Friday. In “What Makes A Woman,” which she dedicates to her unborn daughter, she acknowledges that it’s hard to measure the worth of a woman. Women can do so many amazing things in life, they cannot be boxed or shaped as one thing and one thing only. They adapt and change as the years goes by, and the seasons of life progress.

The acoustic performance seen above was very peaceful and relaxing to hear. Great use of the SMILE face masks on her band mates in the background by the way! Katy is going to be a great mom and I know down the line when her daughter hears this song for the first time, she too will smile and be appreciative of how her mom made a name for herself in life and is so strong through the ups and downs as a singer in the spotlight.

I commend the career Perry has established so far and I’m looking forward to the new era of songs she has in store with SMILE. You can still pre-order the album now!

In other news this week, you can expect Perry back at the judges table next season on American Idol alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan with returning host Ryan Seacrest.

“Baby It’s You” by London Grammar

English indie pop band, London Grammar is back with their first new single since their 2017 album, Truth Is A Beautiful Thing. “Baby It’s You” is a soothing song about love. This single is perfect for those who found their match in life and want to dedicate it to their lover. No matter what the world is like, you at least have this special person in your life. Of course if you’re single, you can perhaps feel the same towards your family, a friend or even your pet(s).

I like the visualizer seen above because even though the skies look dark, the proverbial fire (that special someone) in the water will be the only thing that warms your heart and soul. For a strange year we’ve been having in real life, I found comfort in listening to this song and I hope the feeling is mutual for all of you out there.

I’m excited to hear what’s next for them, whether it will be more singles down the line, an EP, or even a third studio album which the LG fans most certainly would love to have.

“Brick By Brick” by American Authors

For my fourth pick this week, it’s alternative rock band, American Authors with their new single, “Brick By Brick.” After listening to the song, you can’t help but feel inspired and motivated to conquer the things in life that you originally thought was impossible. If there’s something in life you want to achieve, you have to keep going one step at a time because if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything! Erase your doubts, keep laying down the proverbial bricks and soon enough you’ll go from laying down the foundation to having the whole building complete for the whole world to see! Dream big!

The band will be releasing a new EP called Counting Down with five new tracks including this one on September 18th. Pre-save on Spotify is available now.

“Bad To Myself” by Greyson Chance

23-year-old singer-songwriter Greyson Chance is done being bad to himself as he enters a new, brighter chapter in his life! This is such a heartfelt, vulnerable song about him reaching a low point in his personal life (struggling with anorexia, alcohol drinking and experiencing a breakup) and ultimately looking at himself in the mirror thinking, no, he’s got to turn over a new leaf and be gentler to himself. Self care is important and that’s evident with the positive mindset he’s showcasing lately through his social media channels.

“Bad To Myself” follows the releases of “Honeysuckle,” and “Dancing Next To Me” earlier this year. It’s expected that more songs will be dropped later this fall and early next year, so look forward to that as Chance continues to hone his craft.

I appreciate Chance opening up and expressing himself through his songs, and this one in particular is a sign of many more amazing accomplishments to come.

New Music Friday: July 31

Happy New Music Friday on this 31st day of July! It’s hard to believe that July is almost done but we’ve got one more round of picks this month before we dive right into the dog days of summer in August soon! Multi-Platinum selling artist and Grammy winner, Billie Eilish dropped her latest single, alt-pop band Glass Animals released another new track from their upcoming Dreamland album, rising pop star Ava Max shares her new revenge song, Brit-pop band The Vamps are shining in this new joyful music comeback and finally we end with a new song from alternative rock band, The Neighbourhood that beckons some deep thought and hopefully something bright to add to your playlists this week. Scroll on down to read all the deets!

“my future” by Billie Eilish

5x Grammy-winning artist, Billie Eilish follows her epic James Bond theme song, “No Time To Die” with a brand new single called “my future.” This song will presumably be a part of her sophomore album effort slated to be released sometime in 2021. Eilish begins the song in her usual melancholic style reflecting upon her past but by the mid portion of the song, it starts to turn brighter and optimistic towards the future.

Kudos to the animators who made this beautiful music video. They really captured the essence of Eilish excellently all throughout. It kind of gives off this Japanese anime vibe or even a Hiyao Miyazaki vibe in my opinion (see: My Neighbor Totoro (1988)). Thoughts?

By the latter part of the video, the animators showcase new life and sunshine wrapping around the landscape and cartoon version of Eilish as beanstalk vines carry her up high in the sky. Symbolically, it represents all the creative things artists like Eilish are doing right now in quarantine. Tough times and darkness leads to growth, renewal, hope and resilience. Brighter days are certainly in our futures!

Eilish and her big brother/writer/producer, Finneas created this contemplative song in the early stages of quarantine life back in spring. It was conceived in a pretty rapid fashion as this was made when the two were in Finneas’ apartment on an actual rainy day as she revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music.

Finneas, whom turned 23-years-old this week, posted on his Instagram about the new song citing, “the first thing we made during quarantine was “my future”. I will forever cherish the rainy days I spent making this song with my sister.”

He added, “it’s been a scary year for so many reasons but I choose to be optimistic and so many of you make me feel so inspired about the future.”

Hopefully this song does the same for you just as much as it did for him. Feel free to add it to your quarantine playlists this week.

“It’s All So Incredibly Loud” by Glass Animals

Glass Animals follows the release of their song “Heat Waves” which has charted as high as #12 on the Billboard Hot Alternative Songs chart with another song off their upcoming album, Dreamland called “It’s All So Incredibly Loud.”

The alternative band is set to drop Dreamland next week on August 7th. With “It’s All So Incredibly Loud,” the song slowly builds up (a full minute) to this chilling and cathartic anthem about a couple in a relationship that winds up in an heated argument. Fiery words get traded in the heat of the moment and whether you like it or not, it’s officially out there. An inevitable breakup or temporary time apart from one another likely ensues.

The aftermath moment is where silence is most deafening to both parties. If you’ve experienced that in life, then this song is for you!

Overall, lead singer Dave Bayley has made an impressive song here. The music video was excellently executed. It looks simple yet sophisticated in the sense that it symbolically captures the theme of the lyrics all at once. By 2:47, you’ll get goosebumps watching the slo-mo dive by Bayley!

I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the record real soon.

“Who’s Laughing Now” by Ava Max

Pop singer-songwriter Ava Max has a new song for those who want to show their strong, independent side after a breakup. “Who’s Laughing Now” takes a jab at one’s ex. The infectious whistling and the “ha ha ha ha’s” in this song makes for a spicy track. It will make you dance along to the beat of the song, for sure.

The plot of the above video showcases Ava Max getting laid off by her boss who asserted his “dominance” when in fact Max is portrayed as being the dominant one. Karma is real! Shrugging off the pink slip, she dances along in this fun choreographed routine with sheer confidence.

In the latter half of the video, Max seeks revenge on the man she once dated who was caught kissing another woman. Using a crowbar to damage his car was a cathartic moment to watch.

The other major plot point is Max being placed in confinement in a straitjacket for the actions she committed earlier as the doctor deems her “psycho and crazy.” She eventually uses her wits and powers to break free.

This song pairs well with Max’s previous smash hit single, “Sweet But Psycho.” Both of those songs along with 13 other tracks will be on her first full length album, Heaven & Hell releasing September 18th!

A lot to unravel but overall, this is a solid Ava Max song to add to your playlists this week.

“Married In Vegas” by The Vamps

Brit pop-rock band, The Vamps are making a comeback! “Married In Vegas” is the first single off their upcoming fourth studio album, Cherry Blossom. The band posted on their Twitter that this new era signifies rebirth and that it was a two-year process in the making.

They hope this song will inspire fans to propose to their girlfriend/boyfriend and having a spur of the moment wedding in the iconic city of Las Vegas. Nonetheless, this uptempo song will have you jamming along. If you need a good pick me up this week, this is a song you should listen to! Also if you’re fans of One Direction or 5 Seconds of Summer for example and you have yet to hear a song from The Vamps, then you should definitely give them a listen.

I look forward to their evolved sound in their upcoming record. How about you? In the meantime, check out this fun interview they did for Hunger TV.

“Cherry Flavoured” by The Neighbourhood

Need a mellow yet moody ’80s sounding track? Then this one’s for you! It’s the latest single from alternative rock band, The Neighbourhood. This is the first single (out now) off their upcoming fourth studio album titled Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones which is slated for release on September 25th. It’s also the first new song of 2020 for the band since their 2019 Death Stranding soundtrack song, “Yellow Box.”

I thought it was neat that they had a nostalgic Nickelodeon inspired splat logo in the lower right-hand corner of the music video which was done in animation. This song is great if you’re feeling down and need a little comfort to get your spirits up.

I’m looking forward to learning more about these alter-egos for the band members, Jesse Rutherford as Chip Chrome & Jeremy Freedman, Zach Abels, Mikey Margott & Brandon Alexander Fried as The Mono-Tones. I’m also wondering how their new album will sound like. What do you guys think/predict?

That does it for this week’s edition of New Music Friday! Leave a comment below letting me know what song(s) you’re jamming to this week and why. ‘Til next time, stay safe and happy listening!

New Music Friday: July 3

We’ve got the latest tunes from Grammy-nominated singer Ellie Goulding feat. Lauv plus alternative artists LANY, Glass Animals, lovelytheband & HONNE in this week’s edition of New Music Friday for July 3, 2020.

“Slow Grenade” by Ellie Goulding & Lauv

English singer-songwriter, Ellie Goulding with previous hits like “Love Me Like You Do” and “Burn” has teamed up with rising pop star Lauv for the first time in this song titled, “Slow Grenade.”

It’s a song about a relationship that’s really complicated. One minute this couple is at odds with another, the next, they can’t bear with the fact of being alone and losing one another.

Overall, I really like how the two artists’ voices respectively mesh together in this song. Expect this song to be added to radio stations across the country.

Download/stream the new collab effort, right here. The song will be part of the B-sides on Goulding’s upcoming fourth album, Brightest Blue which drops July 17th! You can get special Ellie Goulding bundle packs right here in her online shop.

“If This Is The Last Time” by LANY

OK…this song will really hit you in the feels. LANY, the L.A. indie pop band has released a new song that’s all about cherishing life and the precious moments you have on Earth with your family. If you haven’t talked, or visited your parents in a long time, chances are they miss you and you should definitely seize the opportunity to speak to them while time is your side and while you have them in your life. Life is short, and with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc on the country as we speak, the band wanted to finish and produce this heartfelt tune so that listeners can have something to lean on.

Lead vocalist Paul Jason Klein posted on his IG story recently discussing further about the track:

Klein revealed the track was first conceived on a flight to Beijing, China last summer and that it’s all about wondering what if the next time you saw someone you love, it was the last time you saw that someone.

Overall, this track is a must hear! It’s a feel good, sentimental track that will have you swaying those hands, and moving your phone’s flashlight from side to side. Please savor life’s moments while you can because life can really accelerate before you know it! Download LANY’s new single today!

“Heat Waves” by Glass Animals

English indie pop-electronic band, Glass Animals dropped their latest single called “Heat Waves.” This follows the whimsical single, “Dreamland” the leading track of their upcoming album of the same name.

This song according to lead singer Dave Bayley is all about being okay with being vulnerable. He posted in a recent tweet that “it’s all about realizing that you can’t make everyone happy” as well as “realizing it’s ok to be defeated by something.”

While it’s easy to hide yourself when called out by others in other forms like in video games or TV shows, the band wants you to realize that “being vulnerable should be a positive thing” not negative!

The music video has Bayley walking around the neighborhood with old fashioned TVs in order to get to this auditorium where he performs the song while his band mates are playing on the screens from their respective residences. Quarantine life really has made the production process super creative for artists nowadays and this applies to them too! Props all around on the concept of this vid! It’s rare to see empty streets and a band making a music video outside your window! 😉

The new release date for their upcoming album, Dreamland will be August 7th! In the meantime, download “Heat Waves,” right here.

“idwgtyp” by lovelytheband

lovelytheband announced that their next album (their second) titled conversations with myself about you will be releasing August 28th. This latest single is about a broken relationship. The frustrations in having person A in the relationship make considerable efforts to get person B to change their ways without success in an effort to continue their life together is high.

Sonically the track itself is an uptempo, catchy, shout out from your lungs type of song especially the chorus section. Lyrically speaking, it makes you empathize with this person who’s stuck in a loveless relationship.

Download/stream “idwgtyp” right here. Visit their official site here for the latest updates and to sign up for their mailing list.

“la la la that’s how it goes” by HONNE

Electronic duo HONNE has released a cute animated video for this single titled, “la la la that’s how it goes.” The song itself is all about sticking up with one’s other half. Through thick and thin, the two subjects are united. This is a nice contrast with the Ellie Goulding song seen earlier above and is why I wanted to end on a positive note this week with this song.

I don’t know about you but personally, I get Adventure Time vibes with the animation in this lyric video. So if you need a serotonin boost this week, then look no further and download this track off their new mixtape, no song without you, right here.

If you like to check out animator, Holly Warburton’s work, click here. And lastly stay connected to the official HONNE website here.

That’s all for this week’s edition of New Music Friday! Hope you have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend! Comment below which songs are your faves this week. As always, please continue to support the BLM movement by checking out this comprehensive list of resources of ways to help:

New Music Friday: June 26

Grammy-winning artist, Usher, multi-platinum recording artist Charlie Puth, fan-favorite rising indie-pop artist Lauv, teen sensation Kenzie, and politically outspoken country band The Chicks are bringing their latest releases respectively for this edition of New Music Friday, June 26, 2020!

“I Cry” by Usher

8x Grammy-winner, Usher released a heartfelt new tune called “I Cry” this week that’s sadly relevant to our current times. With the unjust killings of Black Americans via unethical and aggressive tactics by the police force across the country, the R&B hitmaker wanted to contribute a piece of art for the world to hear.

With melancholic lyrics like, “I can’t keep it together. I usually don’t show my emotions. But it ain’t getting better. ‘Cause you can’t be blind with eyes wide open” in the first verse and the pre-chorus and chorus respectively with “And I see struggle, I see pain. I see only the mess we made. I see things that I can’t change. And it hurts my heart to say–”

“I cry — for the sons without fathers. And the pain that their mothers hold deep inside. And I’ll fight for the future we’re making. We can change if we face it. ‘Cause these tears won’t dry. So I cry,” you can’t help but feel the raw emotions he as an artist has felt and witnessed just like we all did over the past month especially after the unjust murder of George Floyd in Minnesota. An integral person of their family, gone too soon. The unfathomable pain and sorrow that they had to go through is just too much. These lyrics really make you think and empathize with the family members of the victims as well as inspire action for change.

Usher really made a beautiful song that doesn’t need a lot of embellishments, or fancy bells and whistles. It’s a clear cut, cathartic song that’s topical to moments of instability such as the one we’re living in right now. Remember, it’s okay to feel the feels after hearing the song especially if you’re a guy. No one will blame you if you cry after hearing his song. In fact, Usher wanted his own sons to be okay with showing their emotions.

Check out his latest tweet which sums up what he has felt during this pandemic on top of the effects of police brutality which was the catalyst in making and completing this single:

Proceeds of the song will be going to which supports the Global Goal “Unite For Our Future” campaign. Click here to donate to this cause. Download/stream the song, right here.

“Girlfriend” by Charlie Puth

Charlie Puth, the 4x Grammy-nominated artist with smash hits like “See You Again,” “One Call Away,” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” is back with his first single of 2020 in “Girlfriend.” This track is all about Puth professing his desires to take the next step in securing a girlfriend and being a loving and open-eared gentleman in the relationship.

This song is easy on the ears and if you loved any of his previous catchy singles, you’ll love this new song too! Add this to the list of potential song of the summer candidates for 2020!

In a recent tweet, Puth stated this song was made while out on tour whether it be on the plane or on the bus. He used an SM7 microphone for those who want to learn some technical behind-the-scenes details and co-wrote it with Kash a.k.a. Jacob Kasher who is responsible for writing “Attention” and “How Long” just to name a few.

Hopefully, this is the real beginning of his third album cycle since he previously scrapped a CP3 effort earlier this spring.

Hear the new song, right here. As a bonus, check out Charlie in the new Subway ads which promote the return of the $5 footlong!

“Love Somebody” by Lauv

25-year-old singer-songwriter Lauv has followed his debut album, ~how i’m feeling~ released earlier this year with a brand new EP containing four new tracks, one of which is this song, “Love Somebody.”

This song is about the regrets Lauv has made in his choices in life most notably in past relationships. “Started off as a good thing, a sure thing. What the hell did I do?” he questions in the first verse. In the chorus, he passionately sings:

Every time I think I love somebody
Always find a way to throw it all away
I don’t ever wanna hurt nobody
I don’t wanna be the one to say
That we gotta have a conversation
I don’t wanna watch the tears roll down your face
No, I hurt you and I, I’m sorry
All I wanted was to love somebody.

After hearing this song in its entirety, it really makes you feel for him. This track overall will be resonant to many listeners out there who are fighting their inner thoughts and feelings constantly when navigating a relationship.

Download/stream Lauv’s new EP, Without You now! These songs were made during this quarantine and it includes a demo version of “Miss Me” which originally was released on his SoundCloud page back in April.

“EXHALE” by kenzie feat. Sia

16-year-old Kenzie Ziegler has teamed up with Sia once again for her new single, “EXHALE.” This uptempo song is all about not giving up. When times are tough, sometimes you just need to literally take a deep breath and exhale because stress and anxiety is not good for our mental health and well being. Keep the positive spirits up and maintain confidence in whatever you pursue in life is the message of the song as Sia sings, “Don’t stop, keep it goin’. Lights on, lights off, I’m still glowin’. Confidence I’m overflowin’. Voices tell me, “Keep your focus.” 😎

The music video, while not to professional standards a.k.a. being shot on a set, is still a well crafted and edited piece. It was filmed on an iPhone by her big sister Maddie Ziegler, who worked with Sia earlier this year in “Together.” It has a lot of fun improvised choreography that will cater to the TikTok crowd for sure. It also features some of Kenzie’s best friends: Dove Cameron, Johnny Orlando, Emily Skinner, Sage Rosen, Abbi Dicenso, Dylan Conrique, Tati McQuay, Cameron Field, Charlize Glass, Gio Pilla, Hayden Summerall and Lucas Stadvec. They too submitted their dances for this feel-good video.

If you want a good chill song to add to your playlists this week then look no further and download “EXHALE” today! Get exclusive “EXHALE” merch, right here.

“March March” by The Chicks

The Chicks formerly known as award-winning country trio The Dixie Chicks have released another track from their upcoming eighth studio album, Gaslighter. Yesterday they announced they are now going to be known as The Chicks because ‘dixie’ is a word that connotes slavery and the Confederate South. Given the current times we’re living in, they didn’t want to shed light on that dark moment in history anymore.

The music video starts off with a powerful quote, “If your voice held no power, they wouldn’t try to silence you.” It also shows some of the peaceful protests and marches both past and present fighting for various issues like racial justice, equality, gun reform, and climate change just to name a few. The names of the fellow Black men and women who died at the hands of the police like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor are solemnly displayed as well.

It’s very surreal and sad how history tends to repeat itself. But one thing that hasn’t folded is the power of speaking out. Included in the description of the above video are website links to various movements and organizations like Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood, Headcount, and the Innocence Project just to name a few. Check those out after you watch the video to learn more.

You can get the latest single from The Chicks, right here.

Thanks for reading another edition of New Music Friday! With the Black Lives Matter movement still in full force, I wanted to direct your attention to helping the family of Elijah McClain fight for justice. McClain was yet another innocent Black soul who lost his life at the hands of police brutality while walking home. He was only 23-years-old. Click on the tweet below to learn more.
