New Music Friday: January 22

It’s Friday, January 22, 2021 and another New Music Friday post has arrived for you to go check out! The following FIVE picks are ones that I highly recommend this week and they’re from alternative pop singer Tate McRae, pop rock band Weezer, house music duo Silk City feat. Ellie Goulding, pop singer Sabrina Carpenter & EDM artist 3lau w/ Norwegian DJ Funkin Matt & featured rising vocalist Frawley!

“rubberband” by Tate McRae

17-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae continues to impress following her smash hit, “you broke me first” from last year. In “rubberband,” she talks about having regrets about a relationship.

She posted in the above video’s description that “snapping a rubberband is a way to get over something…. sometimes even a person. this song means a lot to me, i hope you guys love it.”

If you already broke up with the person you once dated and now have a ton of questions surrounding said breakup, then first off, you’re not the only one, and secondly, this song is suited for you to hear!

McRae really captures the essence of the struggle of post-breakup(s) in her choreographed moves. I appreciate her efforts for being vulnerable in crafting this song for her fans.

I predict this song will be a hit with the TikTok crowd. Young fans will likely be creating lip-synced videos of them snapping a rubber band (hopefully not too hard) on their wrists, as well as replicating her talented dance moves in their own creative clips.

It’s expected that this song will be a part of the young musician’s next EP which will drop later this year.

“All My Favorite Songs” by Weezer

Grammy-winning rock band, Weezer returns with surprise news of a new album not named Van Weezer. That album was suppose to drop last year to coincide with their coheadlining tour, the Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Green Day, but has since been pushed to May 2021. Instead, they are going ahead and calling this new project, OK Human their new fourteenth studio album. The lead single, “All My Favorite Songs,” is out now and the video stars the band alongside fellow actor Sonny Golden (Modern Family), and actress/dancer Monroe Cline as they teeter in and out of the virtual and reality worlds in the music video.

Sonically, it’s an upbeat jam but lyrically it contradicts all the happiness. You might take it from a quarantine perspective because the pandemic has messed with our overall mental health over the past year and our plans have been altered or been put on pause. So it’s okay to feel disappointed by the crisis. It’s a natural human instinct. It makes one think, at least from my own thoughts, would this album be made or even sound like this if it weren’t for the pandemic?!? Sometimes there are hidden blessings behind a dark moment in time such as this one and also as evident by the ending of the music video where Golden’s character meets someone new online a.k.a. Cline’s character and eventually befriends her.

The album, OK Human is a reference to fellow Grammy-winning rock group Radiohead and their 1997 album, OK Computer. The band posted on their socials a little background info about the album citing it “was made at a time when humans-playing-instruments was a thing of the past. All we could do is look back on ancient times when humans really mattered and when the dark tech-takeover fantasy didn’t exist.” The instruments they used were tuned to the ’60s and 70’s styles and with the orchestra sounding like the 18th and 19th centuries. They added, “we had no click track or loops or hi-tech sounds. Not even an electric guitar.”

There will be a total of 12 new tracks, including this one, on the new record. Are you excited for two Weezer albums this year? Let me know in the comments below!

“New Love” by Silk City feat. Ellie Goulding

Need a new dance track to add to your playlists this week? Then you’re in luck! Look no further to house music duo, Silk City’s latest collaboration with fellow pop singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. This track follows the group’s 2019 Platinum-certified hit “Electricity” with Dua Lipa.

In the music video for “New Love,” Goulding is seen singing and owning the stage with a big perm and donning trendy 1980s fashion! This is such a feel-good track that will have you dancing on your own living room floor! It will definitely raise your spirits/mood.

Lyrically, the song takes pride in showcasing the renewed self-love one has developed in their life. This could also branch out into overall self-image, body positivity and self-esteem as well as self-acceptance.

I give props to multi-Grammy winners Mark Ronson and Diplo, the masterminds behind this musical project. It’s another excellently produced single from them and having Goulding as their featured artist was the right choice!

Who knows?!? This could very well be eligible for numerous awards and accolades this year and in next year’s Grammy Awards! Thoughts?

“Skin” by Sabrina Carpenter

21-year-old singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter now signed under Island Records released her response track to the love triangle drama between her, actor Joshua Bassett (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) and Olivia Rodrigo (HSMTMTS.) Rodrigo’s “driver’s license” has seen a surge in mainstream popularity and success this month so it’s only fitting that Carpenter shared her side of the story.

Carpenter talks about how she’s happy with her relationship with Bassett and that Rodrigo shouldn’t “drive [herself] insane” about their romance. They could be friends but she doesn’t see they could even if they were to pretend to in another life. You can’t get under her skin while he’s on hers.

Overall, this is a fiery track and I applaud Carpenter’s candidness in telling her side of the story with her carefully crafted verses. She’s definitely showing her confidence and ability to not let others tell her how to feel. Expect this track to contend on the charts in the days and weeks to come.

As the songstress sings in the bridge, “I just hope that one day/We both can laugh about it/When it’s not in our face.” Hopefully this drama will get resolved publicly and they can remain at peace one day. At the end of the day, we should leave it up to the artists themselves to settle it and not let the fans misconstrue all the facts. Please be kind in their respective comments sections of their social media posts. 🙏

“Everything” by 3lau & Funkin Matt feat. Frawley

Singer-songwriter Frawley joins 3lau & Funkin Matt’s latest collaborative project in “Everything.” This is an up-tempo song that talks about the fake love one can detect in an ex-lover.

You know they’re lying to you and even they know they’re lying to you despite showing up at your doorstep trying to convince you to date them again.

Frawley’s vocals are solid on this track and this song in my opinion has what it takes to be a really big dance/club hit in 2021!

3lau is promoting his new single in the world of NFT or Nifty Gateway, a blockchain powered world where you can earn cool collectibles. Read this article to get a better understanding of this innovative technology.

He also started the “Everything” scholarship which is open to any high school or undergraduate student. Check that out here.

New Music Friday: January 15

It’s New Music Friday once more on this Friday, January the 15th, 2021! This week’s song picks include the latest from pop boy band Why Don’t We, country superstars Tim McGraw & Tyler Hubbard, pop star/actress Selena Gomez, country pop singer-songwriter Hunter Hayes & last but not least recording artist, Greyson Chance. Scroll down to read all about them! 😃

“Grey” by Why Don’t We

Pop band, Why Don’t We’s most ambitious effort yet, The Good Times and The Bad Ones is finally out for the fans to hear! The piano ballad, “Grey” is for those who feel a sense of regret for breaking up with one’s boyfriend/girlfriend/relationship.

It’s truly a tragic moment if one experiences this in their life and now all they can do is beg for forgiveness. The guys’ vocals have really matured in this era and I love the accompanying strings seen in the background for the performance video seen above.

You can really feel their emotions pouring out through these well-crafted verses especially in the chorus when all five members croon:

Tears and slamming doors
I’m falling, down on the floor
Begging, begging, please
You don’t want me no more
I never hurt like this before
I’m begging, begging, please
Now every day it rains
And I’m the one to blame
Baby, I walked away
When you came to stay
Oh, now everything’s grey

The many months of planning, writing and recording, plus editing must’ve been a tiring yet rewarding experience for the group. I really appreciate their dedication to writing this whole album by themselves this time around and now they can look forward to performing the tracks when they go on tour after the pandemic — hopefully later this year!

What’s your favorite song on the new album? Share your responses in the comments box below!

Lastly, be sure to check out their GMA interview & performance of “Slow Down” here. Fun Fact: They got to sample the Smashing Pumpkins’ hit song, “1979.” 😎

“Undivided” by Tim McGraw & Tyler Hubbard

Tyler Hubbard of Grammy-nominated country duo Florida Georgia Line teamed up with country legend and 3x Grammy-winner, Tim McGraw for a feel-good duet song that calls for unity over division.

In this very divisive time in America as we speak, we could all use this moment to reflect and hope for a better future. This song is a welcome distraction from all the negative news headlines we’ve witnessed on our TV’s and phones.

In a CBS This Morning interview, Hubbard revealed in regards to this song, “I didn’t think we could need it any more than we needed it last year, but apparently we still do.” Little would they know the tragic events of the Capitol coup last week because this song was conceived and recorded last year during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and the marches against racial injustices.

“The song — it speaks to more of the social contract that we have with each other. It’s not about politics. It’s about how we’re supposed to treat each other,” McGraw shared.

He also tweeted, “My wish is that y’all can hear the hope in this one!!”

I myself believe that this song could not have come out at a more relevant time. So please give this song a listen this week and also feel free to check out the two country stars sing together in the black-and-white styled video attached above.

It won’t change things drastically but at least it will help warm your heart and soul. It will also serve everyone a reminder that kindness counts!

“De Una Vez” by Selena Gomez

Pop singer-songwriter Selena Gomez returns to the spotlight with an all Spanish single called “De Una Vez” or “At Once” in English. It’s just the second all Spanish track since her 2010 release, “Un Año Sin Lluvia.”

This song follows the release of “Ice Cream,” her collaboration with K-pop girl group BLACKPINK last summer. “De Una Vez” is the first song slated to appear on her upcoming untitled fourth studio album.

This was something Gomez wanted to do as she revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music. “I’m so proud of my heritage.” With all the division going on in the world, she called it “perfect timing” in releasing this project out now. “There’s something about Latin music that, globally, just makes people feel things.”

Lyrically speaking, the 28-year-old songstress talks about overcoming heartbreak and being strong and resilient moving forward being single. This love song is beautifully composed and I’m glad she sung this in Spanish rather than English because the verses flow better en español and she’s showcasing her diverse talents and heritage in true authentic fashion.

If you’re still interested in seeing the English translations, feel free to click here. For more about the visuals in the music video and the creative process behind it, check out this Vogue article.

Meantime, Gomez is a busy woman in 2021. While busy recording new music, she’s also set to release season 2 of her cooking show, Selena + Chef on HBO MAX on January 21st. She will also be returning to her acting roots in a new Hulu comedy series, Only Murders in the Building starring alongside actors Martin Short and Steve Martin.

“The One That Got Away” by Hunter Hayes

29-year-old country-pop artist Hunter Hayes is back with an all-new upbeat single titled, “The One That Got Away.” It’s the first track released from his upcoming album, Red Sky which is set to drop later this summer.

This is a song for those who broke free from a bad relationship and can see themselves on the path of freedom. Instead of being down in the dumps about this heartbreak, Hayes is seen dancing alone looking relieved and happily cruising solo in a cool car free from the troubles of the past. Watch the video for picturesque countryside footage, some sunny desert footage and some amazing aerial drone shots.

He debuted the song on national TV earlier this week on ABC’s Good Morning America. Check out his performance, right here. He also gave a little preview at what his next album’s theme will be about, citing it’s about “moving on and self-discovery and growth and change.”

On Instagram, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter shared his appreciation for the important and integral people who helped brought this project to life:

Putting the song out for the world to hear really means a lot to him and he shared he cannot wait to perform this for the fans soon.

Are you looking forward to more Hunter Hayes music this year? Let me know in the comments below.

“Holy Feeling” by Greyson Chance

Greyson Chance dropped his first single for 2021 and it’s quite an impressive track! From my interpretation, it’s about loving somebody but they’re not necessarily on the same page or level as you…yet. You want them to commit more to you so you can both feel like you’re floating on cloud 9 a.k.a. that godly, holy feeling. That eternal love that only true loving relationships can feel and know.

2020 was a challenging year for the musician and he shared on Twitter all about the struggle to put pen and paper to make music and how releasing “Holy Feeling” in 2021 is a fresh start with renewed hope and vision for him moving forward:

He said the new song brought color back into his life, sparking that “joy of singing for you, of sharing my story with you.”

I’m enjoying the direction of his sound based on this new single and I highly anticipate more music to be dropped this year in the form a full album that will channel deeper into his poetic mind.

Check out his exclusive YouTube acoustic performance of the song, right here:

New Music Friday: January 8

Happy Friday! It’s January 8, 2021 and this week we got five amazing picks for you to check out. There’s fresh tracks from pop star Zayn, Grammy-winning rock band Kings Of Leon, 10x Grammy winner Taylor Swift, Grammy-nominated EDM duo Galantis with TikTok star JVKE & indie pop band London Grammar. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post here at Philip’s Music Corner.

“Vibez” by ZAYN

27-year-old singer-songwriter Zayn Malik released his latest single “Vibez,” which is the first for this year and follows last year’s release, “Better.” His highly-anticipated new album, Nobody Is Listening drops next Friday. In this song, he’s just straight up vibing (pun intended) with his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. But for listeners/fans alike, the sensual feelings can be directed to your own respective lover. I thought the song’s lyrics were carefully thought out. It’s very intimate, passionate, and will fuel future healthy love-making sessions for days to come. A snippet of the chorus goes like this:

Don’t keep me waiting
I’ve been waiting all night to get closer
Yeah, you already know I got it for you
You know the vibes, know the vibes, put it on ya
If it movin’ too fast, we go slower

The music video opens up in a theater as if we were watching a Broadway play. It starts off with Zayn alone in a bedroom then he gets up to go for a drive in a mock mini car. It then cuts to Zayn on a treadmill walking through an imaginary forest filled with fireflies surrounding him then cuts to him on a boat named the S.S. Malik. He meets a friendly whale then goes back on land to sit on a couch which transitions back to the bedroom with another clone of Zayn watching from the theater seats. Very imaginative and an interestingly produced video. The description for the video recommends you to watch and listen to the video via headphones for a more immersive experience. How do you like the video? Share your feedback in the comments below.

Anyways, this song would make a perfect choice for your Valentine’s playlist(s) this year and beyond. It also would work well for your date night playlists. Enjoy!

You can expect a total of 11 tracks to be a part of the first time dad’s new album. Also, expect tour dates to be released once the pandemic clears. Visit his official website to stay updated on all the latest news.

“The Bandit” by Kings Of Leon

Nashville-based rock band Kings of Leon have emerged from their five year long hiatus this week with the announcement that their upcoming eighth studio album titled, When You See Yourself will be releasing on March 5th. Two new singles dropped yesterday afternoon giving fans a sampling at what’s to come.

There will be 11 new tracks on the new record. Lead single, “The Bandit” is what I would like to highlight this week. This black-and-white music video shows the band jamming out to the rocking new track. It’s another solid song from the Grammy-winning band if I do say so myself. I love the guitar melody/chord progressions. It really drives the song’s lyrics and Caleb Followill’s leading vocals.

This track was produced by Markus Dravs. For those who don’t know who Dravs is, he helped produced hit songs like “Paradise,” and “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay as well as “The Suburbs,” and “Reflektor” by Arcade Fire just to name a few.

On KOL’s Twitter page, they released the full track list plus the album art and in case you wanted to know how those look like, feel free to click here.

“it’s time to go” by Taylor Swift

Alas, the bonus tracks off Taylor Swift’s latest album, evermore are out! “it’s time to go” is about her past relationship with her old record label, Big Machine Label Group and the recent public drama surrounding her masters of her first six albums which were acquired by Scooter Braun and then later sold for profits without her consent. As we speak, she’s in the process of re-recording all her old albums so that she can claim the upper-hand again.

It’s also about when you have that gut feeling to leave, you have to listen to yourself and do so. It’s not a weak move, rather it’s the opposite as the 31-year-old sings, “Sometimes giving up is the strong thing/Sometimes to run is the brave thing/Sometimes walking out is the one thing/That will find you the right thing.”

This can also apply to a dead end job, a bad boss, a sour relationship with a friend, partner, etc. You know when your time is up in these situations and you have to cut them out of your life.

Sonically speaking, the track fits well with evermore‘s overall aesthetic. The National’s Aaron Dessner once again helped co-wrote the track with Swift and I give them both kudos for creating another smart song that’s smooth to the ears.

Feel free to check out “right where you left me,” the second bonus track off the deluxe edition of evermore. According to her Instagram post, that track is all about “a girl who stayed forever in the exact spot where her heart was broken, completely frozen in time.”

“Dandelion” by Galantis & JVKE

Swedish EDM group Galantis joins up with rising artist and TikTok star, JVKE in “Dandelion.” This is a song for those who fell in love but was dumped suddenly. The love you had was sadly just a temporary phase much like the life cycle of a real life dandelion flower. Dandelions go from flower to seeds and then disperse away with the wind in a relative short period of time.

See the chart below if you’re curious to see visuals:

Aurally speaking, the song still has an up tempo beat to it despite the heartbreaking verses. Love the overall production of this track. If you love any of Galantis’ previous work such as “Runaway (U & I)” or “Bones feat. OneRepublic,” you’ll likely enjoy this one too. It’s expected that this track will appear on Galantis’ fourth studio album which currently has no release date. Hopefully we will hear more from the hitmakers soon.

As far as JVKE’s talents, I give him props for expanding his career outside the TikTok realm by collaborating with the likes of Galantis. I wonder who he will work with next?!? What direction does he take as he enters his 20s soon? The 19-year-old artist has the potential to be the next Surf Mesa or Surfaces in my opinion.

Visually, the accompanying music video seen above shows JVKE vibing along some trippy backgrounds featuring planets, dandelions, butterflies, dolphins and more! Love the cool graphics and the colors used all throughout! How about you?

This song will definitely be on repeat for a long time! The whistling is soooo infectious! 😃

“Lose Your Head” by London Grammar

Indie pop group, London Grammar released the third track off their upcoming third album, Californian Soil. It’s called “Lose My Head,” and it’s quite an impressive track to hear.

It’s very lofty, ethereal, and pleasant for anybody to hear despite the dark undertones in the lyrics. The song itself is great for easy listening playlists, for those wake up in the morning playlists, meditation session playlists, and sitting by the fireplace kind of playlists!

Lead singer Hannah Reid stands aboard a makeshift sailboat in a sparkly outfit in the music video seen above. I love the use of the shimmery tarp-like fabrics to make it seem like she’s out in the ocean. The color scheme reminds me a lot like Taylor Swift’s Lover artwork.

From 2:45 and on in the video, it gave me chills as Reid gets swept into the proverbial “sea.” From my interpretation, this represents the risks of jumping out of your comfort zone. You don’t know what’s out there. Sometimes it can be rewarding but in this scenario, you’re left struggling. What that struggle truly is can vary depending on the listener.

I highly recommend you give this song by London Grammar a listen. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of their new album when it drops on April 9th!

New Music Friday: January 1

Happy New Year!! 2021 is finally here! Kicking off the new month and year are these five picks. We’ve got the latest from pop singers Lauv, Aly & AJ, dance pop phenoms Kylie Minogue and Dua Lipa, Grammy-winning English artist Jacob Collier & alternative artist Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post for January 1, 2021.

“2021” by Lauv

Pop singer-songwriter Lauv gave one more song for the fans on New Year’s Eve to help end 2020 on a higher note. This song is an ode to a fresh start in 2021. One where you’re going to do your best to elevate your love life, to be more attentive to their needs, wants, wishes, etc. This is for all the guys and girls out there who want to continue dating their love of their life and nobody else.

Sonically, I feel it fits the current vibes of mainstream radio and I feel like this could be the next hit song for the 26-year-old artist. If not on radio, I predict this will be a heavily used song on TikTok with fans lip-syncing or dancing to the track. It’s definitely a different sound from him compared with his first album, ~how i’m feeling~. “2021” is like hip-hop meets pop meets EDM.

I expect a corresponding music video to be released soon but if not I’m still looking forward to hearing more tunes from him as the months go on. How about you? Maybe a new EP or even a second studio album is in the works! Drop your predictions in the comments below.

Check out Lauv’s official merch store, right here. His touring dates for later this fall are available here. He will be making stops in New Zealand, Australia & Jakarta. Singer-songwriter Jeremy Zucker will be joining him as his opening act. Hopefully more dates will be added after the pandemic in other parts of the world including North America.

In the meantime…

“Potential Breakup Song” by Aly & AJ

Due to the rise in popularity of their 2007 Platinum-selling single, “Potential Breakup Song” on TikTok, the ladies of music duo Aly & AJ have re-recorded it for a new generation of listeners. This also serves as a nostalgic trip for those who discovered them and adored them over a decade ago.

This is not for the children as they’ve added expletives in the song. Sonically, this track has definitely gotten a whole new edge and a fresh new sound. I feel it’s sassier than the original and fitting for those who are currently experiencing or had experienced a one-sided relationship or multiple. Thoughts?

Play this song if you want to warn your boyfriend or girlfriend to step up or else the days of you dating them are being numbered.

If you want to hear the clean version, click here. If you want to hear the original version from 14 years ago, then click here. Watch the performance above for a “Slow Dancing”/ “PBS” jam session! It aired on New Year’s Eve online for you guessed it, TikTok! Enjoy!

Prior to that epic performance, they proposed to their fans on Twitter, the idea of re-imagining their other hit song, “Like Whoa.” Commenters seemed to be onboard with that suggestion with some requesting the whole Insomniatic album to get the explicit treatment. Click on the tweet below to see all of their positive reactions.

Would you like to see this come to fruition? Let me know in the comments box below.

“Real Groove – Studio 2054 Remix” by Kylie Minogue & Dua Lipa

Get up on your dancing shoes for this remix of Kylie Minogue’s hit song “Real Groove.” 2x Grammy-winning artist, Dua Lipa joins her dance pop track for an epic collaboration that fans will be buzzing about. With the rise in stardom for Lipa in 2020 in her Gold-certified Future Nostalgia album release, this remix makes perfect sense to be dropped for the world to hear.

This track is for all those dance lovers, Minogue and Dua Lipa lovers, 80’s disco-lovers and everyone else in between! A perfect distraction from the stresses of the day.

Check out my original post featuring “Real Groove” by clicking here. The song is featured on her latest album, Disco which ranked in the top 10 on Billboard’s Best Dance Albums of 2020 as well as the top 10 on Variety’s Best Albums of 2020.

“The Sun Is In Your Eyes” by Jacob Collier

Grammy-winning artist Jacob Collier kickstarts 2021 with a short and sweet stripped down style single, “The Sun Is In Your Eyes.” The 26-year-old explained in the description in the video seen above, “Here’s a song I wrote last year! I recorded it on my phone for safe-keeping. [Now] it’s yours to keep.”

A nice gift for fans of his for the new year! I enjoy the laid-back vibes on this love song which talks about the beauty of your significant other. Their eyes are like sunshine to you, their smile is refreshing like a glass of cold water, and their lips are like golden treasure. Very poetic if I do say so myself. Thoughts?

No matter where life takes you, the love you have for him/her/them is unconditional. I love how it’s capped off in the ending of the song, when he sings, “I see you clearly now/I hold you dearly now/The sun is in my eyes.” It went from their eyes to now his eyes, so that I feel encapsulates the overall and genuine affectionate feelings he has for his lover.

2021 will hopefully be a brighter year for many, and I’m eager to hear more from Collier later this year. Check out Jacob’s merch store, right here. Stay updated with his official website, here. It includes a list of 91 cities he’s promising to tour in once the pandemic is over and concerts can run safely for the fans.

“New Year Song” by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness

My last pick of the week is from none other than Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. He expressed how difficult 2020 was for him saying, “I’ve been on this earth a fair amount of years, most of them I’d count myself lucky while a handful have been quite challenging. If I’ve learned anything, they sneak up on you, the hard years, and this one was no exception.”

As December 2020 came to a close he found inspiration to create this hopeful new song just in time for 2021! He shared that the song was born on a piano at 4th Street in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. A snippet from the above video’s description reads as follows:

“Wherever this song finds you in life, whether you feel inclined to skip it or listen on repeat, I send it on with the sincere hope that whatever hardships and beauty you’ve encountered this year. you find half the hardship and twice as much beauty in the next.”

Aurally speaking, this is such a feel good song filled with optimism and warm wishes moving forward as we begin 2021. I thought the piano melody was beautifully composed. By 2:10, you will likely get goosebumps! Credits to Suzy Shinn for helping him produce this amazing track.

So here’s to a new year that we can all picture together that should be and hopefully will be brighter, one with brand new opportunities, pathways, and memories being made.

New Music Friday: December 25

Hello everyone! Merry Christmas to those celebrating today! This week we have another round of amazing songs to go check out. All new music from Grammy-winning pop rock group Coldplay, indie pop band AJR, pop singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, DJ ILLENIUM and producer Dabin feat. Canadian singer-songwriter Lights & rising singer-songwriter Chaz Cardigan. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday post for December 25, 2020!

“Flags” by Coldplay

Originally a bonus track on the now Grammy-nominated Everyday Life LP in Japan, “Flags” is finally released for the rest of the world! Coldplay posted on their socials explaining why they released this track earlier this week saying, “we love this song but by the time it came along the spaces on Everyday Life had been filled and we had to socially distance it. Thank you for all the ways you’ve supported us this year. We love & appreciate you more than you could know. Love c, g, w, j & p.”

I, a longtime fan of theirs can agree with that sentiment too! This song is a feel good jam that’s unifying for listeners all around the world despite our continued necessary lockdowns and socially distanced needs. No matter what our country of origin is or what our current residence is, we shouldn’t let others define who you are or what you should be doing in life. We have more in common than we think we do. We can’t let borders divide mankind. Self-love is what we all need! If we can love ourselves, we can in turn love others. In the chorus, lead singer Chris Martin sings, “you don’t need no flags to tell you who you are, so say I just want to be myself.” A great reminder in case anyone needed to hear that this week.

The guys never create a bad song in my opinion and that streak continues with “Flags.” It’s going to sound amazing when they perform this live one day! I hope a music video gets made for this bonus track.

As a side comment, you’re not going to find another mainstream pop song with references to Tchaikovsky or La Varsovienne. A very unique thing for sure, but I digress!

Lastly, I predict this will be performed at a future Global Citizen event or even have some sort of media placement during the rescheduled 2020 Olympics in Tokyo next summer! 😎

“My Play” by AJR

Indie pop band AJR is really feeding their fans this week with fresh announcements, content and more! This past Sunday, the brothers announced the name of their upcoming album will be titled, OK Orchestra, which is set to be dropped next spring, March 26, 2021! Pre-orders are available now! On Monday, they shared what the artwork for their forthcoming fourth studio album will look like. The new song “My Play” was released on Tuesday to the fans’ delight! And tomorrow, a one-of-a-kind virtual concert experience is set to wow them even more in the One Spectacular Night spectacle event! “My Play” will be played for the first time live tomorrow evening along with many of their previous hits and deep cuts from Living Room, The Click & Neotheater.

Going back to discussing this new single…”My Play” will really hit home for many listeners. From my understanding, it delves into children who grew up with divorced parents and the notion of growing up and adapting to the changes in separate households from their POV. It also brings attention to the child’s play or act he/she/they want to showcase in front of their parent(s) as a welcoming distraction. The uniqueness of this play is so special that it’s value can only be experienced once and only once! Otherwise, it loses meaning. Having the parents’ watch you perform is also another element to the whole situation. Do they pay attention? Do they really listen to you speak? It can really make or break how things shape out in terms of family dynamics, for sure!

Later in the song, when lead singer Jack Met sings, “it’s gonna get really, really, really, really bad before it’s okay,” I felt that and I feel for those families out there affected by a divorce or any other life-altering event. For example, you can even correlate that to today with the insanity that 2020 brought to us all and to everyone’s individual life. What the brothers have done was bring us some common ground in being seen by the lyrics while also sparking some hope moving forward. I applaud their candidness and willingness to translate all of that into an exceptionally well-crafted song.

I think that raw emotion will be a driving force on the new record and it’s already best illustrated on the album artwork itself. Ryan is looking towards the lighter side of the road, that’s optimism heading to a new season of life or perhaps the new year overall when we get closer to a post-pandemic world. Jack is in the middle caught in between both ends. That’s like the confusing moment such as now when times are still uncertain with the COVID cases still skyrocketing and yet vaccines are slowly making it’s way around the world. And then there’s a sad Adam on the right side of the road. You can’t help but feel the feels. This end is going to be the songs that represents the really down, bummer moments in life whether that be something from the past as a child or the present day trials and tribulations and in both cases, you think there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully those sad songs are disguised in a up-tempo way much like “Bummerland” was produced.

Overall, I’m excited for the new LP arriving in just 3 months time. I hope I get to see them play live again in 2021 but for now I will be cheering them on virtually tomorrow night for their One Spectacular Night concert event, which will be fun to watch. Definitely have to tune in to the Gary-Cam when “My Play” is played for the first time! Anyways, I’m so thankful for them and all of their hard work they put on to make their fans feel special in a year that’s been so trying. 😊

“Afterglow” by Ed Sheeran

Grammy winner, Ed Sheeran returns to the spotlight after a long hiatus. It’s his first release since Divide came out back in 2017. This new single talks about his wife, Cherry and the eternal love he has for her.

I love this sweet ballad from the 29-year-old singer-songwriter and first-time dad. It’s very heartfelt, genuine and honest. If you’re looking for a song to dedicate to your lover, significant other, what have you, then this song should definitely go on your playlists this week. It would make for a great song to listen to on a date, a song you would play during your first dance at a wedding, or any of your future anniversaries.

I also admire the minimalist aesthetic in the performance video seen above. No fancy bells and whistles required. Just poetic lyrics sung acoustic style. That’s all that’s needed!

Even though this song is a standalone single and won’t be featured in his next record, I’m grateful he gave us something to listen to before this year ends. A wonderful surprise/early Christmas gift. I’m looking forward to whatever he has in store for us in the new year and beyond! How about you? 😊

“Hearts On Fire” by ILLENIUM & Dabin feat. Lights

29-year old going on 30-year-old EDM hitmaker/producer ILLENIUM joins forces with Canadian artists, Dabin and Lights for an epic collaboration! The song talks about a relationship that’s heading in the wrong direction. You were once in love with this person but now as the days, months, and years go on, it seems like you both lost that spark. You start questioning what went wrong? Why have things shifted? Why can’t they read the signs that you give them?

This is the third single released off ILLENIUM’s untitled fourth studio album which is slated to be released some time in 2021. I enjoy Lights’ discography and if you do too, then this is a worthy pick for you to check out. Her vocals on this track really capture the essence of the song’s theme. It’s cathartic to hear and for those listeners out there who have experienced this kind of weird disconnect in a relationship, you will likely feel seen by this song. Overall, I like this hybrid electronic-rock sound they got going on here and if you love electronic music or any of ILLENIUM’s past works, then you’ll likely enjoy this new track as well.

It’d be interesting to see how this song will sound and be played in a live setting once it’s safe to attend concerts again. But for now, you’ll have to enjoy it from the comforts of your home. Turn up the volume! 😃😃😃

“Haircut” by Chaz Cardigan

25-year-old artist, Chaz Cardigan self-released his latest track called “Haircut.” He teased this song in a recent TikTok post which already garnered over 30,000 likes! This alt-rock song is a feel good way to leave 2020 behind and be inspired for exciting changes in the new year.

He talks about life and how the idea of getting a haircut can really change how you look and feel. It’s true from a visual POV that yeah, you will look different in the interim. But it’s more than that too, it symbolizes the evolution you go through in life. It’s a unique path for everyone whether you see that clearly or not. Hopefully this song does make things clear for you. Life isn’t short if you think that way. Life is long and has so many fruitful opportunities. It’s all in the mindset! Make a name for yourself! Do the things that make YOU happy and passionate!

Feel free to add this euphoric song to your playlists this week and let it kickstart a new positive attitude in 2021 and beyond! It will definitely be on loop on mine. 😉

New Music Friday: December 18

As we get closer to the holidays of Christmas and New Year’s, I hope these next highlighted picks bring you some joy this week! There are new songs from 18x Grammy Award winner Paul McCartney, Grammy winning alt-pop solo singer/Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams, rock band Good Charlotte, 2x Grammy winner LeAnn Rimes & multi Grammy-nominated recording artist Jon Batiste. All that and more in this week’s New Music Friday for December 18, 2020!

“Find My Way” by Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney is back with the release of his 18th solo studio album, McCartney III. It follows his previous eponymous albums, McCartney and McCartney II released back in 1970 and 1980 respectively. It’s now officially a trilogy set if you think about it.

Once again, the legendary singer-songwriter/producer created this entire album by himself. The only difference this time is that this was made during the quarantine lockdown earlier this year.

It’s cool to see the 78-year-old musician playing all the instruments in the music video seen above. You can tell this was a passion project for him from start to finish. Everything from the vocals to the guitar playing to the drums and even the harpsichord, all of it, it’s a visual and aural delight! It’s a very joyous song that needs to be played for those seeking to relieve the stresses of the week or after a long and hard day’s work.

According to the video’s description the video was directed by Francis Ford Coppola’s son Roman Coppola and “the shoot utilized no less than 46 cameras to capture Paul on every instrument and from every angle, resulting in an unprecedented and intimate glimpse into Paul creating and performing a McCartney III highlight.”

There are 10 additional songs on the new record, so feel free to go check that out this weekend! I enjoyed listening to this experimental album, and I feel Beatles fans and Sir Paul fans alike will do so too!

“Find Me Here” by Hayley Williams

Reflecting on the year that it’s been thus far, we could all use a song like this one from Miss Hayley Williams! This song is part of her latest EP, Petals For Armor: Self Serenades.

It’s soothing to hear this new song where she reminds us all that “long as I’m lovin’ you you’ll never be alone/Long as you keep wanting me around.” It’s true because even though we can’t see all our friends, family members and favorite artists on tour like we use to, the love is still there. The love we have for them will help carry us all through this dark and scary time.

I applaud Williams for putting out one more body of work before the year’s end. It’s like a warm and cozy hug and a very intimate experience for our ears. I’m looking forward to more new music from her in 2021 and from her band Paramore later down the road. How about you?

“Last December” by Good Charlotte

Rock band, Good Charlotte returns to the music scene with a brand new song called “Last December.” It’s been two years since their last release, Generation Rx (2018). A bittersweet music video accompanies the song which deals with the craziness that is 2020 as well as a hint of some hope and joy to carry us into the new year!

Images of closed venues due to the coronavirus lockdown earlier this year are seen. There’s also broken and or boarded up storefronts due to the protests against police brutality and the unjust murder of George Floyd, plus billboards advertising climate change is real and COVID-19 testing sites. It’s very surreal looking back upon those powerful moments. It really seemed like this year would go on and on, seemingly never-ending, but alas we’re in the homestretch part now. Christmas lights are up practically everywhere, and that sliver of normalcy is definitely craved by many. With the vaccines being rolled out across the country as we speak, here’s hoping 2021 will be a better year for everyone. Light is definitely at the end of the tunnel!!

Sonically speaking, this is a very well crafted song from the band whom wanted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album with this release. The lyrics flow seamlessly along the upbeat track. The drumming is simply impeccable.

According to an ALTPRESS interview, lead guitarist Benji Madden said, “The holidays can be a rough time of year. Thinking of the ones we’ve lost and longing for moments that have passed us by is definitely a part of the joy and melancholy.” He added that “for us [it] speaks to both sides of those holiday feelings and we hope it brings some solace to anyone who needs it.”

Overall, it’s great to hear a new GC song before the new year starts. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below.

“Throw My Arms Around The World” by LeAnn Rimes

38-year-old singer-songwriter and 2x Grammy winner, LeAnn Rimes is back with a passionate new song, “Throw My Arms Around The World.” She expressed in a recent tweet that her new single, “is full of passion, hope and sacred rage. I simultaneously dance and cry every time I listen to it. It’s a plea for the world to join me in healing this planet, ourselves and each other.”

Sonically, there’s a lot going on here. It’s such a big production undertaken by a small crew plus Rimes. Props to everyone who worked on this single. Watching the video seen above will make you appreciate the recording process and number of takes it took to put it all together smoothly.

Please put your headphones or earbuds on to get the maximum aural experience! I got a lot of international vibes from this worldwide appealing track such as African and Egyptian sounds. The background vocalists enhances the flow of it all as well. What do you all think? Share your opinions in the comments box down below.

“It’s All Right” by Jon Batiste

The amazing Jon Batiste (3x Grammy-nominated) offers his voice on the upcoming Disney/PIXAR soundtrack, Soul. This track titled, “It’s All Right” is very uplifting and encouraging to listen to. Play this track if you’re feeling sad because it will definitely perk your heart and soul up. Play it also if you want to get an idea of the film’s vibes ahead of time.

The smooth jazzy number is just one of the brilliantly composed tracks off the soundtrack, so you should definitely check out the rest of the album which features tracks from Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as actor Daveed Diggs and neo-soul musician Cody Chesnutt.

Soul will be available to stream on Disney+ on Christmas Day!

New Music Friday: December 11

Greetings! It’s December 11, 2020 which means it’s Friday once again! This week we have an assortment of new songs to check out. There’s all new music from pop stars Taylor Swift, and Gwen Stefani, indie pop band Foster The People, Australian singer-songwriter Cody Simpson & actress and pop recording artist Victoria Justice. All that and more in this week’s post.

“willow” by Taylor Swift

Pop superstar Taylor Swift surprised the Swifties yesterday with the announcement of her ninth studio album, evermore. It will be known as the sister album to the #1 Platinum-selling album, folklore which was released back in July. This time, another 15 new songs (+2 bonus songs on the deluxe edition) are heading your way!

Swift wanted to surprise us with new music since she’s turning 31 in two days. 31 is backwards for 13 which is her favorite lucky number. Whenever something significant comes up numerology speaking, you know she wants to do something special for her fans. She also wanted to provide some additional comfort given the challenging year it’s been thus far. Music is truly the connection we all need during a pandemic!

In “willow,” the first single off the new record, Swift picks off where the “cardigan” music video left off. She re-enters the fantasy world deep inside the piano again, following a shiny sparkly golden string. The National’s Aaron Dessner returned to produce the single as well as helped co-write the song.

Directed by Swift too, the 30-year-old singer revealed that this song, “is about intrigue, desire, and the complexity that goes into wanting someone. I think it sounds like casting a spell to make somebody fall in love with you (an oddly specific visual).”

Dancer Taeok Lee joins the video as Swift’s co-star. “You’ve seen my co-star in this video somewhere before.” Do you guys know? In case you didn’t, he’s one of her tour dancers! Read more about him, here.

Swift also shared that “One scene represents how I feel about fame. There’s a scene to represent each season throughout the journey of the video.” Her imagination and vision in her music videos are truly limitless. 👏👏

Overall, I really enjoy this well thought out music video which was shot safely under COVID-19 protocols, as well as the cool scenery and effects featured all throughout. We really don’t deserve her to be honest! She’s making the Swifties feel warm and toasty this winter, that’s for sure!

She’s such a master at crafting her music from start to finish and it definitely shows again. Expect more awards and accolades in 2021 for this phenomenal piece of art!

Be sure to check out the rest of the album which has collabs from Bon Iver and The National again plus one from the hit sister trio HAIM too! Take a look at her letter on the release of the album here:

“Let Me Reintroduce Myself” by Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani, singer-songwriter and coach on the hit NBC singing competition show, The Voice, is back to her pop roots since four years ago with this new track. Released earlier this week, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” is her way of saying she never really left. This isn’t a comeback! She sings that she’s still the “original old me,” mentioning that she’s not your dusty old records on your shelf while also referencing her famous spelled out lyric, “bananas” from her 2004 smash hit, “Hollaback Girl.” She’s here to provide a little joy in 2020.

The song is really fun and catchy to listen to just like all of her previous hits if I do say so myself. It reminds me a little bit of those No Doubt/Rock Steady days too. Do you agree? The 51-year-old singer debuted the song earlier this week on The Voice. Check out this clip of her performance and her fiancé, Black Shelton praising her new song.

Stefani still has that youthful look to her compared to 20 years ago and fans of hers will definitely dig the new track, the first of many more to come in the new year I hope. “LMRM” will be a part of her fifth solo studio album effort, whenever that comes to fruition.

“Cadillac” by Foster The People

Mark Foster and the guys of Foster The People are back with a six-track EP titled, In The Darkest Of Nights, Let The Birds Sing. All of the songs are worthy of your listen but “Cadillac” in particular is my new current fave. It has a different groove compared to their last promotional single, “Under The Moon.”

It’s safe to say this song is a nod to his newlywed wife and star of Netflix’s Ozark, Julia Garner. “Cadillac” is for all those people out there who have a significant other that they want to drive around with. They’re your soulmate for life and you want them to feel special. Foster sings, “Come with me, my queen/I wanna go with you еverywhere to lift your crown higher/You’ll always be my queen/I wanna go with you everywhere and lift your crown.” Such an empowering and sweet lyric!

Sonically, it’s an uptempo song filled with well executed layers. I especially love how Foster incorporates his vocal range — the low and high ends work well in their respective parts. The outro of the song is nothing I have ever heard from anyone else. Very unique and fresh overall!

Check out the colorful visualizer for some cool driving into the sunset vibes!

Be sure to check out the rest of the new EP which includes their previous releases “Under The Moon,” “The Things We Do,” & “Lamb’s Wool.”

You can pre-order exclusive vinyl version of the EP, here.

“Christmas Dreaming” by Cody Simpson

Get in the Christmas spirit early with Cody Simpson‘s version of Frank Sinatra’s classic 1957 holiday song, “Christmas Dreaming.” This is a lovely track to play by the fireplace with your Christmas tree lit up in the living room.

Simpson’s slow and soft baritone vocals would make the late great Sinatra proud! A very classy track from the 23-year-old Australian singer. He did this song justice in my opinion. I love the single artwork for that old-timey classic look. There’s no need for any crazy embellishments on the song, just an acoustic guitar strumming alongside his voice. It has a modern sound that even Gen-Z listeners will love and enjoy! Do you guys agree?

If you need a new holiday song to put on your playlists this month, feel free to add Simpson’s today!

“Treat Myself” by Victoria Justice

Actress Victoria Justice returns to the music scene. It’s her first new song in seven years and this time Justice is taking the steps in recording her first full length album (tentatively to be released next year).

She posted on her socials the importance of making this song:

This song is for those listeners out there who’ve been harsh critics of themselves. But the catch is, you’re taking the steps at turning over a new leaf. You want to refocus your personal or professional goals in life by letting go of that bad energy you once possessed. Hopefully this song will help you on your personal journey and as we approach the new year with new opportunities, may it help you get some much needed clarity and a boost to your self-esteem.

If you like artists like Julia Michaels or Selena Gomez, you’ll enjoy Justice’s latest tune. I feel like her voice has matured so much since her Victorious days and I’m really looking forward to hearing more songs in the coming months. How about you?

New Music Friday: December 4

We’ve made it to the final month of 2020! Chill out with the following new tunes out this week! Pop boy band Why Don’t We, Grammy-winning artist/producer FINNEAS, EDM hitmakers Cheat Codes ft. Marc E. Bassy, pop duo Aly & AJ & Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna are my recommended picks for you to check out. Read all about them and more in this week’s edition of New Music Friday here at Philip’s Music Corner for December 4, 2020.

“Lotus Inn” by Why Don’t We

Successful quintet boy band, Why Don’t We have released their next single off their forthcoming second studio album, The Good Times and The Bad Ones due in January 2021. It’s called “Lotus Inn,” and I strongly believe this will definitely be their next hit song which follows “Fallin’ (Adrenaline)” released earlier this fall.

From my interpretation, the song talks about catching eyes with somebody attractive and this budding relationship takes off like fireworks exploding in the sky as your newfound love takes your hand so you two can spend the night together at the “lotus inn.” I’ll leave the rest for you own take(s). The seemingly instant love connection that takes place is something to behold. You feel like you’re on cloud nine and want to re-live the heart thumping moment again and again!

Fans of WDW got an early invitational postcard late last month to visit the cozy looking lotus inn (clever marketing, Warner Music Group!). The actual website looks like a legit place to make a reservation too. Click here to see for yourself! It even has the date December 4th (TODAY) on the calendar. It will lead to their merch site if you do click on it, letting fans know that “all of the rooms are booked.” Also, do check out the Lotus Inn IG page for some cool interior shots and much more!

Overall, I believe teens and young adults will adore this upbeat love song from the guys! It will have you dancing along and swaying your hands to the beat of the song. Many will even have tears of joy as well for a multitude reasons like the sheer pride you have in the WDW fandom and the craftmanship the band has taken on in this era.

I can already tell this track will be a fan favorite when the band resumes touring duties in 2021 and it will sound amazing in an arena like setting.

“Another Year” by FINNEAS

FINNEAS offers his holiday song to the world and it doesn’t disappoint! This piano ballad/love song was beautifully written and produced. He talks about not needing Baby Jesus to save him, or a New Year’s resolution to change him. He doesn’t even need presents! The most important thing is spending time with your loved ones or your one true love this holiday season and beyond!

This is a song you need to have on your playlist if you just need something playing while reading a book in the living room with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa. This song has the power that matches a much needed big hug or like a well-deserved massage. It will provide a lot of comforting feelings as we close out what’s been an unprecedented 2020.

What’s funny is that the 23-year-old singer-songwriter/producer penned this track last year around this same time. He didn’t knew the lyrics would be so poetic for a crazy time like this. He posted on his Instagram, “I wrote this song this time last year but if I had known what would happen in the following 12 months, I wouldn’t have changed a line. Hope it gives you a little comfort.”

Good thing he didn’t change anything because the verses of this song are absolutely perfect!

So if you’re looking for a new holiday song to add to your collection that’s soothing to the ears, look no further to FINNEAS’ “Another Year.”

“Do It All Over” by Cheat Codes feat. Marc E. Bassy

EDM trio Cheat Codes have teamed up with San Fran native singer-songwriter Marc E. Bassy for an infectious new anthem about wanting to start over again. That’s what most would say when it comes to this year! Am I right?

The conflicting emotions and cycles of love and heartbreak can take a toll on you so this track will be relevant to those listeners out there who want that re-do in life when it comes to your love life. It can also apply to other aspects of life too, like say a job that you lost. You want and plead for that second chance. Perhaps it will end in the same result, but that doesn’t stop you from trying!

Sonically speaking, I love the arrangement of the beats with Bassy’s solid vocal performance. I especially love the added synths. It’s very addictive and definitely deserves to be played over and over again. This is an A+ collaboration!

This song will be a part of Cheat Codes’ upcoming debut studio album, Hellraisers due to be released next year. Expect more amazing collaborations and teaser songs to be dropped before then.

“Slow Dancing” by Aly & AJ

Vibe out with Aly & AJ’s latest single, “Slow Dancing.” This is such a mellow track that will leave you feeling refreshed after listening to it. The sister duo crafted a lovely soft pop song. Clear skin is just a click away!

Lyrically, it talks about missing someone you know and love because they’re living far away from you due to various reasons (e.g a long distance relationship, COVID-19 distancing from a family member/relative/friend, or your lover is on a long business trip).

The ladies indirectly mention quarantine life of 2020 and the political divisions in the U.S. we’re currently experiencing in the lines, “Hell’s bending, keeping me captive,” and “I’ve got my reasons to complain/And they’re tangled in red, white, and blue/The battlе outside is blazing/And all I’m thinking about is you” respectively.

In my opinion, this song is like Fleetwood Mac mixed in with the current sound of Vanessa Carlton alongside with some HAIM essence too. What do you guys think?

I feel like this song can literally be used in teen dramas with a literal “slow dancing” scene or a school prom scene for a high-school based series.

If you need to feel the feels or de-stress your troubles away, then this is your pick of the week! This song is slated to be a part of their fourth studio album. A release date has yet to be announced. I’m stoked to hear more from them in the near future!

“Dance Like Nobody’s Watching” by Yuna

Capping off this week’s picks is Yuna’s groovy new song called, “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching.” Forget sadness and heartbreak because music is the remedy for all of that. Literally, Yuna wants you to immerse yourself with your favorite song(s) including this one. Life is short too be upset about lost love.

Dance the night away as the 34-year-old singer-songwriter belts out gracefully these notable lines from the lyrics, “Dance like nobody’s watching (Oh, oh, oh)/’Cause you won’t be the one to save me (Yeah, yeah)” and in the post-chorus, “Gonna take my shoes off and be free (Ooh)/No one to tell me how to feel (Ooh)/I got a solution baby (Ooh). Dance like nobody’s watching.”

This song exudes confidence in moving on and being a strong independent person overall. This is a great track for future club playlists but for now it will have to settle for those “party for one in my own house/apartment” kind of playlists.

Sonically speaking, Yuna’s vocals are delicate like a dove’s feather. Very calming to the ears, breathy, and matches well with the tempo of the song. It’s not too slow nor too fast. Just right!
