For this edition of New Music Friday for Friday, May 21, 2021, I’m going to do something a little bit different. This will be a mood edition meaning I’ll list the songs per usual but instead of my normal wordy posts, I will be explaining how I felt by the songs using emojis.
Scroll on down to see which new songs made the cut!

“Violet!” by Waterparks
Moods:
😲 and 😡 because I can’t believe a Parxie would go to that extreme in stalking lead singer, Awsten Knight. That level of stanning is simply uncalled for!
😁 for the cool melody. A clean track too, people who don’t like or use swear words will enjoy this one! Love the upbeat vibes in terms of sound.
😎 for the song’s title being a Pixar reference: see The Incredibles‘ character Violet Parr. See this confirmation tweet here by Knight.
👏🏽👏🏽 representing my appreciation of Awsten’s producers skills on this track! He really went above and beyond on “Violet!” as well as the other 16 unique tracks seen on Greatest Hits. My other current favorite track is “The Secret Life Of Me.”
“1 step forward, 3 steps back” by Olivia Rodrigo
Moods:
😩 because the lyrics really drive out the frustration one might experience when dating someone. For every move forward, you drop back 3 steps down the proverbial ladder. No progress in the relationship, just a spiraling down in the wrong direction. This notion can apply to dead end career choices or setbacks in any of life’s paths. For example, you pass a course but fail the next level of your curriculum.
❤️ that Olivia interpolated Taylor Swift’s “New Year’s Day” into the song. Swift and fellow pop singer-songwriter, Jack Antonoff share writing credits on the song by the way! I hope to see a full on collaboration one day!
ICYMI: Her SNL performances: “driver’s license” and “good 4 u.”
“Butter” by BTS
Moods:
🧈 because this new BTS track is really smooth like butter (pun intended!)
🕺 because this song will make listeners dance and get up on their feet.
🌞 because the arrangement of the song will make you think its summer anytime of the year! The warm infectious chorus will make you feel good!
🌟 their presence on US radio waves will likely beat the exposure of their previous English-only single, “Dynamite.” I predict major TV airtime, star power partnerships, sponsorships, and promotions lie ahead for them!
“Leave Before You Love Me” by Marshmello x Jonas Brothers
Moods:
💔 because the lyrics depict heartbreak. I feel for those who are crushed by a once thriving relationship that’s now turned sour.
😔 because it makes you contemplate what went wrong in a relationship.
🔥 because this collaboration matches well! Marshmello’s signature style and the Jonas Brothers’ heartfelt vocals provide for an epic pairing in my eyes.
“Body Language” by Blake Shelton feat. The Swon Brothers
Moods:
👐 representing the shared sentiments between two people. You feel for and understand somebody else’s frustrations and or feeling towards a situation or another person, place or event. You’re open to hearing them out and listening to their overall concerns.
💞 to represent the loving vibes two people share with one another no matter what the situation is. From a committed relationship POV, it stands for that inner instinct where you know what he’s/she’s/they’re saying even in moments when he/she/they don’t explicitly tell it out loud.
“Saturday” by Twenty One Pilots
Moods:
😃 because this is a rather catchy and peppy track coming from the band that’s usually not in the dance pop realm. A welcome change in sound thanks in part due to them teaming up with famed producer, Greg Kurstin (see Adele, Beck, Sia & Kelly Clarkson).
🤗 because you have to thank your significant other and family for keeping your life in check and in balance especially during this pandemic.
🔊 because this song deserves to be blasted! (within reasonable consideration to your neighbors of course!)
“Our Song” by Anne-Marie & Niall Horan
Moods:
😎 because this is a cool collaboration between the two. Their energies were infectious in this video. Cute concept for the M/V by the way!
📻 representing all the breakups out there in which a song is attached to a relationship. No matter what song you shared between someone before heartbreak, it will forever be etched in your memory!
🚗 because it makes you want to play this song with the car windows wide open! I love the chorus of the song. Anne-Marie’s and Niall’s vocals seamlessly intertwine with one another.
“Never Forget You (Orchestral Version)” by Zara Larsson
Moods:
💯 this orchestral version hits deep!! I really love this version because it showcases an amazing orchestra alongside Zara’s amazing powerful vocals! Music to my ears!!
🎞️ because I feel they could use parts of this version of the song in a movie scene or movie trailer! Cinematic perfection!
“I Wanna Remember” by NEEDTOBREATHE feat. Carrie Underwood
Moods:
🙌 because this is such a feel good track. You want to make a lot of memories with your significant other or family members. It motivates you to do fun things together or to attend some amazing events (i.e. a concert) so that those moments will never leave your mind/memory! If the two artists sing this live one day, fans will be swaying their hands!
😊 because the collaboration works! Lead singer Bear Rinehart helped her album, My Savior by offering background vocals on track #2, “Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus.” And now she lends her voice on their new album, Into The Mystery with this track!
“Magazines” by Anson Seabra
Moods:
🥺 because awww, you can’t help but feel sympathy towards people who aren’t the same people deep down inside compared to what the public eye thinks of them. Case example, this reminds me of Paris Hilton. Deep down she’s smart and business savvy yet mainstream media still treats her like she’s the ditzy blonde who just wants to party 24/7.
🧠 to represent Anson’s creative artistry in writing these heartfelt lyrics. Once again, another home run out of the ballpark for him!
That does it for this week’s post! Thanks for indulging with me and checking out this week’s picks. Feel free to share with me your moods and thoughts about the new music offerings in the comments below.
