New Music Friday: December 11

Greetings! It’s December 11, 2020 which means it’s Friday once again! This week we have an assortment of new songs to check out. There’s all new music from pop stars Taylor Swift, and Gwen Stefani, indie pop band Foster The People, Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson & actress and pop recording artist Victoria Justice. All that and more in this week’s post.

“willow” by Taylor Swift

Pop superstar Taylor Swift surprised the Swifties yesterday with the announcement of her ninth studio album, evermore. It will be known as the sister album to the #1 Platinum-selling album, folklore which was released back in July. This time, another 15 new songs (+2 bonus songs on the deluxe edition) are heading your way!

Swift wanted to surprise us with new music since she’s turning 31 in two days. 31 is backwards for 13 which is her favorite lucky number. Whenever something significant comes up numerology speaking, you know she wants to do something special for her fans. She also wanted to provide some additional comfort given the challenging year it’s been thus far. Music is truly the connection we all need during a pandemic!

In “willow,” the first single off the new record, Swift picks off where the “cardigan” music video left off. She re-enters the fantasy world deep inside the piano again, following a shiny sparkly golden string. The National’s Aaron Dessner returned to produce the single as well as helped co-write the song.

Directed by Swift too, the 30-year-old singer revealed that this song, “is about intrigue, desire, and the complexity that goes into wanting someone. I think it sounds like casting a spell to make somebody fall in love with you (an oddly specific visual).”

Dancer Taeok Lee joins the video as Swift’s co-star. “You’ve seen my co-star in this video somewhere before.” Do you guys know? In case you didn’t, he’s one of her tour dancers! Read more about him, here.

Swift also shared that “One scene represents how I feel about fame. There’s a scene to represent each season throughout the journey of the video.” Her imagination and vision in her music videos are truly limitless. 👏👏

Overall, I really enjoy this well thought out music video which was shot safely under COVID-19 protocols, as well as the cool scenery and effects featured all throughout. We really don’t deserve her to be honest! She’s making the Swifties feel warm and toasty this winter, that’s for sure!

She’s such a master at crafting her music from start to finish and it definitely shows again. Expect more awards and accolades in 2021 for this phenomenal piece of art!

Be sure to check out the rest of the album which has collabs from Bon Iver and The National again plus one from the hit sister trio HAIM too! Take a look at her letter on the release of the album here:

“Let Me Reintroduce Myself” by Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani, singer-songwriter and coach on the hit NBC singing competition show, The Voice, is back to her pop roots since four years ago with this new track. Released earlier this week, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” is her way of saying she never really left. This isn’t a comeback! She sings that she’s still the “original old me,” mentioning that she’s not your dusty old records on your shelf while also referencing her famous spelled out lyric, “bananas” from her 2004 smash hit, “Hollaback Girl.” She’s here to provide a little joy in 2020.

The song is really fun and catchy to listen to just like all of her previous hits if I do say so myself. It reminds me a little bit of those No Doubt/Rock Steady days too. Do you agree? The 51-year-old singer debuted the song earlier this week on The Voice. Check out this clip of her performance and her fiancé, Black Shelton praising her new song.

Stefani still has that youthful look to her compared to 20 years ago and fans of hers will definitely dig the new track, the first of many more to come in the new year I hope. “LMRM” will be a part of her fifth solo studio album effort, whenever that comes to fruition.

“Cadillac” by Foster The People

Mark Foster and the guys of Foster The People are back with a six-track EP titled, In The Darkest Of Nights, Let The Birds Sing. All of the songs are worthy of your listen but “Cadillac” in particular is my new current fave. It has a different groove compared to their last promotional single, “Under The Moon.”

It’s safe to say this song is a nod to his newlywed wife and star of Netflix’s Ozark, Julia Garner. “Cadillac” is for all those people out there who have a significant other that they want to drive around with. They’re your soulmate for life and you want them to feel special. Foster sings, “Come with me, my queen/I wanna go with you еverywhere to lift your crown higher/You’ll always be my queen/I wanna go with you everywhere and lift your crown.” Such an empowering and sweet lyric!

Sonically, it’s an uptempo song filled with well executed layers. I especially love how Foster incorporates his vocal range — the low and high ends work well in their respective parts. The outro of the song is nothing I have ever heard from anyone else. Very unique and fresh overall!

Check out the colorful visualizer for some cool driving into the sunset vibes!

Be sure to check out the rest of the new EP which includes their previous releases “Under The Moon,” “The Things We Do,” & “Lamb’s Wool.”

You can pre-order exclusive vinyl version of the EP, here.

“Christmas Dreaming” by Cody Simpson

Get in the Christmas spirit early with Cody Simpson‘s version of Frank Sinatra’s classic 1957 holiday song, “Christmas Dreaming.” This is a lovely track to play by the fireplace with your Christmas tree lit up in the living room.

Simpson’s slow and soft baritone vocals would make the late great Sinatra proud! A very classy track from the 23-year-old Australian singer. He did this song justice in my opinion. I love the single artwork for that old-timey classic look. There’s no need for any crazy embellishments on the song, just an acoustic guitar strumming alongside his voice. It has a modern sound that even Gen-Z listeners will love and enjoy! Do you guys agree?

If you need a new holiday song to put on your playlists this month, feel free to add Simpson’s today!

“Treat Myself” by Victoria Justice

Actress Victoria Justice returns to the music scene. It’s her first new song in seven years and this time Justice is taking the steps in recording her first full length album (tentatively to be released next year).

She posted on her socials the importance of making this song:

This song is for those listeners out there who’ve been harsh critics of themselves. But the catch is, you’re taking the steps at turning over a new leaf. You want to refocus your personal or professional goals in life by letting go of that bad energy you once possessed. Hopefully this song will help you on your personal journey and as we approach the new year with new opportunities, may it help you get some much needed clarity and a boost to your self-esteem.

If you like artists like Julia Michaels or Selena Gomez, you’ll enjoy Justice’s latest tune. I feel like her voice has matured so much since her Victorious days and I’m really looking forward to hearing more songs in the coming months. How about you?

New Music Friday: December 4

We’ve made it to the final month of 2020! Chill out with the following new tunes out this week! Pop boy band Why Don’t We, Grammy-winning artist/producer FINNEAS, EDM hitmakers Cheat Codes ft. Marc E. Bassy, pop duo Aly & AJ & Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna are my recommended picks for you to check out. Read all about them and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner for December 4, 2020.

“Lotus Inn” by Why Don’t We

Successful quintet boy band, Why Don’t We have released their next single off their forthcoming second studio album, The Good Times and The Bad Ones due in January 2021. It’s called “Lotus Inn,” and I strongly believe this will definitely be their next hit song which follows “Fallin’ (Adrenaline)” released earlier this fall.

From my interpretation, the song talks about catching eyes with somebody attractive and this budding relationship takes off like fireworks exploding in the sky as your newfound love takes your hand so you two can spend the night together at the “lotus inn.” I’ll leave the rest for you own take(s). The seemingly instant love connection that takes place is something to behold. You feel like you’re on cloud nine and want to re-live the heart thumping moment again and again!

Fans of WDW got an early invitational postcard late last month to visit the cozy looking lotus inn (clever marketing, Warner Music Group!). The actual website looks like a legit place to make a reservation too. Click here to see for yourself! It even has the date December 4th (TODAY) on the calendar. It will lead to their merch site if you do click on it, letting fans know that “all of the rooms are booked.” Also, do check out the Lotus Inn IG page for some cool interior shots and much more!

Overall, I believe teens and young adults will adore this upbeat love song from the guys! It will have you dancing along and swaying your hands to the beat of the song. Many will even have tears of joy as well for a multitude reasons like the sheer pride you have in the WDW fandom and the craftmanship the band has taken on in this era.

I can already tell this track will be a fan favorite when the band resumes touring duties in 2021 and it will sound amazing in an arena like setting.

“Another Year” by FINNEAS

FINNEAS offers his holiday song to the world and it doesn’t disappoint! This piano ballad/love song was beautifully written and produced. He talks about not needing Baby Jesus to save him, or a New Year’s resolution to change him. He doesn’t even need presents! The most important thing is spending time with your loved ones or your one true love this holiday season and beyond!

This is a song you need to have on your playlist if you just need something playing while reading a book in the living room with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa. This song has the power that matches a much needed big hug or like a well-deserved massage. It will provide a lot of comforting feelings as we close out what’s been an unprecedented 2020.

What’s funny is that the 23-year-old singer-songwriter/producer penned this track last year around this same time. He didn’t knew the lyrics would be so poetic for a crazy time like this. He posted on his Instagram, “I wrote this song this time last year but if I had known what would happen in the following 12 months, I wouldn’t have changed a line. Hope it gives you a little comfort.”

Good thing he didn’t change anything because the verses of this song are absolutely perfect!

So if you’re looking for a new holiday song to add to your collection that’s soothing to the ears, look no further to FINNEAS’ “Another Year.”

“Do It All Over” by Cheat Codes feat. Marc E. Bassy

EDM trio Cheat Codes have teamed up with San Fran native singer-songwriter Marc E. Bassy for an infectious new anthem about wanting to start over again. That’s what most would say when it comes to this year! Am I right?

The conflicting emotions and cycles of love and heartbreak can take a toll on you so this track will be relevant to those listeners out there who want that re-do in life when it comes to your love life. It can also apply to other aspects of life too, like say a job that you lost. You want and plead for that second chance. Perhaps it will end in the same result, but that doesn’t stop you from trying!

Sonically speaking, I love the arrangement of the beats with Bassy’s solid vocal performance. I especially love the added synths. It’s very addictive and definitely deserves to be played over and over again. This is an A+ collaboration!

This song will be a part of Cheat Codes’ upcoming debut studio album, Hellraisers due to be released next year. Expect more amazing collaborations and teaser songs to be dropped before then.

“Slow Dancing” by Aly & AJ

Vibe out with Aly & AJ’s latest single, “Slow Dancing.” This is such a mellow track that will leave you feeling refreshed after listening to it. The sister duo crafted a lovely soft pop song. Clear skin is just a click away!

Lyrically, it talks about missing someone you know and love because they’re living far away from you due to various reasons (e.g a long distance relationship, COVID-19 distancing from a family member/relative/friend, or your lover is on a long business trip).

The ladies indirectly mention quarantine life of 2020 and the political divisions in the U.S. we’re currently experiencing in the lines, “Hell’s bending, keeping me captive,” and “I’ve got my reasons to complain/And they’re tangled in red, white, and blue/The battlе outside is blazing/And all I’m thinking about is you” respectively.

In my opinion, this song is like Fleetwood Mac mixed in with the current sound of Vanessa Carlton alongside with some HAIM essence too. What do you guys think?

I feel like this song can literally be used in teen dramas with a literal “slow dancing” scene or a school prom scene for a high-school based series.

If you need to feel the feels or de-stress your troubles away, then this is your pick of the week! This song is slated to be a part of their fourth studio album. A release date has yet to be announced. I’m stoked to hear more from them in the near future!

“Dance Like Nobody’s Watching” by Yuna

Capping off this week’s picks is Yuna’s groovy new song called, “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching.” Forget sadness and heartbreak because music is the remedy for all of that. Literally, Yuna wants you to immerse yourself with your favorite song(s) including this one. Life is short too be upset about lost love.

Dance the night away as the 34-year-old singer-songwriter belts out gracefully these notable lines from the lyrics, “Dance like nobody’s watching (Oh, oh, oh)/’Cause you won’t be the one to save me (Yeah, yeah)” and in the post-chorus, “Gonna take my shoes off and be free (Ooh)/No one to tell me how to feel (Ooh)/I got a solution baby (Ooh). Dance like nobody’s watching.”

This song exudes confidence in moving on and being a strong independent person overall. This is a great track for future club playlists but for now it will have to settle for those “party for one in my own house/apartment” kind of playlists.

Sonically speaking, Yuna’s vocals are delicate like a dove’s feather. Very calming to the ears, breathy, and matches well with the tempo of the song. It’s not too slow nor too fast. Just right!

New Music Friday: November 13

No bad mojo or superstitious vibes in any of these selections on this Friday the 13th! This week we have brand new tunes from alternative pop singer Billie Eilish, indie rock band Foster The People, Australian recording artist Tones And I, EDM artist Joe Stone & pop singer Ally Brooke, and last but not least alternative folk band, Judah & the Lion. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner…

“Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish

Grammy winning artist, Billie Eilish is back with another new single from her upcoming second studio album! It’s called “Therefore I Am” and from my interpretation it’s the 18-year-old singer-songwriter calling out her haters, her fake fans/friends who use her name to get things they want in life like fame. She’s letting you all know that she isn’t your doormat to step on, so please step aside!

The music video is a free-spirited run through an empty mall, the Glendale Galleria in California to be more precise. Watching this video unfold was fun and entertaining. Eilish got to roam free without anyone chasing after her (until the end of course — haha!). Let the chaotic behavior begin!

First up, she got access to the Wetzel’s Pretzels which strangely had no staff working at the counter/register. She “stole” a pretzel from them and carried on without any care.

Then she took a quick elevator trip down to “steal” a doughnut from another kiosk. Running parallel to the lyrics from the pre-chorus/chorus seen below:

Did you have fun?
I really couldn’t care less
And you can give ’em my best, but just know

I’m not your friend or anything
Damn, you think that you’re the man
I think, therefore, I am
I’m not your friend or anything
Damn, you think that you’re the man
I think, therefore, I am

…you can tell Eilish really doesn’t care what people say about her yet she’s still having a blast and having a good time by herself as she grabs more food, a drink at a hot dog joint then some Chipotle chips then back to the hot dog place for some fries and of course a hot dog. I was like, “She’s going to run out of hands at this rate to hold all the “free munchies!””

But morality sinks in and a security guard is heard screaming in the background to tell her to get out of the mall. In reality, Eilish most likely got permission to shoot this iPhone style video with a small crew and paid her dues for those snacks and gave a lot of publicity for the mall itself for her appearance inside there!

Overall, this is one of the most peppiest songs of hers in my opinion out of the two previous singles that dropped for this new era, post-When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.

See “my future” for a more emotional and reflective Billie and “No Time To Die” for her orchestral James Bond anthem for the next Bond film of the same name which is slated for release in theaters next April.

The music video makes me miss the normalcy of being in a mall. It’s rather jarring to see an empty mall in 2020 and I hope 2021 will be brighter for the mall culture scene once this pandemic is over with.

“Under The Moon” by Foster The People

Whenever a new Foster The People song comes out, it feels like Christmas morning to me! With this latest single, “Under The Moon,” also comes the announcement of their forthcoming EP, In The Darkest of Nights, Let the Birds Sing which is slated for release on December 11th!

In the music video, lead singer Mark Foster is donning an all black outfit next to a black convertible as he sings in both low and high ranges. The song talks about a long distance relationship from my understanding. This song is for those who miss their better half. They could either be in an different state, country, time zone, what have you, for various reasons but the love they share can be equated to seeing the same moon under the night sky!

The lyrics to the song are poetic and the song from a production standpoint is nicely done with a lot of cool layers mixed in with Foster’s distinctive vocals. I enjoyed hearing the guitar chords mixed with the drums. It’s so soothing to the ears. Later in the song, it twists in sound. You really have to hear it for yourself to see how it evolves! That’s around the 3:20 mark.

Overall, it’s an all around feel-good track from the indie rock band that brought out hits like the fan favorite, “Pumped Up Kicks” which launched their success back in 2011 to more recent singles “Imagination,” “Pick U Up,” & “The Things We Do.”

I’m so excited to hear more from their upcoming EP next month. The aforementioned “The Things We Do,” plus “Lamb’s Wool” have been confirmed to be a part of the new EP’s track list. Let me know what your thoughts are about this song, feel free to comment below.

“Fly Away” by Tones And I

Australian pop singer, Tones And I penned a new uptempo song that will have you dancing on your feet. This follows the previous single, “Ur So F**king Cool,” as well as her breakout hit last year “Dance Monkey” which has been certified multi-Platinum by the RIAA.

The lyrics to this new song delve into someone who just wants to break free from the status quo or someone who wants to go against the social norms that they grew up hearing or following, and just do whatever it is in life that they want to pursue.

This is a great song for those who are unsure or previously unsure what they want to accomplish in life or for those who have a fear of failure but are now ready to try again. You can get some confidence back in life after hearing a song like this one.

Take this for example, you just graduated from high school or college and have now entered the next chapter in life — adulthood! You want to spread your proverbial wings and fly away. Whether that’s moving away from your childhood home to live in your own apartment or getting married and starting your own family in a new home, there’s simply no two paths alike for everyone to take. Personal and professional choices vary greatly! We’re all unique human beings on this Earth, so embrace the beauty of life and do what makes YOU happy!

I love the message and theme of this song that Tones And I (real name: Toni Watson) created here and I think it will resonate with EDM, alternative, indie and pop fans alike. So go check out this single today!

“Feeling Dynamite” by Joe Stone & Ally Brooke

The motivation train picks up steam with this pick called “Feeling Dynamite” by Spinnin’ Records artist, Joe Stone who collaborated with none other than pop singer-songwriter, Ally Brooke.

This is a high energy, positive, and uplifting anthem celebrating that blissful feeling when you’re feeling at your best either physically, emotionally, mentally, psychologically or all of the above.

Stone and Brooke produced and programmed the song together exceptionally well. The beats flow seamlessly alongside Brooke’s powerful vocals. The lyric video seen above has big bolded font set to a cosmic background that will enhance your “I’m on top of the world!” feelings. I applaud Brooke for expanding her reach into the world of EDM music.

Feel free to put this song on your gym/workout playlists this week and your party jams playlists too! Enjoy!

“Spirit” by Judah & the Lion

Alternative folk rock band Judah & the Lion released an inspirational new song for us to hear. The band posted on their Twitter page tweeting, “2020 has been painful, but true beauty comes through pain. We hope this song encourages all of us to never give up on each other and never give up on life. Sing with us!”

And rightfully so, I truly think this is a feel good anthem that will inspire us all, that will help us feel unified as a country and that will ease our worries because unity is stronger than division!

You can really feel the impact of lead singer Judah Akers’ voice especially when he sings “We got spirit and I know you hear it/There’s no give up, give up, give up/Give up, give up, give up, give up, give up, in us.” For some reason, he kind of has a similar vocal stylings of American Authors’ front man, Zac Barnett.

I strongly believe if you love Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver or NEEDTOBREATHE, you’ll enjoy Judah & the Lion’s songs including this latest track.

It remains to be seen if this song or their previous song release, “Beautiful Anyway” will be a part of their next album or EP effort. But I have a hunch it could. Feel free to share your predictions below.

New Music Friday: October 30

Happy Halloween weekend everyone! No tricks up my sleeves, only treats! 😉 I’ve got FIVE brand new song picks for you to check out and they’re from pop star Dua Lipa & Belgian singer Angèle, pop band Jonas Brothers, EDM duo The Knocks featuring alternative band Foster The People, rock band Against The Current & French DJ Petit Biscuit. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post for October 30, 2020…

“Fever” by Dua Lipa & Angèle

Pop singer-songwriter Dua Lipa follows the release of her Club Future Nostalgia remix album with a brand new single/collaboration in “Fever.” She teamed up with Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle for a sweltering collaboration.

The song deals with someone madly in love. You’ve fallen head over heels for this person and you can compare it to having a literal fever. It’s that special feeling you get when you lay eyes with somebody attractive. Heartbeats increase. Warm fuzzy feelings. Love galore! XOXOX.

Lipa and Angèle take turns with their amazing vocals expressing the hot sentiments. In the chorus after Lipa sings, “I’vе got a fever, so can you check?/Hand on my forehead, kiss my neck/And when you touch me, baby, I turn red/I’ve got a fever, so can you check?, Angèle expresses fluently, “Car dans mes yeux, ça se voit/La fièvre dans les yeux, oui, ça se voit/Mon cœur se serre, j’ai du feu dans la voix/Le plus souvent, c’est quand je pense à toi” which translates to “Maybe with time it will go away/And yet, and yet, and yet, I can’t see myself/Like a medicine, I am nothing without you/And I know that, I know that I’m wasting time in your arms.”

Hearing the French verses really adds to the potency of the song’s lyrics. I commend them for including them. It wouldn’t have that oomph to it if it was all in English.

Feel free to add this amazing new track if you’re a big fan of love songs, Dua Lipa, and Angèle. It will be appropriate for those fans/listeners out there who have found the love of their life, for Valentine’s Day, for date nights/ or for those feel-good playlists.

“I Need You Christmas” by Jonas Brothers

The Jonas Brothers are ushering in the Christmas/holiday season early this year with their latest tune, “I Need You Christmas.” This piano ballad is an easy listening track filled with warm happy vibes. 2020 has been challenging and tough for everybody. So hearing a Christmas song at this point of the year is comforting. It doesn’t really matter that they released it the day before Halloween because as soon as we hit November 1st, most families will already be in the Christmas spirit.

I can guarantee you this will be a hit with their fans. Accompanying the video seen above, is a photo from when they were kids in matching pajamas on Christmas morning. Isn’t that sweet?!?

Anyways, the lyrics are about priceless childhood memories of Christmas like waiting for Santa, caroling, and opening presents. Now that they’re older and married, they got a different appreciation for the holidays.

They tweeted, “For us this song stirs up memories of childhood snowball fights & finding the nearest hill to sled. It brings us back to spending time with family setting up the Christmas tree. Hopefully it can bring you guys the same feelings of warmth & happiness that creating it brought us.”

Christmas is a special time for making memories with our families so hopefully a tender and soft song like this will spark some holiday joy this season despite the pandemic.

If there is a Christmas in Rockefeller Center special this year via Zoom performances, I predict they will sing this song. Otherwise expect them to promote this single on other holiday concert events on TV/radio later this year. 🎅

“All About You” by The Knocks feat. Foster The People

EDM duo The Knocks have teamed up with Foster The People again following their previous collaborative effort, “Ride Or Die” in 2018.

The band revealed on their Twitter page recently that this song is all “about being lost and finding light in love.”

From my interpretation, it’s about someone who got dumped and now all they can do now is wonder what went wrong, you’re left crushed as to why things couldn’t have continued until eventually you start to see things from your ex’s perspective. Then and only then will you finally understand why the relationship ended the way it did and it’s finally in everyone’s best interest to just move on.

Sonically, it has some cool synths and feel good tambourine playing mixed with some cool beats over layed with FTP’s Mark Foster’s soothing vocals. If you liked their previous collab, “Ride Or Die” or are a big fan of each artist or both, then I believe you will enjoy this single too.

It remains to be seen if this will be part of The Knocks’ next album, but feel free to share your predictions below in the comments box.

“that won’t save us” by Against The Current

Rock group, Against The Current is back with a cathartic new song called “that won’t save us.” It’s their first official release for 2020 which follows their 2019 remixes and stripped live singles for “Almost Forgot,” and “Voices,” respectively.

A lot of pent up anger and frustration gets conveyed in the “that won’t save us” lyrics which delves into a broken relationship. Deep hard hitting questions like, “What did I hear you say?, what’s got you so afraid?, how did we become so numb?, and are you proud of what we’ve come to be?” are posed.

According to an interview from Alternative Press Magazine, lead singer Chrissy Costanza said, “The song points the finger right in your face and says, ‘What you’re doing right now isn’t going to save us. What do you want to do about it? Do you want to keep doing what you’re doing and know this is going to die? Or, are you ready to make a change?'”

So if you’re feeling confused and or conflicted about your current relationship with someone and you can tell things are falling apart, then this song is for you. If you’re looking for a new solid rock song to jam to, then add this one to your playlists.

Costanza’s vocals are A+ and I can’t wait to hear what their next (third) full album will sound like. If you haven’t discover their body of work, I highly recommend you to, especially if you’re a fan of other rock artists like Paramore and Avril Lavigne. I wish there were more female led rock acts out there. Agreed? Share your thoughts below in the comments box.

“Burnin” by Petit Biscuit

20-year-old DJ Petit Biscuit a.k.a. Mehdi Benjelloun just dropped his second studio album, Parachute which includes the latest single, “Burnin.”

According to his description for the song/music video, “Burnin” is a very sensual song…it’s about ambiguity between two friends with benefits… one fell in love and the other one is playing with that ambiguity. Something that happens when you’re very young and innocent and don’t know better.”

Sonically and lyrically, it’s a departure from his 2017 hit “Sunset Lover.” While that track was more layered around one line of lyric, this one contains deeper lyrics about love on top of a consistent but still multi-layered track. What remains the same in both instances, is the upbeat dance pop feeling you get after hearing it.

It’s interesting to see how he matures in the music industry, and I appreciate these new tunes from him. How about you? Do you like the new vibes in Parachute? Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below.

New Music Friday: October 16

Happy Friday!! We’ve made it through another week! I’ve selected five new candidates for your playlists this weekend! Hope you enjoy them. We’ve got the latest from Grammy-nominated artist, Demi Lovato fresh off her world premiere performance at the BBMAs earlier this week, pop singers-songwriters Lauv & Conan Gray with a catchy new anthem, EDM group Louis The Child and their collaboration with alternative rock group COIN, & last but not least DJ/singer/entrepreneur Paris Hilton with her amazing new collab with DJ Lodato.

“Commander In Chief” by Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato follows her strong and emotional post breakup single, “Still Have Me” two weeks ago with another equally strong and emotional song called “Commander In Chief.” She co-wrote this track with none other than FINNEAS, brother to Grammy-winning artist, Billie Eilish and fellow pop singer herself, Julia Michaels.

This time she’s taking a stand against the current administration and POTUS himself. She enlisted several individuals of varying ages, races, and ethnicities to lip sync her evocative message to the President so the whole world can hear. We see everyone from a young Black girl to an older white male with a hat that reads “Make America United Again” to an adult female in a wheelchair mouthing the words: “Commander in Chief, honestly/If I did the things you do/I couldn’t sleep, seriously/Do you even know the truth?/We’re in a state of crisis, people are dyin’/While you line your pockets deep/Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still/Be able to breathe?” Powerful imagery to watch!

The strong chorus references the racial injustices seen earlier this summer and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has tragically killed over 210,000 Americans to this date. Lovato asks how can the President behave like this, so ignorant and heartless, hiding from the protesters, lining his pockets from these tragic events and she wonders, does he really know the truth?!?

She hopes this song will elicit a response from this administration while also enabling a public discussion. With less than three weeks left until Election Day, she’s using this song as a platform to stress the importance of voting.

ICYMI: Demi performed this song for the first time at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards two nights ago. Check it out here:

“Fake” by Lauv & Conan Gray

Singer-songwriter Lauv follows his five-track EP, Without You with a new collaborative effort with fellow pop singer Conan Gray. Gray, in case you didn’t know, is best known for his hit song “Heather” which currently has over 22 million views on YouTube and “Maniac” which has been certified Gold by the RIAA. This is the first time the two artists have worked together on a song.

The two twenty-somethings explore the world of fakeness in this fun new song. Know someone who acts one way to others but totally different towards you? If you have a fake friend or relationship either currently or in the past, then you should definitely check their single out!

They sing in the rather catchy and anthemic chorus, “Man, you’re so f—ing fake (ahh ah)/You don’t mean a single thing you say (ahh ah)/If we’ve got a problem, say it to my face (ahh ah)/And you’re just like all the people that you hate/You’re so fake/When the real you’s back, I’ll pick up my phone.” Through a series of different mini sets they travel from one to another with set production extras providing the props and necessary components for some cool effects alongside including a confetti blaster! It’s such a COVID style music video yet it’s simplicities make for quite an enjoyable video to watch unfold. So kudos to everyone on their respective teams who worked on this production safely during this ongoing pandemic.

“SCAR” by Ashton Irwin

5SOS member, Ashton Irwin is back with another tasting/preview off his upcoming solo album, Superbloom. In “Scar,” Irwin wears his emotions on his sleeves as he sings about mental health in this song. He’s advocating to us that life is filled with so much joy, so many possibilities and just because life hands you lemons, you simply mustn’t give up. The scars we get in life provide lessons for the future not a helpless pit of doom and gloom.

I love the arrangement of this rock song. Love the inclusion of the harps which made the song so unique. The guitar chords have a soothing tone and the drums provided the punch for that maximum effect. The chorus and post-chorus leaves an indelible mark! The bridge leading to the outro was out of this world good! Please turn it up! It’s truly an aural experience.

In a recent tweet the 26-year-old singer-songwriter calls it his “favorite song” off the record. He also describes it as “powerful and raw” adding that it’s “a message to my family, a message for anyone that listens, about perseverance though periods of intense struggle.” His emotional openness is truly commendable!

Like I said the last time I mentioned Ashton Irwin for my picks, I’m excited to hear the rest of his album and him sharing his story/journey for listeners all around the world!

“Self Care” by Louis The Child & COIN

EDM group Louis The Child has teamed up with alternative rock group COIN for the first time. In this upbeat dance track, the two groups are preaching the importance of self care.

“I do it for myself/I’m dancin’ for no one else/I do it for myself, baby/Ah-ah, ah-ah-ah, ah, ah.” The chorus really strikes a chord because if you’re feeling like you’re energies have been exhausted as of late or been absorbed by others and not yourself, then you need to listen to these lines and the song as a whole. It will definitely give you a wake up call to say, ‘hey, listen, I’m important too. I deserve the rest. I deserve a break. I deserve to be happy too. I deserve to be appreciated for the things I do in life!’ The list goes on!!

See the accompanying music video above for some feel good vibes as the two groups and some interpretive dancers just let loose and have fun in a desert!

“I Blame You” by Paris Hilton

Credit: @ParisHilton

Call it a comeback single, but really, has Paris Hilton really left? Hilton dropped this surprise new dance track and it’s all about love despite the song title, “I Blame You.”

“I feel good, I feel good. I blame you, I blame you.” Those simple lines get repeated in such a way that you can’t help but say, ‘wow, this really makes me feel happy and positive in life.’

So if you’re feeling like you met your better half or just have a really close friend and or family member, then this song is for you! They bring the joy and sunshine to your life and you can credit them for changing your perspective on life especially if you’ve had a troubled past, or a rough patch in a previous relationship, or even something as trivial as receiving a bad grade in school. It doesn’t define you forever.

DJ Lodato really sets the mood for this track and I want to say he mixed it excellently with the entertainer/entrepreneur’s dreamy vocals.

Paris shared in a recent Instagram post that proceeds from this song will go to Breaking Code Silence, a “movement organized by a network of survivors and advocates to raise awareness of the abuses in the troubled teen industry.”

Hilton recently released her eye-opening YouTube documentary which dives deeper into her life story from her childhood to present day. In this doc, she details for the first time publicly, the verbal, psychological and physical abuse she endured when she was sent to Provo Canyon School when she was a teenager. Watch her YouTube Original documentary, This Is Paris, here. You can’t help after watching this, to support Paris Hilton. Virtual hugs all around!

Now she’s standing up and raising awareness for the survivors in support of closing down that institution. Feel free to sign her Change.org petition.

New Music Friday: September 25

Hello readers! Happy Friday once again! I’m pleased to share another round of music recommendations this week for you all! I’m highlighting all new music from Sia, OneRepublic, Kylie Minogue, Bastille & Waterparks. Feel free to read on and listen! Share your thoughts and feelings about them in the comments box below the post.

“Courage To Change” by Sia

Kicking off this week’s picks with the talented musician, Sia and her new song “Courage To Change.” With the recent headlines of the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the ridiculous announcement that none of the officers are going to be charged for killing Breonna Taylor, we could all use a song right now to help heal these gut-wrenching blows.

Taken from her upcoming directorial debut film, Music, the 9x Grammy-nominated singer-sognwriter left a powerful message in the description of the new song on YouTube.

“The only thing that remains constant is change.” Now more than ever we need to pull together to fight for humanity, social justice, equality & so much more. It’s time for real change.”

With the upcoming election in November for the U.S., hopefully we do see the first steps towards real and impactful change! A new president will send ripple effects all around the world and for generations to come.

Musically and sonically, this song is another anthemic track from her. It deserves all the love and attention from the hardcore Sia fans, the casuals and anyone new who discovers this song out of the whim. It starts off a bit of a downer lyrically speaking in the first verse, but her strong and comforting vocals pivots and reassures us that “we’re not alone in all this” and that when we stand together, “we can do anything!” Also, that piano solo bridge will give you goosebumps! Soooo good!

CBS has already put out a new CBS Salutes commercial campaign which features this inspiring song. Check that out if you like, by clicking here.

I wanted to end my thoughts about the song by saying this track along with her 2016 single, “Unstoppable” go hand in hand. They’re both such amazing motivational boosters to have on your playlists!

“Wild Life” by OneRepublic

For my second pick of the week, we have another movie soundtrack song with OneRepublic’s contribution to the Disney+ Original Film, Clouds. It’s titled “Wild Life” and wow just wow, this is another amazing song from the Grammy-nominated group.

Early reactions from the comments section on YouTube say this feels like a Native track and I agree! The beginning sounds similar to their deep cut “Au Revoir.” The orchestral sounding, anthemic feel to it gives me the chills and by the chorus you just feel totally immersed with this world they beautifully paint. Everything from the waves of notes being played to lead singer, Ryan Tedder’s signature vocals, it’s simply spectacular! A well produced/mixed track, all thanks to their collaborator and mixing engineer, Jeff Nathaniel. He also co-written/co-produced the band’s previous singles, “Better Days,” and “Lose Somebody” with Kygo.

From a lyrical standpoint, this feels like a quarantine song because we’ve all had a crazy 2020 thus far and it’s extremely likely that all of your plans for the year have been altered in some shape or form. We all want to just be free, spread our proverbial wings, do the things that make us happy in life and be our unique selves. But in difficult times like this one where we can’t go out as much as we used to, it’s easy to feel let down by things you can’t control. Our dreams may be on hold right now but staying hopeful and optimistic will lead to brighter days ahead and I love how the band conveys that in this song. New plans can be made and new experiences will emerge once we get through this health crisis and a widely available and safe vaccine is distributed around the world.

From a visual standpoint in the lyric video, you’ll enjoy the song even more as you witness the beauty of the ocean waves crashing along the rocks and shoreline, the cries of seagulls flying all about and the lush forest trees grouped together from both perspectives, high atop and on the ground. Feel free to close your eyes when you replay the song. Simply awesome!

The band’s upcoming album, Human was suppose to drop earlier this summer but was put on hold as the band felt it wasn’t right to put out during a global pandemic. Hopefully a new date will be revealed soon, but for now, this soundtrack song will keep us waiting patiently at what’s to come in 2021.

“Magic” by Kylie Minogue

Dance-pop singer Kylie Minogue really knows her bread and butter! She just released her second tasting from her highly anticipated new album, Disco this week and it’s pure magic!

If you could use a serotonin boost right now, look no further to Minogue’s “Magic.” Also, if you’re pleased with your current status of your love life whether it be your first year dating or several years or more together, then you will connect well with these lyrics which depicts someone who’s literally living on cloud 9 right now and doesn’t want that sheer bliss to stop.

I have a feeling that this track will be heavily played in a post-pandemic world at clubs and parties all across the globe! But for now, you’ll have to enjoy it and dance along from the comforts of your own home.

“survivin'” by Bastille

English rock band, Bastille dropped a new track this week to the surprise of many of their fans. I feel this is their quarantine jam and I’m happy to report it’s an amazing song!

Face it, 2020 has been out of the ordinary. It seems like we’ve established a new daily norm of just getting out of the bed and just getting through each day, week in and week out. The boredom and monotony has settled in for the time being for most of us. You start or already are questioning the current state of the world. If you’re feeling that way, then this song is for you!

This track follows their other surprise drop, “WHAT YOU GONNA DO???” ft. Graham Coxon back in July. That song was more on the rock side of things while “survivin'” is more relaxed and contemporary. Both sound like a departure from their previous hits like “Pompeii,” “Bad Blood,” & “Flaws.”

I’m eager to hear what their upcoming fourth album will sound like. I love it when a band explores their sound and experiment in new genres or sub-genres. They don’t force themselves to be in just one box. They’re truly an authentic band to listen to.

The accompanying lyric video will leave a great impression on you. The generally positive vibes vocally speaking is overlayed on trippy backgrounds of clouds and lava lamp-esque colors. A true visual delight!

Sonically, I was caught off guard by the sax solo parts. I don’t know about you, but I thought it was a cool and smart decision they made. You can thank their touring member Rittipo for that contribution!

“Lowkey As Hell” by Waterparks

Pop-rock band, Waterparks is back with a new song called “Lowkey As Hell.” While it sounds like a positive upbeat track, the lyrics are quite a downer as lead singer, Awsten Knight expresses throughout this short but concise 2:15 song. He delves into topics of success, loneliness and overall mental health. Of course the work they put out is resonating with fans, but at what cost? He ponders, does it make sense to keep making heart breaking songs?

“I guess at least my work is working, right?
I think people like me better when I’m hurt inside
They say it’s not true, and they hope I’m alright
But their eyes probably rolled at the first line”

An interesting nugget about this song is the fact that he changed parts of the “Watch What Happens Next?” pre-chorus and post-chorus lines from, “I like cool shirts, I like cold rings/I want a big house, I want nice things.” to “I like cool shirts, I like cold rings/I want a big house, but I’m hiding.” That shows just because you’re rich and famous, he’s still human just like all of us.

Like what Demi Lovato and Marshmello advocate in their new song “OK Not To Be OK,” it truly is okay to not feeling okay as long as you open up to others so that you could get the support you need. In this case, it’s Knight cathartically revealing to the Parxies, he never had a day off since his blue hair days (Double Dare era) and that he should call his parents more often to let them know he’s fine. Hopefully in quarantine, he’s gotten the rest he needs and he’s spending some valuable personal time with the fam away from the hustle and bustle.

The band has come off their most successful album cycles yet with Fandom in 2019 and then the pandemic hit and ever since then ’til now, it’s been lowkey and highkey a challenging time for them. Knight really misses his friends and going out on tour with the band. They had to halt all touring this summer, so they’ve lost the ability to play live in front of their fans.

Knight went dark on his socials for five months only to finally emerge just this past week on Instagram Live with an acoustic session of older hits like “Rare,” “Lucky People” and “Dream Boy” and subtly hinting at the new era by playing a snippet of this song while not so subtly cutting off his neon green hair to the listeners’ surprise. That basically confirmed the Fandom era was over.

It remains to be seen what the new “G” era will sound like. The band will likely continue that tradition of naming albums in consecutive order. But expect the band to pivot in all sorts of directions sonically speaking in the new record as they too do not like to sound the same in every album.

With their new label, 300 Entertainment which mostly caters to hip-hop artists, perhaps we will hear more hip-hop and trap vibes spliced in with their rock roots moving forward. The future continues to look bright for these guys!

New Music Friday: September 18

Happy Friday folks! This week’s I’m highlighting the latest songs from Grammy-winning artist, Sam Smith, EDM hitmaker Kygo with his remix of one of Donna Summer’s timeless songs, pop singer MAX featuring SUGA of mega hit sensational K-pop group, BTS, alternative band LANY and last but not least, indie pop artist Rachel Platten.

“Diamonds” by Sam Smith

4x Grammy-winner, Sam Smith returns with their latest single off their upcoming third studio album, Love Goes which drops October 30th!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, Smith had to delay the release of SS3 which was originally titled, To Die For from May 1st, to June 5th and ultimately til this fall at the end of next month. Overall, this album cycle took up two years of his life to make. So in that span of time, a lot of events and personal life moments definitely were captured in this album’s essence. They call “each song a separate story” and that the process of making the new record was “magical, therapeutic, and FUN.”

See the full letter he posted to his fans here:

This single follows the release of “My Oasis” back in July which featured Nigerian singer-songwriter, Burna Boy. Smith also teamed up with Demi Lovato in the charted single, “I’m Ready” earlier this year. Both songs will appear in the new album’s tracklist.

In “Diamonds,” Smith doesn’t hold onto material love anymore. They dance solo in this upbeat electropop track showing confidence and poise while illustrating the navigation of this new chapter in life without this lover who took them for granted.

Are you looking forward to hearing the rest of Smith’s third album soon? What do you think about this new song? Share your comments below.

“Hot Stuff” by Kygo & Donna Summer

Kygo returns with another remix of another legendary artist! This time he’s taking on The Queen Of Disco a.k.a. the late Donna Summer’s dance classic, “Hot Stuff.” It follows his previous remixes of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do,” and the late Whitney Houston’s “Higher Love.”

In the music video for “Hot Stuff,” we see Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes, two of the stars of Netflix’s hit drama, “Outer Banks” as the two lovers seen having a blast together. They definitely have that lovey-dovey couple vibe to them and shown great chemistry in this video. It must’ve been a really enjoyable time producing this on set in Carolina Beach, North Carolina.

Like the original version from 1979, this iteration will also put you in high spirits after listening to it. Put this on your feel good playlists today and dance to your heart’s content!

I wonder what Kygo will do next!?! He’s been picking so many iconic songs from equally iconic artists lately for his remixes. Which artist would you like to see him reimagine next? Let me know in the comments box down below.

“Blueberry Eyes” by MAX feat. SUGA of BTS

This is the summer of fruit based songs! Harry Styles can claim the watermelon but pop singer MAX has rightfully done justice for the blueberry!

MAX has made a tender love song for all those couples out there who are living on cloud 9 with each other. His real life wife, Emily stars alongside him in the music video and they are expecting their first child later this December. I enjoy all the blue aesthetics/wardrobe they wore in making this video. I thought it was a cute and sweet video from start to finish.

BTS member Suga lends his vocals for a verse. The two are very good friends and this is the second time they have worked together. See: “Burn It” for the first instance in which MAX was the featured artist and Suga was the leading vocal under his other stage name Agust D.

In a short message attached to the video, MAX cites:
“Bringing this music video to life has been such a special experience. I wanted it to feel as if Disney magically made a baby with Wes Anderson in the world of Colour Vision with every bit of our souls intertwined. Emily is my actual wife and she is really pregnant right now with our first child, so art imitates life in a fun way with this video. We studied and memorized all of the Korean lyrics to Suga’s incredible and romantic verse and all of the blueberries in the bathtub ended up being reused to create limited edition blueberry dyed blueberry eyes shirts. This video is a piece of our hearts and I hope it sparks the same magic in you viewing it as it did for us creating it. Thank you to Suga for being so brilliant on this song and more importantly for being a wonderful friend. Much love.”

For what’s been a crazy 2020 thus far, it’s comforting to hear songs like this one, so you should definitely add this to your playlists this week.

“cowboy in LA” by LANY

Continuing the warm loving sentiments is this latest tasting from LA based alternative band, LANY’s upcoming third album, Mama’s Boy. In “cowboy in LA,” lead singer Paul Jason Klein brings up his Oklahoma roots and how it’s made him a unique, caring and respectful man he is today. He wants to take things nice and slow with his date and thinks beautiful things and places like the sunset, swaying palm trees and Malibu respectfully are all pale in comparison to his lover. Instead of going to the club or going to a crowded place, he would rather do something more romantic 1 to 1 in order to establish a deeper connection with each other.

It’s such a nice mellow track to listen to and overall, the lyrics were beautifully written. This song follows the release of “Good Guys,” “If This Is The Last Time,” & “You!” earlier this summer. 10 more unreleased tracks are going to be a part of the next album so expect all the feels coming October 2nd!

“Soldiers” by Rachel Platten

.

Singer-songwriter Rachel Platten is back everyone! Now as an independent artist, she penned another powerful anthem for you all to hear. On her socials, she revealed why she wanted to release this song:

“Its my answer to all the division and confusion around us. I really believe that we NEED art and beauty of all kinds right now to help remind us who we are and that we all have the same beating hearts. So this is my little call to creators of all kinds – we need YOU.”

She goes on to say that “we need your brave voices and your truth. Keep sharing your beauty. We might fall but we won’t break!”

Personally, I admire her career thus far, and I love that she’s not doing it all for just the fame, and the glitz and glamour. If you loved “Fight Song,” this is like the continuation of that song. You can definitely feel the loving connection in this ballad as evident by the reassuring chorus, “No matter how the light may fade/We’ll carry on, it’s how we’re raised/Yeah, we might fall/But we won’t break/Yeah, we won’t break.”

Overall, it’s such a heartfelt song that deserves your attention this week and I hope you add this one to your playlists as well! May this song give you strength in what’s been a challenging year thus far!

I’m excited to hear what’s next for Platten and what her next album will sound like. How about you? Share your feelings in the comments box below. 🙂

That wraps up this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner. If you liked what you read and want to stay updated on all future blog postings, then kindly hit the follow button below. Thanks! Stay safe and happy listening! 🎵 😄

New Music Friday: August 28

Hello all! Happy Friday! Philip’s Music Corner brings you another exciting edition of picks for you to listen to this weekend! This week’s lineup includes two powerful collaborations in BLACKPINK with Selena Gomez and Calvin Harris with The Weeknd. There’s also new tracks from Katy Perry, 5 Seconds of Summer and ILLENIUM. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday for August 28, 2020!

“Ice Cream” by BLACKPINK & Selena Gomez

K-pop girl group sensation, BLACKPINK have teamed up with pop icon Selena Gomez for a fun track called “Ice Cream.” It’s the first time the two artists have worked on a song together. The collaborative effort has earned the nickname Selpink across social media. This is a really catchy tune sonically speaking, perfect for that late-summer vibe at the beach with your friends/family or poolside hangout.

The brightly colored music video is filled with a lot of flavors, if you will. In it, it alternates with Gomez driving an actual ice cream truck to singing and posing in front of a vintage convertible car, and the girls of BLACKPINK playfully interacting on very Instagrammable sets. Both artists are dressed stylishly for the summer heat!

Did You Know? The track was co-written by Grammy-winning pop artist, Ariana Grande. You can hear some influences of Ms. Grande’s vocal stylings when BLACKPINK member Jennie sings in the second verse.

Did You Know? The entrepreneurial Selena Gomez teamed up with Serendipity in creating her own ice cream flavor: Cookies ‘n Cream Remix (pink vanilla ice cream and cookie pieces)

Back to discussing the song, the post chorus is very addictive the more you listen to it. “Ice cream chillin’, chillin. Ice cream chillin'” Doesn’t that make you crave an actual ice cream cone/cup right about now? With the summer months still heating up across the country, it’s very fitting to have one to cool us all down.

Overall, this is a collaboration that works well and it will benefit both fandoms moving forward. I predict this will go viral over the next 24 hours, and maybe perhaps reclaim the title of most views over the first 24 hour period for a music video which was previously held by BLACKPINK until fellow K-Pop group, BTS took the #1 spot last week with their new song, Dynamite.

Lastly, I just wanted to point out the continuing trend of female artists coming together in 2020. Notable mainstream examples include BLACKPINK & Lady Gaga in “Sour Candy” and Doja Cat & Nicki Minaj in “Say So.”

“Over Now” by Calvin Harris (with The Weeknd)

Moving along with this second pick of the week is EDM-hitmaker Calvin Harris with his latest collaboration with R&B/pop artist, The Weeknd in “Over Now.” The song is about a guy who’s literally done with his ex. There’s no more second chances, no more redo’s, no more going back to the girl he once called his girlfriend. For both parties, it’s best to move on and that’s the overall message of the song. The Weeknd’s smooth vocals layed over this groovy arrangement made for a very lit track in my opinion. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments box below.

This is the first time the two artists have worked together and to be honest, they hit it right out of the park on their first try! The Weeknd’s popularity has soared in 2020 with his smash hit song “Blinding Lights” which is certified Platinum by the RIAA and is also a Billboard Hot 100 mainstay approaching 40 weeks straight on said chart. I expect this song will also go to #1, giving the two artists yet another mainstream hit to their credit.

The accompanying music video for this single features a computer generated version of The Weeknd dancing and pouring his heart and soul out as he sings the song with trippy backdrops of cityscapes, shrooms, and outer space scenery. Props to the visual effects artists who brought this vision to life.

“Cry About It Later” by Katy Perry

What a week pop star Katy Perry is having! Just two days ago, she became a first time mom by giving birth to her daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. Now today, her fifth major studio album, Smile is officially out! She joked on her IG page by posting a meme that this was her second child.

This uptempo song is great for those who want to move on from a relationship and just de-stress overall. There’s no need to be down on yourself because you can find someone new and shed your tears afterwards.

The animated video for the song gave me Chilling Adventures of Sabrina vibes for some reason. Very cute. What are your thoughts? Voice them in the comments box down below. You can see the other Smile Series videos, by clicking here.

Perry is embracing her new chapter in her life both professionally and personally, so this song is a perfect addition to her discography. Hopefully this breath of fresh air a.k.a. the new album era is resonant with the fans this time around. We don’t want to see Perry lose her smile again!

“Kill My Time” by 5 Seconds of Summer

Australian pop rock band 5SOS is back with a bonus track off their album, CALM which has a new iteration called CALM PLUS1. The song was previously exclusive to their online merch store but now it’s available on all streaming platforms. This single has a very 1980’s feel to it in my opinion. Singer-songwriter, Luke Hemmings discusses being in love with someone but there’s a catch, he awaits what she decides since this girl is also in a relationship with somebody else too! He doesn’t want to kill his time with anyone else but her. He talks about his desires to take her to the dive bar downtown and the prospects of having a fun time.

Love is truly complicated and I’m sure there are 5SOS fans who can relate to this situation and will connect well to this song. But if not, and you’re like me, you can still enjoy this track for its unique arrangement and overall sound. I appreciate the maturity this group has gone through over the years and I’m looking forward to what’s to come!

“Nightlight” by ILLENIUM

Capping off this week’s picks is this new single from Nick Miller, DJ, musician and record producer better known for his stage name, ILLENIUM. This is the first single off his forthcoming fourth album, title TBD. It follows his 2019 album release of Ascend which spawned the hits “Takeaway” with The Chainsmokers and Lennon Stella and “Good Things Fall Apart” with Jon Bellion. Both songs are certified Platinum by the RIAA.

“Nightlight” is a love song with vocals from the angelic and soothing Annika Wells. She’s a Californian singer-songwriter with previous credits on ILLENIUM’s past albums Awake and Ascend. I enjoy this song for the vocals and for it’s production. The distorted sounding guitars plus Wells’ vocals match really well together.

Thematically, the song is about someone in love with somebody and that somebody is their ride or die. This special someone help you get through the tough time(s) in life.

Hopefully in 2021, ILLENIUM can resume touring and can showcase the songs he’s cooking up in quarantine from his next album.

That does it for this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a call to action in light of the recent news of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin who was shot by a police officer 7 times in the back in front of his three kids this week. Truly sad what the world has become as of late. Please consider helping out by visiting this link: https://www.instagram.com/p/CEQt1y4DyMe/ or by donating to the GoFundMe page at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/justiceforjacobblake

As always, please stay safe, and be kind to one another. Happy listening!
