New Music Friday: January 22

It’s Friday, January 22, 2021 and another New Music Friday post has arrived for you to go check out! The following FIVE picks are ones that I highly recommend this week and they’re from alternative pop singer Tate McRae, pop rock band Weezer, house music duo Silk City feat. Ellie Goulding, pop singer Sabrina Carpenter & EDM artist 3lau w/ Norwegian DJ Funkin Matt & featured rising vocalist Frawley!

“rubberband” by Tate McRae

17-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae continues to impress following her smash hit, “you broke me first” from last year. In “rubberband,” she talks about having regrets about a relationship.

She posted in the above video’s description that “snapping a rubberband is a way to get over something…. sometimes even a person. this song means a lot to me, i hope you guys love it.”

If you already broke up with the person you once dated and now have a ton of questions surrounding said breakup, then first off, you’re not the only one, and secondly, this song is suited for you to hear!

McRae really captures the essence of the struggle of post-breakup(s) in her choreographed moves. I appreciate her efforts for being vulnerable in crafting this song for her fans.

I predict this song will be a hit with the TikTok crowd. Young fans will likely be creating lip-synced videos of them snapping a rubber band (hopefully not too hard) on their wrists, as well as replicating her talented dance moves in their own creative clips.

It’s expected that this song will be a part of the young musician’s next EP which will drop later this year.

“All My Favorite Songs” by Weezer

Grammy-winning rock band, Weezer returns with surprise news of a new album not named Van Weezer. That album was suppose to drop last year to coincide with their coheadlining tour, the Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Green Day, but has since been pushed to May 2021. Instead, they are going ahead and calling this new project, OK Human their new fourteenth studio album. The lead single, “All My Favorite Songs,” is out now and the video stars the band alongside fellow actor Sonny Golden (Modern Family), and actress/dancer Monroe Cline as they teeter in and out of the virtual and reality worlds in the music video.

Sonically, it’s an upbeat jam but lyrically it contradicts all the happiness. You might take it from a quarantine perspective because the pandemic has messed with our overall mental health over the past year and our plans have been altered or been put on pause. So it’s okay to feel disappointed by the crisis. It’s a natural human instinct. It makes one think, at least from my own thoughts, would this album be made or even sound like this if it weren’t for the pandemic?!? Sometimes there are hidden blessings behind a dark moment in time such as this one and also as evident by the ending of the music video where Golden’s character meets someone new online a.k.a. Cline’s character and eventually befriends her.

The album, OK Human is a reference to fellow Grammy-winning rock group Radiohead and their 1997 album, OK Computer. The band posted on their socials a little background info about the album citing it “was made at a time when humans-playing-instruments was a thing of the past. All we could do is look back on ancient times when humans really mattered and when the dark tech-takeover fantasy didn’t exist.” The instruments they used were tuned to the ’60s and 70’s styles and with the orchestra sounding like the 18th and 19th centuries. They added, “we had no click track or loops or hi-tech sounds. Not even an electric guitar.”

There will be a total of 12 new tracks, including this one, on the new record. Are you excited for two Weezer albums this year? Let me know in the comments below!

“New Love” by Silk City feat. Ellie Goulding

Need a new dance track to add to your playlists this week? Then you’re in luck! Look no further to house music duo, Silk City’s latest collaboration with fellow pop singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. This track follows the group’s 2019 Platinum-certified hit “Electricity” with Dua Lipa.

In the music video for “New Love,” Goulding is seen singing and owning the stage with a big perm and donning trendy 1980s fashion! This is such a feel-good track that will have you dancing on your own living room floor! It will definitely raise your spirits/mood.

Lyrically, the song takes pride in showcasing the renewed self-love one has developed in their life. This could also branch out into overall self-image, body positivity and self-esteem as well as self-acceptance.

I give props to multi-Grammy winners Mark Ronson and Diplo, the masterminds behind this musical project. It’s another excellently produced single from them and having Goulding as their featured artist was the right choice!

Who knows?!? This could very well be eligible for numerous awards and accolades this year and in next year’s Grammy Awards! Thoughts?

“Skin” by Sabrina Carpenter

21-year-old singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter now signed under Island Records released her response track to the love triangle drama between her, actor Joshua Bassett (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) and Olivia Rodrigo (HSMTMTS.) Rodrigo’s “driver’s license” has seen a surge in mainstream popularity and success this month so it’s only fitting that Carpenter shared her side of the story.

Carpenter talks about how she’s happy with her relationship with Bassett and that Rodrigo shouldn’t “drive [herself] insane” about their romance. They could be friends but she doesn’t see they could even if they were to pretend to in another life. You can’t get under her skin while he’s on hers.

Overall, this is a fiery track and I applaud Carpenter’s candidness in telling her side of the story with her carefully crafted verses. She’s definitely showing her confidence and ability to not let others tell her how to feel. Expect this track to contend on the charts in the days and weeks to come.

As the songstress sings in the bridge, “I just hope that one day/We both can laugh about it/When it’s not in our face.” Hopefully this drama will get resolved publicly and they can remain at peace one day. At the end of the day, we should leave it up to the artists themselves to settle it and not let the fans misconstrue all the facts. Please be kind in their respective comments sections of their social media posts. 🙏

“Everything” by 3lau & Funkin Matt feat. Frawley

Singer-songwriter Frawley joins 3lau & Funkin Matt’s latest collaborative project in “Everything.” This is an up-tempo song that talks about the fake love one can detect in an ex-lover.

You know they’re lying to you and even they know they’re lying to you despite showing up at your doorstep trying to convince you to date them again.

Frawley’s vocals are solid on this track and this song in my opinion has what it takes to be a really big dance/club hit in 2021!

3lau is promoting his new single in the world of NFT or Nifty Gateway, a blockchain powered world where you can earn cool collectibles. Read this article to get a better understanding of this innovative technology.

He also started the “Everything” scholarship which is open to any high school or undergraduate student. Check that out here.

New Music Friday: January 8

Happy Friday! It’s January 8, 2021 and this week we got five amazing picks for you to check out. There’s fresh tracks from pop star Zayn, Grammy-winning rock band Kings Of Leon, 10x Grammy winner Taylor Swift, Grammy-nominated EDM duo Galantis with TikTok star JVKE & indie pop band London Grammar. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post here at Philip’s Music Corner.

“Vibez” by ZAYN

27-year-old singer-songwriter Zayn Malik released his latest single “Vibez,” which is the first for this year and follows last year’s release, “Better.” His highly-anticipated new album, Nobody Is Listening drops next Friday. In this song, he’s just straight up vibing (pun intended) with his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. But for listeners/fans alike, the sensual feelings can be directed to your own respective lover. I thought the song’s lyrics were carefully thought out. It’s very intimate, passionate, and will fuel future healthy love-making sessions for days to come. A snippet of the chorus goes like this:

Don’t keep me waiting
I’ve been waiting all night to get closer
Yeah, you already know I got it for you
You know the vibes, know the vibes, put it on ya
If it movin’ too fast, we go slower

The music video opens up in a theater as if we were watching a Broadway play. It starts off with Zayn alone in a bedroom then he gets up to go for a drive in a mock mini car. It then cuts to Zayn on a treadmill walking through an imaginary forest filled with fireflies surrounding him then cuts to him on a boat named the S.S. Malik. He meets a friendly whale then goes back on land to sit on a couch which transitions back to the bedroom with another clone of Zayn watching from the theater seats. Very imaginative and an interestingly produced video. The description for the video recommends you to watch and listen to the video via headphones for a more immersive experience. How do you like the video? Share your feedback in the comments below.

Anyways, this song would make a perfect choice for your Valentine’s playlist(s) this year and beyond. It also would work well for your date night playlists. Enjoy!

You can expect a total of 11 tracks to be a part of the first time dad’s new album. Also, expect tour dates to be released once the pandemic clears. Visit his official website to stay updated on all the latest news.

“The Bandit” by Kings Of Leon

Nashville-based rock band Kings of Leon have emerged from their five year long hiatus this week with the announcement that their upcoming eighth studio album titled, When You See Yourself will be releasing on March 5th. Two new singles dropped yesterday afternoon giving fans a sampling at what’s to come.

There will be 11 new tracks on the new record. Lead single, “The Bandit” is what I would like to highlight this week. This black-and-white music video shows the band jamming out to the rocking new track. It’s another solid song from the Grammy-winning band if I do say so myself. I love the guitar melody/chord progressions. It really drives the song’s lyrics and Caleb Followill’s leading vocals.

This track was produced by Markus Dravs. For those who don’t know who Dravs is, he helped produced hit songs like “Paradise,” and “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay as well as “The Suburbs,” and “Reflektor” by Arcade Fire just to name a few.

On KOL’s Twitter page, they released the full track list plus the album art and in case you wanted to know how those look like, feel free to click here.

“it’s time to go” by Taylor Swift

Alas, the bonus tracks off Taylor Swift’s latest album, evermore are out! “it’s time to go” is about her past relationship with her old record label, Big Machine Label Group and the recent public drama surrounding her masters of her first six albums which were acquired by Scooter Braun and then later sold for profits without her consent. As we speak, she’s in the process of re-recording all her old albums so that she can claim the upper-hand again.

It’s also about when you have that gut feeling to leave, you have to listen to yourself and do so. It’s not a weak move, rather it’s the opposite as the 31-year-old sings, “Sometimes giving up is the strong thing/Sometimes to run is the brave thing/Sometimes walking out is the one thing/That will find you the right thing.”

This can also apply to a dead end job, a bad boss, a sour relationship with a friend, partner, etc. You know when your time is up in these situations and you have to cut them out of your life.

Sonically speaking, the track fits well with evermore‘s overall aesthetic. The National’s Aaron Dessner once again helped co-wrote the track with Swift and I give them both kudos for creating another smart song that’s smooth to the ears.

Feel free to check out “right where you left me,” the second bonus track off the deluxe edition of evermore. According to her Instagram post, that track is all about “a girl who stayed forever in the exact spot where her heart was broken, completely frozen in time.”

“Dandelion” by Galantis & JVKE

Swedish EDM group Galantis joins up with rising artist and TikTok star, JVKE in “Dandelion.” This is a song for those who fell in love but was dumped suddenly. The love you had was sadly just a temporary phase much like the life cycle of a real life dandelion flower. Dandelions go from flower to seeds and then disperse away with the wind in a relative short period of time.

See the chart below if you’re curious to see visuals:

Aurally speaking, the song still has an up tempo beat to it despite the heartbreaking verses. Love the overall production of this track. If you love any of Galantis’ previous work such as “Runaway (U & I)” or “Bones feat. OneRepublic,” you’ll likely enjoy this one too. It’s expected that this track will appear on Galantis’ fourth studio album which currently has no release date. Hopefully we will hear more from the hitmakers soon.

As far as JVKE’s talents, I give him props for expanding his career outside the TikTok realm by collaborating with the likes of Galantis. I wonder who he will work with next?!? What direction does he take as he enters his 20s soon? The 19-year-old artist has the potential to be the next Surf Mesa or Surfaces in my opinion.

Visually, the accompanying music video seen above shows JVKE vibing along some trippy backgrounds featuring planets, dandelions, butterflies, dolphins and more! Love the cool graphics and the colors used all throughout! How about you?

This song will definitely be on repeat for a long time! The whistling is soooo infectious! 😃

“Lose Your Head” by London Grammar

Indie pop group, London Grammar released the third track off their upcoming third album, Californian Soil. It’s called “Lose My Head,” and it’s quite an impressive track to hear.

It’s very lofty, ethereal, and pleasant for anybody to hear despite the dark undertones in the lyrics. The song itself is great for easy listening playlists, for those wake up in the morning playlists, meditation session playlists, and sitting by the fireplace kind of playlists!

Lead singer Hannah Reid stands aboard a makeshift sailboat in a sparkly outfit in the music video seen above. I love the use of the shimmery tarp-like fabrics to make it seem like she’s out in the ocean. The color scheme reminds me a lot like Taylor Swift’s Lover artwork.

From 2:45 and on in the video, it gave me chills as Reid gets swept into the proverbial “sea.” From my interpretation, this represents the risks of jumping out of your comfort zone. You don’t know what’s out there. Sometimes it can be rewarding but in this scenario, you’re left struggling. What that struggle truly is can vary depending on the listener.

I highly recommend you give this song by London Grammar a listen. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of their new album when it drops on April 9th!

New Music Friday: December 25

Hello everyone! Merry Christmas to those celebrating today! This week we have another round of amazing songs to go check out. All new music from Grammy-winning pop rock group Coldplay, indie pop band AJR, pop singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, DJ ILLENIUM and producer Dabin feat. Canadian singer-songwriter Lights & rising singer-songwriter Chaz Cardigan. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post for December 25, 2020!

“Flags” by Coldplay

Originally a bonus track on the now Grammy-nominated Everyday Life LP in Japan, “Flags” is finally released for the rest of the world! Coldplay posted on their socials explaining why they released this track earlier this week saying, “we love this song but by the time it came along the spaces on Everyday Life had been filled and we had to socially distance it. Thank you for all the ways you’ve supported us this year. We love & appreciate you more than you could know. Love c, g, w, j & p.”

I, a longtime fan of theirs can agree with that sentiment too! This song is a feel good jam that’s unifying for listeners all around the world despite our continued necessary lockdowns and socially distanced needs. No matter what our country of origin is or what our current residence is, we shouldn’t let others define who you are or what you should be doing in life. We have more in common than we think we do. We can’t let borders divide mankind. Self-love is what we all need! If we can love ourselves, we can in turn love others. In the chorus, lead singer Chris Martin sings, “you don’t need no flags to tell you who you are, so say I just want to be myself.” A great reminder in case anyone needed to hear that this week.

The guys never create a bad song in my opinion and that streak continues with “Flags.” It’s going to sound amazing when they perform this live one day! I hope a music video gets made for this bonus track.

As a side comment, you’re not going to find another mainstream pop song with references to Tchaikovsky or La Varsovienne. A very unique thing for sure, but I digress!

Lastly, I predict this will be performed at a future Global Citizen event or even have some sort of media placement during the rescheduled 2020 Olympics in Tokyo next summer! 😎

“My Play” by AJR

Indie pop band AJR is really feeding their fans this week with fresh announcements, content and more! This past Sunday, the brothers announced the name of their upcoming album will be titled, OK Orchestra, which is set to be dropped next spring, March 26, 2021! Pre-orders are available now! On Monday, they shared what the artwork for their forthcoming fourth studio album will look like. The new song “My Play” was released on Tuesday to the fans’ delight! And tomorrow, a one-of-a-kind virtual concert experience is set to wow them even more in the One Spectacular Night spectacle event! “My Play” will be played for the first time live tomorrow evening along with many of their previous hits and deep cuts from Living Room, The Click & Neotheater.

Going back to discussing this new single…”My Play” will really hit home for many listeners. From my understanding, it delves into children who grew up with divorced parents and the notion of growing up and adapting to the changes in separate households from their POV. It also brings attention to the child’s play or act he/she/they want to showcase in front of their parent(s) as a welcoming distraction. The uniqueness of this play is so special that it’s value can only be experienced once and only once! Otherwise, it loses meaning. Having the parents’ watch you perform is also another element to the whole situation. Do they pay attention? Do they really listen to you speak? It can really make or break how things shape out in terms of family dynamics, for sure!

Later in the song, when lead singer Jack Met sings, “it’s gonna get really, really, really, really bad before it’s okay,” I felt that and I feel for those families out there affected by a divorce or any other life-altering event. For example, you can even correlate that to today with the insanity that 2020 brought to us all and to everyone’s individual life. What the brothers have done was bring us some common ground in being seen by the lyrics while also sparking some hope moving forward. I applaud their candidness and willingness to translate all of that into an exceptionally well-crafted song.

I think that raw emotion will be a driving force on the new record and it’s already best illustrated on the album artwork itself. Ryan is looking towards the lighter side of the road, that’s optimism heading to a new season of life or perhaps the new year overall when we get closer to a post-pandemic world. Jack is in the middle caught in between both ends. That’s like the confusing moment such as now when times are still uncertain with the COVID cases still skyrocketing and yet vaccines are slowly making it’s way around the world. And then there’s a sad Adam on the right side of the road. You can’t help but feel the feels. This end is going to be the songs that represents the really down, bummer moments in life whether that be something from the past as a child or the present day trials and tribulations and in both cases, you think there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully those sad songs are disguised in a up-tempo way much like “Bummerland” was produced.

Overall, I’m excited for the new LP arriving in just 3 months time. I hope I get to see them play live again in 2021 but for now I will be cheering them on virtually tomorrow night for their One Spectacular Night concert event, which will be fun to watch. Definitely have to tune in to the Gary-Cam when “My Play” is played for the first time! Anyways, I’m so thankful for them and all of their hard work they put on to make their fans feel special in a year that’s been so trying. 😊

“Afterglow” by Ed Sheeran

Grammy winner, Ed Sheeran returns to the spotlight after a long hiatus. It’s his first release since Divide came out back in 2017. This new single talks about his wife, Cherry and the eternal love he has for her.

I love this sweet ballad from the 29-year-old singer-songwriter and first-time dad. It’s very heartfelt, genuine and honest. If you’re looking for a song to dedicate to your lover, significant other, what have you, then this song should definitely go on your playlists this week. It would make for a great song to listen to on a date, a song you would play during your first dance at a wedding, or any of your future anniversaries.

I also admire the minimalist aesthetic in the performance video seen above. No fancy bells and whistles required. Just poetic lyrics sung acoustic style. That’s all that’s needed!

Even though this song is a standalone single and won’t be featured in his next record, I’m grateful he gave us something to listen to before this year ends. A wonderful surprise/early Christmas gift. I’m looking forward to whatever he has in store for us in the new year and beyond! How about you? 😊

“Hearts On Fire” by ILLENIUM & Dabin feat. Lights

29-year old going on 30-year-old EDM hitmaker/producer ILLENIUM joins forces with Canadian artists, Dabin and Lights for an epic collaboration! The song talks about a relationship that’s heading in the wrong direction. You were once in love with this person but now as the days, months, and years go on, it seems like you both lost that spark. You start questioning what went wrong? Why have things shifted? Why can’t they read the signs that you give them?

This is the third single released off ILLENIUM’s untitled fourth studio album which is slated to be released some time in 2021. I enjoy Lights’ discography and if you do too, then this is a worthy pick for you to check out. Her vocals on this track really capture the essence of the song’s theme. It’s cathartic to hear and for those listeners out there who have experienced this kind of weird disconnect in a relationship, you will likely feel seen by this song. Overall, I like this hybrid electronic-rock sound they got going on here and if you love electronic music or any of ILLENIUM’s past works, then you’ll likely enjoy this new track as well.

It’d be interesting to see how this song will sound and be played in a live setting once it’s safe to attend concerts again. But for now, you’ll have to enjoy it from the comforts of your home. Turn up the volume! 😃😃😃

“Haircut” by Chaz Cardigan

25-year-old artist, Chaz Cardigan self-released his latest track called “Haircut.” He teased this song in a recent TikTok post which already garnered over 30,000 likes! This alt-rock song is a feel good way to leave 2020 behind and be inspired for exciting changes in the new year.

He talks about life and how the idea of getting a haircut can really change how you look and feel. It’s true from a visual POV that yeah, you will look different in the interim. But it’s more than that too, it symbolizes the evolution you go through in life. It’s a unique path for everyone whether you see that clearly or not. Hopefully this song does make things clear for you. Life isn’t short if you think that way. Life is long and has so many fruitful opportunities. It’s all in the mindset! Make a name for yourself! Do the things that make YOU happy and passionate!

Feel free to add this euphoric song to your playlists this week and let it kickstart a new positive attitude in 2021 and beyond! It will definitely be on loop on mine. 😉

New Music Friday: December 18

As we get closer to the holidays of Christmas and New Year’s, I hope these next highlighted picks bring you some joy this week! There are new songs from 18x Grammy Award winner Paul McCartney, Grammy winning alt-pop solo singer/Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams, rock band Good Charlotte, 2x Grammy winner LeAnn Rimes & multi Grammy-nominated recording artist Jon Batiste. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday for December 18, 2020!

“Find My Way” by Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney is back with the release of his 18th solo studio album, McCartney III. It follows his previous eponymous albums, McCartney and McCartney II released back in 1970 and 1980 respectively. It’s now officially a trilogy set if you think about it.

Once again, the legendary singer-songwriter/producer created this entire album by himself. The only difference this time is that this was made during the quarantine lockdown earlier this year.

It’s cool to see the 78-year-old musician playing all the instruments in the music video seen above. You can tell this was a passion project for him from start to finish. Everything from the vocals to the guitar playing to the drums and even the harpsichord, all of it, it’s a visual and aural delight! It’s a very joyous song that needs to be played for those seeking to relieve the stresses of the week or after a long and hard day’s work.

According to the video’s description the video was directed by Francis Ford Coppola’s son Roman Coppola and “the shoot utilized no less than 46 cameras to capture Paul on every instrument and from every angle, resulting in an unprecedented and intimate glimpse into Paul creating and performing a McCartney III highlight.”

There are 10 additional songs on the new record, so feel free to go check that out this weekend! I enjoyed listening to this experimental album, and I feel Beatles fans and Sir Paul fans alike will do so too!

“Find Me Here” by Hayley Williams

Reflecting on the year that it’s been thus far, we could all use a song like this one from Miss Hayley Williams! This song is part of her latest EP, Petals For Armor: Self Serenades.

It’s soothing to hear this new song where she reminds us all that “long as I’m lovin’ you you’ll never be alone/Long as you keep wanting me around.” It’s true because even though we can’t see all our friends, family members and favorite artists on tour like we use to, the love is still there. The love we have for them will help carry us all through this dark and scary time.

I applaud Williams for putting out one more body of work before the year’s end. It’s like a warm and cozy hug and a very intimate experience for our ears. I’m looking forward to more new music from her in 2021 and from her band Paramore later down the road. How about you?

“Last December” by Good Charlotte

Rock band, Good Charlotte returns to the music scene with a brand new song called “Last December.” It’s been two years since their last release, Generation Rx (2018). A bittersweet music video accompanies the song which deals with the craziness that is 2020 as well as a hint of some hope and joy to carry us into the new year!

Images of closed venues due to the coronavirus lockdown earlier this year are seen. There’s also broken and or boarded up storefronts due to the protests against police brutality and the unjust murder of George Floyd, plus billboards advertising climate change is real and COVID-19 testing sites. It’s very surreal looking back upon those powerful moments. It really seemed like this year would go on and on, seemingly never-ending, but alas we’re in the homestretch part now. Christmas lights are up practically everywhere, and that sliver of normalcy is definitely craved by many. With the vaccines being rolled out across the country as we speak, here’s hoping 2021 will be a better year for everyone. Light is definitely at the end of the tunnel!!

Sonically speaking, this is a very well crafted song from the band whom wanted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album with this release. The lyrics flow seamlessly along the upbeat track. The drumming is simply impeccable.

According to an ALTPRESS interview, lead guitarist Benji Madden said, “The holidays can be a rough time of year. Thinking of the ones we’ve lost and longing for moments that have passed us by is definitely a part of the joy and melancholy.” He added that “for us [it] speaks to both sides of those holiday feelings and we hope it brings some solace to anyone who needs it.”

Overall, it’s great to hear a new GC song before the new year starts. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below.

“Throw My Arms Around The World” by LeAnn Rimes

38-year-old singer-songwriter and 2x Grammy winner, LeAnn Rimes is back with a passionate new song, “Throw My Arms Around The World.” She expressed in a recent tweet that her new single, “is full of passion, hope and sacred rage. I simultaneously dance and cry every time I listen to it. It’s a plea for the world to join me in healing this planet, ourselves and each other.”

Sonically, there’s a lot going on here. It’s such a big production undertaken by a small crew plus Rimes. Props to everyone who worked on this single. Watching the video seen above will make you appreciate the recording process and number of takes it took to put it all together smoothly.

Please put your headphones or earbuds on to get the maximum aural experience! I got a lot of international vibes from this worldwide appealing track such as African and Egyptian sounds. The background vocalists enhances the flow of it all as well. What do you all think? Share your opinions in the comments box down below.

“It’s All Right” by Jon Batiste

The amazing Jon Batiste (3x Grammy-nominated) offers his voice on the upcoming Disney/PIXAR soundtrack, Soul. This track titled, “It’s All Right” is very uplifting and encouraging to listen to. Play this track if you’re feeling sad because it will definitely perk your heart and soul up. Play it also if you want to get an idea of the film’s vibes ahead of time.

The smooth jazzy number is just one of the brilliantly composed tracks off the soundtrack, so you should definitely check out the rest of the album which features tracks from Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as actor Daveed Diggs and neo-soul musician Cody Chesnutt.

Soul will be available to stream on Disney+ on Christmas Day!

New Music Friday: November 20

Hey guys! It’s Friday, November 20, 2020 which means another edition of New Music Friday is here! This week I’m highlighting the following five picks. We’ve got all new music from country artists Chris Young & Kane Brown, a new remix track from Sasha Sloan featuring Charlie Puth. a new collaboration between pop stars Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa, a cool new single from The All-American Rejects, and finally a sweet ballad from rising singer-songwriter Anson Seabra.

“Famous Friends” by Chris Young & Kane Brown

Grammy-nominated country artist, Chris Young has a new jam out now that will leave you in high spirits. He collaborated with one of his best friends for life and fellow country musician himself, Kane Brown! 35-year-old Young and 27-year-old ACM-nominated Brown are little known famous friends. The two have previously worked together on Brown’s song “Setting The Night On Fire” which appeared on his self-titled debut album’s deluxe edition.

In this single, they give a nod to their respective hometowns of Rutherford County, TN and Hamilton County, GA as well as their other shared so-called unofficial hometown, Davidson County, TN. The communities are tight-knit and the friendly residents over there welcome them both with open arms. They’re the ones that the two artists admire. The ordinary, average citizens are those they call their “famous friends” in this case.

The lyric video seen above manifests their names on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next to other famous names like actor Matthew McConaughey and director Ron Howard. Someday, I do believe these two will receive their stars and due respect on the famous Hollywood, California streets.

But for now, please enjoy this feel-good song. It will be played a lot on country radio, for sure!

“Is It Just Me?” by Sasha Sloan featuring Charlie Puth

28-year-old pop singer-songwriter Charlie Puth joins forces on Sasha Sloan’s song, “Is It Just Me?” for a soft soothing anthem. Puth revealed in an Instagram story recently, “I only sing on songs I didn’t write when I wish I wrote them. And this is a song I really wish I wrote. Excited about this one.”

The song discusses various topics that will cause one to say, “is it just me? or am I the only one” who thinks that way. For example, “politicians are annoying,” “I don’t think love lasts forever,” & “the Internet’s obnoxious.”

Sure, some will disagree with some of the lyrics like “the show Friends was overrated,” but plenty will think the same way for other verses and for those reasons, this song will connect to a wide audience. I believe listeners around the world will resonate and enjoy this collaboration effort. Sonically, it’s just pleasing to the ears. Nothing that will drive your anxiety up, nor make you super hyper.

So if you need a new easy listening track for your playlists this weekend, then feel free to add this one!

“Prisoner” by Miley Cyrus feat. Dua Lipa

Pop star Miley Cyrus just released a new single called “Prisoner” with English singer-songwriter, Dua Lipa. This track talks about being stuck in an abusive relationship where you literally cannot leave or else you’ll face some serious backlash from your controlling “boyfriend” or “girlfriend.” You feel trapped like a prisoner, sadly.

Even though the subject matter is quite heavy, the song overall in sound is pretty catchy and the chorus is sung in the style of the 1981 song “Physical” by Olivia Newton John. This continues the theme of 80s influences on Cyrus’ upcoming seventh studio album, Plastic Hearts out November 27th!

If you like dance pop mixed in with some pop-rock elements, then I highly recommend this song for you!

“Me Vs. The World” by The All-American Rejects

AAR is back with all new music in 2020! The rock group with hits like “Gives You Hell,” “Dirty Little Secret” & “Move Along” are paying it forward with this latest single. Proceeds from this song will be going to MusiCares which is helping touring crews across the country impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with necessary relief aid for them and their families.

This song was originally conceived years before the current pandemic that’s raging around the globe as we speak. The original intentions of the song was coming from the perspectives of lead singer, Tyson Ritter, keyboardist/producer Scott Chesak and guitarist Nick Wheeler while working separately for a brief moment in time prior to their most recent EP release last year, Send Her To Heaven. Fast forward to 2020 and the band has finally polished the track off for a very appropriate time.

Now the meaning of the song delves into people who feel like it’s just them vs. the world. The challenges of living in a global pandemic is tough. You feel like day-to-day life is weighing you down like a “monkey on your back.” However despite all that, this song will perk you up and give you that slice of serotonin you need for the day!

It’s very uplifting to hear this rock song from a band that shot to mainstream success in the early 2000s. It has a very nostalgic AAR sound in my opinion and I feel that this is very comforting for those hardcore fans. I also expect this song to usher in new fans to their fanbase moving forward.

“Walked Through Hell” by Anson Seabra

Written and produced by Anson Seabra himself, this song really hits deep. The 26-year-old singer-songwriter wrote a beautiful ballad if I do say so myself. It follows the fan favorite single, “Hurricane” released earlier in July.

In this new song, Seabra talks about a tough breakup that makes you feel like you could’ve put more effort into the relationship to make things work again. Unfortunately, you’re left in the dark again as depicted by this black-and-white music video of Seabra looking down holding onto his shirt with one hand inside clutching onto this chest feeling the emotional pain of said breakup.

If you’ve recently broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend or significant other of many years, then you’ll feel the feels after listening to a song like this one. Even if you didn’t experience a breakup ever, then you can still hear this track. Perhaps, you know a friend or two who recently had a rough breakup, then feel free to send them this song to help get them through this difficult moment in their life. Heartbreak deserves some relief!

Seabra deserves a lot of praise and credit for crafting this track and I encourage you all to go check this one out if you’re into soft pop/alt-pop songs! After that, take a listen to his debut EP album, Songs I Wrote In My Bedroom. It’s only a matter of time for his name to reach mainstream radio levels. Maybe this one will be the catalyst.

New Music Friday: November 6

Feeling stressed this week?!? Take a small break from the election coverage and check out these fantastic music picks this weekend! We’ve got the latest from the legendary Neil Diamond, singer-songwriter BENEE, disco queen Kylie Minogue, Dutch DJ Oliver Heldens & EDM group Party Pupils featuring MAX & pop icons Miley Cyrus & Stevie Nicks. All that and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday for November 6, 2020…

“Sweet Caroline (Classic Diamonds Version)” by Neil Diamond

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame singer-songwriter, Neil Diamond released a fresh new spin to his 1969 classic tune, “Sweet Caroline.” In this version, the London Symphony Orchestra joins him for a harmonious and serendipitous time. It’s very soothing to hear the strings, woodwinds and percussions play the melody all throughout. You still get that cathartic feeling when it gets to the “bum, bum, bum” parts.

In a pandemic consumed year that is 2020, hearing the pre-chorus of “Hands, touchin’ hands/Reachin’ out, touchin’ me, touchin’ you” is a bit triggering to be honest. Human connection has taken a strange road this year.

ICYMI: Check out Diamond’s alternate lyrics for the song which is catered for our COVID world. You’ll get a kick out it for sure.

The 79-year-old legend will be releasing this track among other updated classics such as “Hello Again,” “Song Sung Blue,” and “America” for his upcoming album Classic Diamonds out on November 20th. Check out the teaser trailer, here.

“Happen To Me” by BENEE

New Zealand singer-songwriter, BENEE has a track for all those who have had or are having an existential crisis or just simply tend to overthink things in life. File this track under the “it’s okay to not feel okay” list. You’re not the only one who thinks the way BENEE thinks in her lyrics which talks about mortality and fears. Your feelings of despair are valid so speak them out and let someone you know and love hear you out.

Contemplating the what if’s in life through song arranged in a positive way melodically speaking is comforting to the ears. I commend her for putting this song out for listeners to hear at what’s been an unprecedented and challenging year thus far. I truly think it will resonate with a lot of people.

I give props to the creativity of this imaginative and slightly trippy lyric video seen above. The illustrations and animation are on point. You can check out the work from the respective two artists who made it, here and here.

For those who haven’t heard BENEE before, feel free to see her breakthrough single, “Supalonely.” If you need a cool comparison to convince you to check this track out, I feel like this song is a combination of Billie Eilish’s vibes and Paramore’s essence.

Let me know how you like this song in the comments box below.

“Real Groove” by Kylie Minogue

Dance pop icon Kylie Minogue just dropped her milestone fifteenth studio album, Disco today! One of those songs off said album is called “Real Groove.”

Sonically speaking, this song will have you bumping and dancing and having a good time. Cleanse your soul and rinse away the stresses of the week with this song. You won’t regret it!

Lyrically speaking, the song talks about regretting a breakup. You see your ex dancing with somebody else who appears to be better looking than you and it kind of stings and makes you realize what a major mistake you made.

She sings in the pre-chorus, “Gave my heart a ride, bump in the night/No one can take me higher/Know it’s been a while, baby, a while/Do you still feel the fire?” That question is a call to her ex if he still feels the same way about her despite him moving on. Results may vary in real life if you’re in this situation.

Minogue will be hosting and performing a global livestream concert event to celebrate the release of her latest album. Tickets are available here. Make sure you click on the right region where you live in order to watch. The event will take place tomorrow, Saturday, November 7, 2020!

“Set Me Free” by Oliver Heldens & Party Pupils feat. MAX

The feel good music continues with this fourth pick of the week in “Set Me Free” by house musician Oliver Heldens and Party Pupils featuring pop singer MAX.

The energy of this song is consistently high with a lot of emphasis on the words “set me free.” It’s emotionally freeing to hear those words in an upbeat song like this one in a challenging 2020. MAX’s vocals on this track was the right match for the beats. Towards the 3/4 mark of the song, you’ll hear his signature falsetto which will leave quite the impact on your ears. Good vibes all around!

Put this on your next workout playlist, your next motivational playlist or your dancing in the living room playlist.

So if you need an escape from reality and want to feel like the birds on the single’s artwork, then look no further to this dance pop track today!

“Edge Of Midnight (Midnight Sky Remix)” by Miley Cyrus feat. Stevie Nicks

This is the collaboration I never knew I needed this week! Pop superstar Miley Cyrus joined forces with the equally iconic singer-songwriter and Fleetwood Mac member, Stevie Nicks!

Cyrus sampled and remixed “Edge of Seventeen” by Nicks which appeared on her debut solo album, Bella Donna in 1981, with her recent hit single, “Midnight Sky.” Both on their own charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and now I feel the duo can take this song onto the charts as well!

The verses from both songs mesh really well together in my opinion and will have both fanbases really happy with the overall production of this track. I think this will open more Gen Z listeners to check out 1980s rock music and the older generation to be more open-minded when it comes to pop artists of today like Cyrus’ body of work. A win-win indeed!

I can tell Cyrus looks up to the legendary Nicks and having her do this collaboration must’ve been a dream come true. I predict some day Cyrus will join Nicks and be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame too!

I’m looking forward to hearing more rocker vibes in Cyrus’ forthcoming album, Plastic Hearts which will feature this track and the previously released lead single, “Midnight Sky.” How about you?

New Music Friday: October 30

Happy Halloween weekend everyone! No tricks up my sleeves, only treats! 😉 I’ve got FIVE brand new song picks for you to check out and they’re from pop star Dua Lipa & Belgian singer Angèle, pop band Jonas Brothers, EDM duo The Knocks featuring alternative band Foster The People, rock band Against The Current & French DJ Petit Biscuit. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post for October 30, 2020…

“Fever” by Dua Lipa & Angèle

Pop singer-songwriter Dua Lipa follows the release of her Club Future Nostalgia remix album with a brand new single/collaboration in “Fever.” She teamed up with Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle for a sweltering collaboration.

The song deals with someone madly in love. You’ve fallen head over heels for this person and you can compare it to having a literal fever. It’s that special feeling you get when you lay eyes with somebody attractive. Heartbeats increase. Warm fuzzy feelings. Love galore! XOXOX.

Lipa and Angèle take turns with their amazing vocals expressing the hot sentiments. In the chorus after Lipa sings, “I’vе got a fever, so can you check?/Hand on my forehead, kiss my neck/And when you touch me, baby, I turn red/I’ve got a fever, so can you check?, Angèle expresses fluently, “Car dans mes yeux, ça se voit/La fièvre dans les yeux, oui, ça se voit/Mon cœur se serre, j’ai du feu dans la voix/Le plus souvent, c’est quand je pense à toi” which translates to “Maybe with time it will go away/And yet, and yet, and yet, I can’t see myself/Like a medicine, I am nothing without you/And I know that, I know that I’m wasting time in your arms.”

Hearing the French verses really adds to the potency of the song’s lyrics. I commend them for including them. It wouldn’t have that oomph to it if it was all in English.

Feel free to add this amazing new track if you’re a big fan of love songs, Dua Lipa, and Angèle. It will be appropriate for those fans/listeners out there who have found the love of their life, for Valentine’s Day, for date nights/ or for those feel-good playlists.

“I Need You Christmas” by Jonas Brothers

The Jonas Brothers are ushering in the Christmas/holiday season early this year with their latest tune, “I Need You Christmas.” This piano ballad is an easy listening track filled with warm happy vibes. 2020 has been challenging and tough for everybody. So hearing a Christmas song at this point of the year is comforting. It doesn’t really matter that they released it the day before Halloween because as soon as we hit November 1st, most families will already be in the Christmas spirit.

I can guarantee you this will be a hit with their fans. Accompanying the video seen above, is a photo from when they were kids in matching pajamas on Christmas morning. Isn’t that sweet?!?

Anyways, the lyrics are about priceless childhood memories of Christmas like waiting for Santa, caroling, and opening presents. Now that they’re older and married, they got a different appreciation for the holidays.

They tweeted, “For us this song stirs up memories of childhood snowball fights & finding the nearest hill to sled. It brings us back to spending time with family setting up the Christmas tree. Hopefully it can bring you guys the same feelings of warmth & happiness that creating it brought us.”

Christmas is a special time for making memories with our families so hopefully a tender and soft song like this will spark some holiday joy this season despite the pandemic.

If there is a Christmas in Rockefeller Center special this year via Zoom performances, I predict they will sing this song. Otherwise expect them to promote this single on other holiday concert events on TV/radio later this year. 🎅

“All About You” by The Knocks feat. Foster The People

EDM duo The Knocks have teamed up with Foster The People again following their previous collaborative effort, “Ride Or Die” in 2018.

The band revealed on their Twitter page recently that this song is all “about being lost and finding light in love.”

From my interpretation, it’s about someone who got dumped and now all they can do now is wonder what went wrong, you’re left crushed as to why things couldn’t have continued until eventually you start to see things from your ex’s perspective. Then and only then will you finally understand why the relationship ended the way it did and it’s finally in everyone’s best interest to just move on.

Sonically, it has some cool synths and feel good tambourine playing mixed with some cool beats over layed with FTP’s Mark Foster’s soothing vocals. If you liked their previous collab, “Ride Or Die” or are a big fan of each artist or both, then I believe you will enjoy this single too.

It remains to be seen if this will be part of The Knocks’ next album, but feel free to share your predictions below in the comments box.

“that won’t save us” by Against The Current

Rock group, Against The Current is back with a cathartic new song called “that won’t save us.” It’s their first official release for 2020 which follows their 2019 remixes and stripped live singles for “Almost Forgot,” and “Voices,” respectively.

A lot of pent up anger and frustration gets conveyed in the “that won’t save us” lyrics which delves into a broken relationship. Deep hard hitting questions like, “What did I hear you say?, what’s got you so afraid?, how did we become so numb?, and are you proud of what we’ve come to be?” are posed.

According to an interview from Alternative Press Magazine, lead singer Chrissy Costanza said, “The song points the finger right in your face and says, ‘What you’re doing right now isn’t going to save us. What do you want to do about it? Do you want to keep doing what you’re doing and know this is going to die? Or, are you ready to make a change?'”

So if you’re feeling confused and or conflicted about your current relationship with someone and you can tell things are falling apart, then this song is for you. If you’re looking for a new solid rock song to jam to, then add this one to your playlists.

Costanza’s vocals are A+ and I can’t wait to hear what their next (third) full album will sound like. If you haven’t discover their body of work, I highly recommend you to, especially if you’re a fan of other rock artists like Paramore and Avril Lavigne. I wish there were more female led rock acts out there. Agreed? Share your thoughts below in the comments box.

“Burnin” by Petit Biscuit

20-year-old DJ Petit Biscuit a.k.a. Mehdi Benjelloun just dropped his second studio album, Parachute which includes the latest single, “Burnin.”

According to his description for the song/music video, “Burnin” is a very sensual song…it’s about ambiguity between two friends with benefits… one fell in love and the other one is playing with that ambiguity. Something that happens when you’re very young and innocent and don’t know better.”

Sonically and lyrically, it’s a departure from his 2017 hit “Sunset Lover.” While that track was more layered around one line of lyric, this one contains deeper lyrics about love on top of a consistent but still multi-layered track. What remains the same in both instances, is the upbeat dance pop feeling you get after hearing it.

It’s interesting to see how he matures in the music industry, and I appreciate these new tunes from him. How about you? Do you like the new vibes in Parachute? Which one is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below.

New Music Friday: October 16

Happy Friday!! We’ve made it through another week! I’ve selected five new candidates for your playlists this weekend! Hope you enjoy them. We’ve got the latest from Grammy-nominated artist, Demi Lovato fresh off her world premiere performance at the BBMAs earlier this week, pop singers-songwriters Lauv & Conan Gray with a catchy new anthem, EDM group Louis The Child and their collaboration with alternative rock group COIN, & last but not least DJ/singer/entrepreneur Paris Hilton with her amazing new collab with DJ Lodato.

“Commander In Chief” by Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato follows her strong and emotional post breakup single, “Still Have Me” two weeks ago with another equally strong and emotional song called “Commander In Chief.” She co-wrote this track with none other than FINNEAS, brother to Grammy-winning artist, Billie Eilish and fellow pop singer herself, Julia Michaels.

This time she’s taking a stand against the current administration and POTUS himself. She enlisted several individuals of varying ages, races, and ethnicities to lip sync her evocative message to the President so the whole world can hear. We see everyone from a young Black girl to an older white male with a hat that reads “Make America United Again” to an adult female in a wheelchair mouthing the words: “Commander in Chief, honestly/If I did the things you do/I couldn’t sleep, seriously/Do you even know the truth?/We’re in a state of crisis, people are dyin’/While you line your pockets deep/Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still/Be able to breathe?” Powerful imagery to watch!

The strong chorus references the racial injustices seen earlier this summer and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has tragically killed over 210,000 Americans to this date. Lovato asks how can the President behave like this, so ignorant and heartless, hiding from the protesters, lining his pockets from these tragic events and she wonders, does he really know the truth?!?

She hopes this song will elicit a response from this administration while also enabling a public discussion. With less than three weeks left until Election Day, she’s using this song as a platform to stress the importance of voting.

ICYMI: Demi performed this song for the first time at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards two nights ago. Check it out here:

“Fake” by Lauv & Conan Gray

Singer-songwriter Lauv follows his five-track EP, Without You with a new collaborative effort with fellow pop singer Conan Gray. Gray, in case you didn’t know, is best known for his hit song “Heather” which currently has over 22 million views on YouTube and “Maniac” which has been certified Gold by the RIAA. This is the first time the two artists have worked together on a song.

The two twenty-somethings explore the world of fakeness in this fun new song. Know someone who acts one way to others but totally different towards you? If you have a fake friend or relationship either currently or in the past, then you should definitely check their single out!

They sing in the rather catchy and anthemic chorus, “Man, you’re so f—ing fake (ahh ah)/You don’t mean a single thing you say (ahh ah)/If we’ve got a problem, say it to my face (ahh ah)/And you’re just like all the people that you hate/You’re so fake/When the real you’s back, I’ll pick up my phone.” Through a series of different mini sets they travel from one to another with set production extras providing the props and necessary components for some cool effects alongside including a confetti blaster! It’s such a COVID style music video yet it’s simplicities make for quite an enjoyable video to watch unfold. So kudos to everyone on their respective teams who worked on this production safely during this ongoing pandemic.

“SCAR” by Ashton Irwin

5SOS member, Ashton Irwin is back with another tasting/preview off his upcoming solo album, Superbloom. In “Scar,” Irwin wears his emotions on his sleeves as he sings about mental health in this song. He’s advocating to us that life is filled with so much joy, so many possibilities and just because life hands you lemons, you simply mustn’t give up. The scars we get in life provide lessons for the future not a helpless pit of doom and gloom.

I love the arrangement of this rock song. Love the inclusion of the harps which made the song so unique. The guitar chords have a soothing tone and the drums provided the punch for that maximum effect. The chorus and post-chorus leaves an indelible mark! The bridge leading to the outro was out of this world good! Please turn it up! It’s truly an aural experience.

In a recent tweet the 26-year-old singer-songwriter calls it his “favorite song” off the record. He also describes it as “powerful and raw” adding that it’s “a message to my family, a message for anyone that listens, about perseverance though periods of intense struggle.” His emotional openness is truly commendable!

Like I said the last time I mentioned Ashton Irwin for my picks, I’m excited to hear the rest of his album and him sharing his story/journey for listeners all around the world!

“Self Care” by Louis The Child & COIN

EDM group Louis The Child has teamed up with alternative rock group COIN for the first time. In this upbeat dance track, the two groups are preaching the importance of self care.

“I do it for myself/I’m dancin’ for no one else/I do it for myself, baby/Ah-ah, ah-ah-ah, ah, ah.” The chorus really strikes a chord because if you’re feeling like you’re energies have been exhausted as of late or been absorbed by others and not yourself, then you need to listen to these lines and the song as a whole. It will definitely give you a wake up call to say, ‘hey, listen, I’m important too. I deserve the rest. I deserve a break. I deserve to be happy too. I deserve to be appreciated for the things I do in life!’ The list goes on!!

See the accompanying music video above for some feel good vibes as the two groups and some interpretive dancers just let loose and have fun in a desert!

“I Blame You” by Paris Hilton

Credit: @ParisHilton

Call it a comeback single, but really, has Paris Hilton really left? Hilton dropped this surprise new dance track and it’s all about love despite the song title, “I Blame You.”

“I feel good, I feel good. I blame you, I blame you.” Those simple lines get repeated in such a way that you can’t help but say, ‘wow, this really makes me feel happy and positive in life.’

So if you’re feeling like you met your better half or just have a really close friend and or family member, then this song is for you! They bring the joy and sunshine to your life and you can credit them for changing your perspective on life especially if you’ve had a troubled past, or a rough patch in a previous relationship, or even something as trivial as receiving a bad grade in school. It doesn’t define you forever.

DJ Lodato really sets the mood for this track and I want to say he mixed it excellently with the entertainer/entrepreneur’s dreamy vocals.

Paris shared in a recent Instagram post that proceeds from this song will go to Breaking Code Silence, a “movement organized by a network of survivors and advocates to raise awareness of the abuses in the troubled teen industry.”

Hilton recently released her eye-opening YouTube documentary which dives deeper into her life story from her childhood to present day. In this doc, she details for the first time publicly, the verbal, psychological and physical abuse she endured when she was sent to Provo Canyon School when she was a teenager. Watch her YouTube Original documentary, This Is Paris, here. You can’t help after watching this, to support Paris Hilton. Virtual hugs all around!

Now she’s standing up and raising awareness for the survivors in support of closing down that institution. Feel free to sign her Change.org petition.
